The Brotherhood's Purge
The window burst inward, showering Max with glass. He dove to the floor as black-suited figures swarmed into the emergency center they'd set up.
"Quantum Brotherhood!" someone screamed.
Max rolled behind a desk as energy blasts hit the wall behind him. He'd heard about the Brotherhood on the news – a group that thought only the "worthy" should have quantum powers. Now they were here, attacking people who just wanted help.
"Find the unworthy!" shouted a guy in a white coat. "Cleanse them!"
Max's heart beat. These weren't just attacks – they were killers. He needed to reach Rory and the baby, who were in the back room helping newly enhanced people learn to control their powers.
A woman nearby cried out as a Brotherhood member grabbed her arm. "Please, I didn't ask for these powers! I just want to go home to my kids!"
"Too late," the attacker said coldly. "The weak must be purged."
Max couldn't wait any longer. He grabbed a fallen chair and threw it at the attacker, hitting him directly in the head. The woman broke free and ran.
"Get to the back exit!" Max screamed to everyone. "Now!"
People rushed toward safety as Max fought his way toward the back room. When he finally reached it, the door was locked.
"Rory!" he pounded on the door. "It's me!"
The door opened just enough for him to slip inside. Rory stood there, the baby in one arm and a homemade weapon in her other hand. Around twenty scared people huddled in the room.
"The Brotherhood?" Rory asked, her face pale.
Max nodded grimly. "They're 'cleansing' anyone they think is too weak to have powers."
The baby's field pulsed with anger. BAD PEOPLE. HURTING OTHERS.
"We need to get these people out," Max said, looking at the scared faces around them. "Is there another way?"
Rory pointed to a service door. "It leads to the alley. But Max, we can't just run. They'll keep hunting."
Max knew she was right. The Brotherhood wouldn't stop. "Get everyone to safety. I'll hold them off."
"You can't fight them alone!" Rory argued.
"I won't be fighting," Max answered, thinking quickly. "I'll be talking."
Before Rory could argue, the main door started to shake as someone tried to break it down.
"Go!" Max pushed. "Now!"
Rory paused, then gave him a fierce kiss. "Don't die," she ordered.
"Wouldn't dream of it," he promised.
As Rory led the others toward the back exit, Max took a deep breath and opened the main door. On the other side stood five Brotherhood members, led by the guy in the white coat.
Max raised his hands. "I want to speak to your leader."
The white-coated man stepped forward with a cold smile. "You're speaking to him."
Max's blood turned to ice as recognition hit him. "Dr. Mercer?"
"Maximilian Rykard," Mercer answered. "It's been, what, five years since you fired me?"
"You were experimenting on people without their permission," Max said, memories flooding back. "People died."
Mercer shrugged. "Sacrifices for progress. Something you never understood."
The Brotherhood members spread out, guns ready. Max kept his hands up, playing for time.
"So this is your revenge?" Max asked. "Killing innocent people because they got powers they didn't ask for?"
"Not revenge," Mercer amended. "Evolution. Only the strongest should survive this quantum leap. The weak will only hold humanity back."
"That's not how evolution works," Max countered. "And it's not your choice to make."
Mercer laughed. "It is now. The enhancement wave gave us the perfect opportunity. We identify the unworthy and remove them before they dilute the gene pool."
Max fought to keep his face calm, but inside he was boiling with anger. How many people had Mercer already killed? How many homes destroyed?
"What makes someone worthy in your eyes?" Max asked, taking a small step forward.
"Control. Potential. Strength of will," Mercer noted. "Those who can't master their abilities within hours are clearly defective."
"Hours?" Max couldn't believe what he was hearing. "These people haven't even had a full day!"
"Time enough," Mercer said dismissively. "My team mastered our abilities almost instantly."
Max squinted at him. "Your team? You're enhanced too?"
Mercer's smile widened. "We were the first test subjects for the Liberation Front's technology. Three months of preparation before they launched the global wave."
A piece clicked into place in Max's mind. "You're not fighting against the Liberation Front. You're working with them."
"Let's say we have an arrangement," Mercer responded. "They create the enhanced. We remove the failures."
Max took another careful step forward. "And what about children? Do you 'remove' them too if they can't control their powers fast enough?"
Something flashed across Mercer's face. "Children adapt quicker than adults."
"But not all of them," Max pushed. "What about the ones who struggle?"
Before Mercer could answer, a Brotherhood member burst in from outside.
"Sir! We found a group escaping through the back! One of them has a baby with a blue field!"
Mercer's eyes lit up. "The quantum child. Bring it to me!"
"No!" Max lunged forward, but two Brotherhood members caught him.
Mercer leaned in close. "I've heard about that baby. A natural quantum being. Imagine what I could learn from studying it."
The thought of Mercer getting his hands on Rory's baby made Max sick. He struggled against the men holding him, but their increased strength was too much.
"They won't get far," Mercer said firmly. "My people have the building surrounded."
Max's mind raced. He needed to warn Rory, but how? Then he remembered – the baby could sense danger. If Max could just cause enough of a quantum disturbance...
He stopped fighting and went completely still, focusing his mind like Henri had taught him. Quantum particles reacted to observation – to consciousness. Max pictured the baby, pictured his warning: Trap! Run!
Mercer looked at him curiously. "Given up already? I expected more fight from a Rykard."
"Just getting started," Max responded. Then he stomped his foot hard on the stabilizer control hidden under the carpet.
The building's quantum stabilizer shut down quickly. Without its dampening effect, everyone's powers increased. Brotherhood members floated off the ground or sparked with energy, temporarily losing control.
Max broke free and ran for the back exit. Behind him, Mercer shouted directions, trying to regain control of his team.
Outside in the alley, Max looked anxiously in both directions. No sign of Rory or the others. Good – they must have gotten away.
His relief was short-lived. A blast of energy hit the wall beside him, sending rocks flying. Max ducked and ran as more blasts followed.
"You can't escape, Rykard!" Mercer's voice called out. "We have people all over the city!"
Max kept running, zigzagging through alleyways and side streets. He needed to find Rory, needed to make sure she and the baby were safe.
His phone buzzed with a text message: "Safe house 3. Hurry."
Max changed direction, heading for the abandoned factory they'd set up as a backup site. If he could just get there without being followed...
A small drone zipped by overhead, its camera turning to focus on him. Max swore and knocked it down with a piece of pipe, but it was too late. They'd spotted him.
He ran faster, lungs burning. The safe house was just a few blocks away.
When he finally reached the plant, he slipped inside through a side door and called out softly, "Rory?"
"Here," her voice came from the darkness. She stepped forward, the baby held tight against her chest. "Are you okay?"
"Been better," Max admitted, checking to make sure he wasn't followed. "Mercer is leading the Brotherhood."
"Mercer?" Rory's eyes widened. "The doctor you fired?"
Max nodded grimly. "The same. And he wants the baby."
The baby's field pulsed with worry. DANGEROUS MAN. WANTS TO CUT ME OPEN.
Rory's face hardened. "That's not going to happen."
"Where are the others?" Max asked, looking around the empty room.
"Sofia took them to another location," Rory stated. "I stayed behind to wait for you."
Max checked his watch. "We have less than 60 hours before Valentin's deadline. We need to get to your parents."
A soft noise made them both freeze. Someone was outside.
"Back door," Max whispered. "Now."
They crept toward the back of the factory. Just as they reached the door, it burst open. Brotherhood members poured in, guns ready.
"Run!" Max yelled, grabbing a metal bar to defend them.
Rory raced away with the baby as Max swung the bar, knocking down the first attacker.
"Max!" Rory screamed as more Brotherhood members appeared in front of her.
They were trapped.
Mercer walked in quietly, clapping his hands. "Impressive escape attempt. But futile."
"What do you want?" Max asked, moving to stand beside Rory.
"First, the child," Mercer said. "Then, your new stabilizer technology."
"Never," Rory clutched the baby tighter.
Mercer sighed. "I was hoping you'd be reasonable." He nodded to his team. "Take the baby. Kill the parents."
The Brotherhood closed in. Max and Rory backed against a wall, no escape in sight.
Then the baby's field suddenly expanded, making a perfect blue sphere around them. Brotherhood members bounced off it, unable to break through.
"Fascinating," Mercer noted, touching the field cautiously. "Such power in such a small package."
The baby's eyes glowed bright blue as his field pulsed with increased speed.
"What's happening?" Rory asked, looking down at her child.
The baby's field started to show images – hundreds of people around the city being attacked by the Brotherhood. Families torn apart. Children taken.
"He's showing us what's happening," Max realized in fear. "The Brotherhood isn't just attacking here. It's everywhere."
The images changed to show Henri and Camille at the university, surrounded by Brotherhood members. Then Sofia and Iris, hiding in a closet as attackers searched the hospital.
"We need to help them," Rory said desperately.
"But how?" Max asked. "We're trapped here."
The baby's field pulsed once more, showing a new picture – the quantum stabilizers across the city, all connecting in a network. In the middle was a bright light.
SACRIFICE NEEDED, the baby's thoughts repeated. ONE FOR MANY.
"No," Rory whispered, understanding coming on her face. "There has to be another way."
The baby looked up at her with old, knowing eyes. Then he reached out and touched Max's heart.
Max gasped as information flooded his mind – how to create a quantum pulse that would disable all enhanced powers temporarily. A reset button for the entire city.
"I can stop them," Max said slowly, the knowledge heavy in his chest. "But Rory, the cost is..."
The baby's field showed the final piece – Max, standing at the center of the network, directing the pulse through his own body.
"No!" Rory grabbed his arm. "You'll die!"
Mercer pounded on the blue field, his face twisted with rage. "Whatever you're planning, it won't work! The Brotherhood cannot be stopped!"
Max looked at Rory, memorizing every feature of her face. "I have to try."
"Max, please," tears streamed down Rory's face. "We'll find another way."
Outside the bubble, Mercer brought up a big cannon-like device. "Enough games! Break through that field now!"
Max touched Rory's face softly. "Take care of our son."
Before she could stop him, Max put his hand on the baby's field and closed his eyes.
The blue bubble burst outward in a massive wave of energy, knocking everyone to the ground. When Rory opened her eyes, Max was gone.
And so was the baby.
