Chapter 64: Digital Bargain

The mountain burst.

Not with fire and smoke, but with digital light—millions of tiny blue pixels that burst through the rock and formed a perfect sphere around the Natural Path refuge. Inside, everyone ducked for cover.

"What's happening?" Rory shouted, sheltering the baby with her body.

"Digital Ascendance," Elara spat the words like they tasted bad. "They've found us."

The pixel sphere pulsed once, twice—then transformed into a swarm of glowing butterflies that gathered at the middle of the sanctuary. The butterflies spun faster and faster until they made the shape of a woman. She was tall and thin with silver hair cut short, and her skin had a bluish tint that seemed to flicker with code.

"Greetings, factions," the woman said. Her voice sounded partly human, partly like a robot. "I am Director Zanna of Digital Ascendance."

Max stepped forward, putting himself between the digital woman and Rory. "How did you find this place?"

"Please," Zanna smiled. "We've been monitoring quantum disturbances across Los Angeles for decades. When three major factions converged in one location—well, it wasn't difficult to track you."

The baby's field reached out, touching the digital projection carefully. NOT REALLY HERE. ELSEWHERE SAFE.

Zanna turned to the baby, her eyes widening slightly. "The First One speaks already. Fascinating. His development is accelerated beyond our models."

"What do you want?" Camille asked. "If you've come for the baby—"

"If we wanted to take the child, we would have sent soldiers, not a message," Zanna interrupted. "I'm here to offer an alliance."

Sera of the Natural Path crossed her arms. "Digital Ascendance doesn't make alliances. You consume and assimilate."

"Normally, yes," Zanna nodded. "But these are hardly normal times."

She waved her hand, and the butterflies scattered, making screens that showed images of Los Angeles. The void tear had grown, now covering most of the sky above the city. Fractures spread through buildings, streets, and even people—freezing them in twisted shapes.

"The void entities are overwhelming us," Zanna continued. "Even our most advanced quantum processors can't predict their movements. But together, we might have a chance."

"And what exactly are you offering?" Max asked.

"Computing power," Zanna answered. "More than all three of your factions combined. We can analyze quantum patterns, predict fracture points, and coordinate defense efforts across the city."

"In exchange for what?" Rory asked, holding her baby closer.

Zanna's eyes fixed on the child. "Data. Regular scans of the First One's quantum development. Nothing invasive—just observations."

"Absolutely not," Rory said instantly. "My baby isn't a lab experiment."

"I understand your protectiveness," Zanna said easily. "But consider the alternative. Without coordination, Los Angeles falls within hours. The void spreads across California by tomorrow. The entire continent within a week."

Max turned to Rory and Camille. "She's right about one thing—we need coordination."

"We can't trust them," Rory maintained. "Digital Ascendance has been trying to control quantum evolution for profit since before I was born."

The baby's field pulsed carefully. NOT ALL BAD. NOT ALL GOOD. LIKE OTHERS.

Max nodded slowly. "What if we agree to limited data sharing? Anonymous readings only, no direct access to the baby."

"Max!" Rory hissed. "We haven't agreed to anything!"

"We're running out of time and options," Max replied tensely.

Camille stepped between them. "Perhaps we should discuss this privately."

"There's no time for that," Zanna cut in. "The void entities are organizing a major assault. My sensors detect them converging on the Hollywood sign—where your friend Elijah is using the stolen stabilizer."

Everyone froze.

"What is he doing with it?" Sofia asked.

"Reconfiguring it," Zanna explained. "The Liberation Front believes they can use it to accelerate quantum evolution—give everyone powers like Rory's."

"That's insane," Tau from the Natural Path said. "It would create a cascade effect, fracturing reality beyond repair."

Zanna nodded. "Which is why we need to stop them—together."

Max looked at Rory, his eyes begging. "We need their computing power."

"And I need to protect my child," Rory replied.

Zanna watched their fight with calculating eyes. Then she said something that stopped everyone cold: "The Rykard and Dumont families have always been stubborn—across every generation."

The sanctuary went quiet.

"What did you say?" Camille asked slowly.

"Digital Ascendance has monitored both families for generations," Zanna stated. "Your quantum compatibility didn't happen by accident. It was engineered—over centuries of selective breeding."

"That's impossible," Rory said. "My father only started Dumont Quantum Research thirty years ago."

"That's what Henri wanted you to believe," Zanna said. "But your family's involvement goes back much further—to the first quantum experiments in the 1800s."

Zanna's butterflies reunited, showing old photographs: stern-faced men and women with familiar features—Dumonts and Rykards from the past, working together on strange machines.

"The two families were once partners," Zanna continued. "Working to understand and harness quantum reality. Until the split in 1923, when they chose different paths."

"What split?" Max asked.

"The Great Quantum Schism," Zanna responded. "When your great-grandparents discovered the first natural quantum enhanced human—and disagreed about what to do with her."

The baby suddenly squirmed in Rory's arms, his field shining brighter than ever. TRUTH COMING. LISTEN WELL.

"The Dumonts wanted to study her," Zanna stated. "The Rykards wanted to protect her. Sound familiar?"

Max and Rory traded uncomfortable glances.

"So you see," Zanna smiled, "your marriage wasn't just a business arrangement. It was fate—the reuniting of two legacy families whose paths have been intertwined for generations."

"If what you're saying is true," Camille said slowly, "then what happened to that first enhanced human?"

Zanna's smile faded. "She became something else. Something beyond human. The records call her 'the Ascended One.'"

The baby's field glowed with recognition. GRANDMOTHER OF GRANDMOTHERS. FIRST AWAKENED.

"Enough history," Max said strongly. "We need to make a decision about the alliance."

Rory looked down at her baby, whose eyes swirled with ancient knowledge. "What do you think we should do?"

PARTIAL TRUTH. USEFUL ALLY. DANGEROUS FRIEND.

Rory took a deep breath. "We'll provide anonymous quantum readings only. No direct access to the baby. And we want full access to your predictive models in return."

"Acceptable," Zanna nodded. "But we need to begin immediately. The void entities are already responding to Elijah's experiments."

Max stepped closer to Zanna's image. "There's one more condition. When this is over, you share everything you know about our families' history. No more secrets."

"That knowledge comes with a price, Maximilian Rykard," Zanna warned. "Once known, it cannot be unknown."

"I'm tired of being kept in the dark," Max declared.

Zanna studied him, then nodded. "Very well. Alliance accepted."

As if on cue, alarms blared throughout the church. Sofia rushed to check the tracking systems.

"Multiple quantum breaches!" she yelled. "All across the city!"

The screens showed fractures forming on every street, in every building. Void beings poured through by the thousands. And above it all, the Void King's massive form stretched his arms wide, as if welcoming the chaos.

"It's begun," Zanna said grimly. "The final convergence."

The baby's field suddenly expanded, touching everyone's thoughts with urgent clarity. NEED ALL FACTIONS. NEED MOTHER AND FATHER TOGETHER.

"Father?" Rory looked down at her child in confusion. "But your father is—"

Before she could finish, the baby projected a picture into everyone's minds: Max standing beside Rory, both of them channeling quantum energy to protect the child.

NOT BIRTH FATHER, the baby explained. CHOSEN FATHER. QUANTUM BOND STRONGER THAN BLOOD.

Max's face showed shock, then determination. He moved to Rory's side and put his hand gently on the baby's head. "I'll protect you both. Whatever it takes."

As their energies connected, the baby's field grew stronger, more stable. But in that moment of bonding, the baby shared one more vision—private, just for Rory and Max.

The Void King's real form, hidden behind Henri's face.

The true enemy they would have to face.

And it wasn't what any of them expected.
