Chapter 49 Chapter 49
I didn’t realize my hands were shaking until the car door closed behind us.
The gala faded into the distance as Adrian’s driver pulled smoothly onto the road. The city lights streaked past the window, but my mind was still trapped in that ballroom—in Daniel’s stunned expression, Mandy’s tight smile, the way Adrian’s arm had felt solid and steady beneath my fingers.
“You did well,” Adrian said quietly beside me.
I let out a breath that felt like I’d been holding it all night. “I don’t feel like I did.”
“That’s usually how it is when you’re brave.”
I turned to look at him. He was relaxed, jacket open, one hand resting against his knee—but his jaw was tight, like he was thinking several moves ahead. Or maybe fighting something.
“You planned that,” I said.
“Yes.”
“You wanted him to see me with you.”
“Yes.”
“And you wanted me to say it out loud,” I added. “That we’re together.”
His eyes flicked to mine. “I wanted him to hear it from you.”
Silence settled between us, not awkward—heavy.
“What happens now?” I asked.
“Now,” he said slowly, “Daniel starts paying attention again. To you. To me. To every move we make.”
“That’s dangerous.”
A corner of his mouth lifted. “Only for him.”
I should have felt satisfied. Victorious. Instead, my chest felt tight, like I’d stepped into something that couldn’t be undone.
The car stopped in front of the penthouse.
Inside, the quiet wrapped around us. No cameras. No whispers. Just space and the low hum of the city beyond the glass walls.
I slipped out of my heels, my feet aching. “I forgot how exhausting pretending can be.”
Adrian loosened his tie. “You weren’t pretending tonight.”
I looked up. “Yes, I was.”
“No,” he said gently. “You were reclaiming something.”
I crossed my arms, suddenly unsure of what to do with myself. “Daniel looked at me like he didn’t recognize me.”
“That’s because he doesn’t,” Adrian replied. “The woman he controlled is gone.”
“And the one standing now?” I asked.
He met my gaze. “She hasn’t decided who she is yet.”
His honesty startled me.
I moved toward the window, staring out at the city. “Sometimes I’m afraid I’m becoming someone I won’t recognize either.”
Adrian joined me, close enough that I could feel his warmth—but he didn’t touch me.
“That fear,” he said, “means you still have a compass.”
I swallowed. “And what about you, Adrian? Where does this leave you?”
He was quiet for a long moment.
“Dangerously invested,” he said at last.
My heart skipped. “That doesn’t sound like something you’d allow.”
“I didn’t,” he admitted. “And yet—here we are.”
I turned fully toward him. “We agreed to rules.”
“Yes.”
“No emotions.”
“Yes.”
“No intimacy.”
“Yes.”
“Then why does it feel like we’re circling something we’re not supposed to touch?”
His gaze dropped to my lips for half a second—then back to my eyes.
“Because,” he said, voice low, “some things don’t ask for permission.”
The air shifted.
I should have stepped back.
I didn’t.
“Adrian,” I whispered, “if we cross that line—”
He lifted a hand, stopping himself inches from my face. His restraint was almost painful to watch.
“I won’t touch you,” he said. “Not unless you’re certain. Not unless this is something you choose—not something born out of anger or loneliness.”
My throat tightened. No one had ever given me that kind of power before.
“I don’t know what I feel,” I admitted.
“That’s okay,” he said. “I do.”
I searched his face. “And what do you feel?”
His answer was quiet. Honest. Dangerous.
“Protective. Drawn. And far more human than I intended to be.”
Something inside me softened—and cracked.
Before I could stop myself, I rested my forehead briefly against his chest. Just for a second. Just to breathe.
He stiffened—but then relaxed, his hand hovering near my back without touching.
We stayed like that, suspended in a moment that felt too intimate to be called innocent, and too restrained to be called anything else.
Eventually, I stepped back.
“We should stop,” I said, even though my body protested.
“Yes,” he agreed. “We should.”
Neither of us moved.
Finally, he cleared his throat. “I’ll have the guest room prepared for you tonight.”
I nodded. “Thank you.”
As I walked away, my heart racing, I knew one thing with terrifying clarity—
Facing Daniel again would be easy.
Resisting Adrian?
That was going to cost me everything.
