Valentin's Attack

The baby screamed as reality shook around them. Max lunged forward, putting himself between Valentin and his family.

"Get back!" Max yelled, pushing Rory and the baby toward Tobias. "Henri, the safe room! Now!"

Valentin's laugh echoed through the falling room. His body flashed between solid and digital, leaving trails of code in the air. "Always the hero, Max. But you can't save them this time."

Max grabbed a broken chair and swung it at Valentin, but it passed right through him. Valentin became solid just long enough to land a punch that sent Max crashing into the wall.

"Max!" Rory screamed, holding their baby tighter as the child's eyes flashed with golden light.

Tobias pulled them toward the exit. "We need to move! He's not alone!"

He was right. The windows broke as three more figures climbed through – people with bodies that flickered like Valentin's, but something was wrong with them. Their faces looked unfinished, with traits that shifted and changed.

"My children," Valentin said happily, waving his hand toward them. "Made, not born. Digital Ascendance has created what nature couldn't – artificial quantum stabilizers."

Max stumbled to his feet, blood trickling from his forehead. "That's impossible."

"Nothing is impossible in the digital realm," Valentin replied. "Your son may be special, but he's not the only bridge between worlds anymore."

One of the mechanical beings reached toward Henri. Where their hands touched, Henri's arm began to glitch, turning transparent then solid again. He screamed in pain.

"Run!" Max yelled, grabbing a falling pipe and swinging it through the creature. Unlike with Valentin, this time the weapon hit, sending the being staggering backward in a shower of digital sparks.

Rory raced toward the back hallway with the baby, Tobias covering their escape. The building shook fiercely, chunks of ceiling raining down.

"They're targeting the building's stability points," Tobias shouted, tapping the device behind his ear. "I'm calling for backup!"

Max fought his way to Rory's side. "The safe room won't hold against these things. We need to get to the vehicle bay."

A digital creature emerged in front of Rory, its half-formed face twisting into something like a smile. The baby wailed louder, his cries somehow making the creature flicker more strongly.

"He affects them," Rory gasped, moving forward instead of back. "Max, look!"

The baby's eyes glowed brighter, and the digital being shuddered, its form becoming less solid. Rory felt something strange – a tingling in her arms as she held her son, like electricity running through her blood.

"He's sharing his power with me," she whispered in wonder.

Without thinking, Rory reached out toward the thing. Where her fingers touched its digital form, it began to dissolve, breaking apart into pieces of code that fell to the floor like glowing sand.

"How did you—" Max started, but there was no time.

Valentin had noticed what happened. His eyes locked on Rory and the baby, his face twisted with rage. "Take the child!" he ordered the remaining creatures.

They moved in perfect sync, surrounding the group. Henri had made it to a control panel on the wall and was furiously typing a code.

"The garage door is opening," he called. "Thirty seconds!"

Tobias pulled something from his pocket – a small silver device that released a high-pitched whine. The digital creatures recoiled, their bodies becoming unstable.

"Quantum disruptor," he explained, grimacing as he held it up. "Won't hold them long!"

Max grabbed Rory's hand. "This way!"

They raced down the stairs, the walls around them starting to flicker in and out of reality. The baby's cries grew louder, more frightened. With each wail, the building seemed to stabilize briefly, only to start dissolving again when he stopped for breath.

"He's fighting the breakdown," Tobias said in wonder as they ran. "A child this young shouldn't be able to control his abilities like that."

They burst into the garage just as one wall disappeared completely, showing the Rome skyline – but it wasn't right. The city was overlaid with digital structures, towers of code rising between old buildings. The sky itself seemed torn, showing views of another world beyond.

"What's happening to the city?" Rory gasped.

"Digital Ascendance is accelerating the merger between worlds," Tobias replied grimly. "They're forcing transcendence."

A black van waited with its engine going. Henri jumped into the driver's seat while Max helped Rory and the baby inside. Tobias was the last to reach the car, but as he ran, Valentin materialized in front of him.

"Traitor," Valentin hissed, his hand diving into Tobias's chest.

Tobias screamed, his body convulsing as digital code spread from Valentin's hand through his blood like poison.

"No!" Max yelled, leaping from the van.

But it was too late. Tobias fell, his body half-transformed into lines of flickering code. Valentin stepped over him, moving toward the van.

"Max, get in!" Henri yelled, starting the engine.

Max paused for just a moment, looking at Tobias's fallen form, before diving back into the van. Henri floored the gas, crashing through the garage door.

As they sped away, Rory looked back to see Valentin standing in the road, watching them go. He wasn't chasing them. He was happy.

"Why isn't he following?" she asked, her voice shaking.

The baby suddenly went quiet in her arms. His eyes, which had been glowing gold, turned totally black. When he opened his mouth, the chorus of voices returned – Elijah, Camille, Daniel, and others speaking as one.

"He doesn't need to follow," the voices said through the baby. "The artificial stabilizers have already locked onto this vessel. They can track him anywhere."

Max looked at his son in horror. "How do we stop them?"

The baby's head turned, looking straight at Rory. "Mother must awaken. The gift has passed to her. She can disrupt their signal."

Rory felt the strange tingling again, stronger now. "What gift? I don't understand!"

"The Harmony chose you both," the voices continued. "Father protects, mother disrupts. Together, bridge worlds."

Before anyone could ask more questions, the baby's eyes returned to normal. He began to cry – an ordinary, scared sound.

Henri swerved the van around a turn, checking the mirrors. "I think we lost them for now, but where do we go? The Antarctica coordinates?"

Max nodded grimly. "We need to get to the origin point. But first, we need somewhere safe to regroup and figure out what's happening to Rory."

As if answering his question, the van's guidance system suddenly came to life on its own. A map appeared, showing a place just outside the city.

"I didn't do that," Henri said nervously.

"It's Elijah," Max realized. "He's helping us from inside the network."

The van shuddered suddenly, the metal of the roof denting inward as something heavy landed on top. Clawed fingers, made of changing digital code, began to tear through the metal.

Rory clutched the baby tight, feeling the strange power building inside her again. "What do I do?" she cried. "How do I use this?"

Max grabbed her hand, his eyes determined. "Together, remember? That's what they said."

As his fingers intertwined with hers, the tingling feeling exploded through Rory's body. Her vision blurred, and suddenly she could see the digital thing above them – not just its physical form, but the code that made it real.

And she knew exactly how to unravel it.
