Chapter 26: The Morning After

The morning sunlight streamed through Eva's bedroom window in golden ribbons, casting warmth across the tangle of sheets and skin. For the first time in weeks—maybe longer—Eva woke up not to the sound of an alarm or the pressure of a deadline, but to the quiet, rhythmic breathing of someone beside her.

Noah.

His arm was draped loosely around her waist, his bare chest rising and falling with the kind of ease that had eluded them both for far too long. Eva shifted gently, propping herself up on one elbow, watching the way the early light softened the hard edges of his face. He looked younger like this. Or maybe just unguarded.

She let her fingers brush his shoulder, the curve of his neck. Still there. Still real.

Last night hadn’t been about fixing everything. It had been about choosing to stop running. And now, with the morning humming around them, Eva felt the weight of that choice settle deeper.

Noah stirred beneath her touch, blinking slowly before his eyes landed on hers. His mouth curled into a sleepy, crooked smile.

"Hey," he said, voice husky.

"Hey."

They stayed like that for a beat too long. Long enough for everything unsaid to crowd the space again.

He reached for her hand, threading their fingers together. "I meant every word. Last night wasn’t just..."

"I know," she said softly. "Me too."

They lay in silence a moment longer before Eva sighed and glanced at the clock on her nightstand. "I should get up."

"Right. Work."

"And... life," she added, making a face. "The board."

He sat up beside her, scrubbing a hand through his hair. "You haven’t heard anything yet?"

"Not a word. But no news could mean they’re still deciding."

"Or waiting to see if you break."

She looked at him then, the vulnerability surfacing. "What if I already have?"

He reached out and cupped her cheek. "You haven’t. You’re still standing. That’s more than most."

She leaned into his hand briefly before pulling away with a sigh. "I should go meet Claire. She said she’d keep an ear to the ground."

Noah nodded. "I’ll stay out of sight. Unless you want me there."

She smiled faintly. "Not yet. But soon. Maybe."

Later That Morning — Hotel Lounge

Claire was already at their usual table by the window when Eva arrived, her laptop open, a half-drunk coffee beside it. Her blazer was crisp, her lipstick bold. She looked like a woman ready for war.

"You’re late," Claire said without looking up.

"Good morning to you too," Eva replied, sliding into the seat across from her.

Claire finally looked up. "You look... different. Soft. Did you sleep?"

Eva hesitated. "Yeah. I did."

Claire arched a brow. "Alone?"

Eva just smirked into her coffee.

"Well, I’ll be damned," Claire said. "Was it good at least?"

"Claire."

"What? I’m invested."

Eva chuckled, shaking her head. "It wasn’t about that. It was... something else. Something real."

Claire nodded, her expression sobering. "Then I’m glad. Because you’ll need that anchor when this next part hits."

Eva stiffened. "What part?"

Claire turned her laptop slightly so Eva could see the email open on the screen. "They’ve called a final review session. Tomorrow morning. You’re not technically required to attend, but if you want your name on the door when this project launches, you’ll be there."

Eva’s stomach tightened. "And if I don’t go?"

"Then they’ll quietly push you out. Bring in someone safe. Someone who won’t make waves."

"I’ve given everything to this project," Eva said, voice low. "They know that."

"Doesn’t matter. This is politics now. Optics. They need to see you fight."

Eva nodded slowly, setting her jaw. "Then I’ll fight."

Claire leaned back in her chair, giving Eva a long, appraising look. "Good. Because the Eva I know doesn’t go down easy. You built this project from nothing. You inspired loyalty, vision, and every ounce of drive that made this hotel something new. If they want to erase you from it, they’ll have to do it with you standing right in front of them."

Eva felt a rush of heat beneath her skin. Not from anger, but from purpose.

She hadn’t come this far to fade into the background.

"What do you need from me?" Claire asked.

"Help me prep," Eva said, resolute now. "Everything. The data, the vision documents, the internal support I’ve built. I want it all airtight. I want them to see that they’re not just cutting me—they’re cutting the soul out of this place."

Claire grinned. "Now that’s the Eva I know."

That Evening — Eva's Apartment

By the time Eva returned home, her mind was a whirl of presentation slides and strategy outlines. The pressure sat heavy in her chest, but underneath it was something steadier now. Resolve.

Noah was sitting on the couch, flipping through a book he probably hadn’t read a word of. When he saw her, he stood.

"How did it go?"

She dropped her bag and walked into his arms. "They scheduled the final review. Tomorrow. I’m going in."

He held her tightly. "You’ve got this."

She nodded against his chest. "I’m scared. But I’m not backing down."

Noah pressed a kiss to her forehead. "I’ll be here. Whatever happens."
