Chapter 60: The First Stabilizer

The void beings' tendril stopped just inches from the Quantum Core in Rory's hands. It floated there, as if studying her. Then, to everyone's shock, it pulled back.

"What just happened?" Rory whispered, holding the Core to her chest.

"They recognize you," Max said. "And the baby."

Outside, the three factions—Digital Ascendance, Brotherhood, and Natural Path—had started fighting each other, unaware of the greater danger above them.

"We don't have much time," Sofia said, running to a big workbench at the side of the Archives. "The void beings are just... curious for now. But that won't last."

Camille joined her, pulling out drawers filled with tools and strange gadgets. "Henri's research is all here. We can build something to fix this."

"Fix what exactly?" Max asked, keeping watch at a window. "The tear in the sky? The quantum fractures?"

"All of it," Camille answered. She spread plans across the table. "Henri was working on a Quantum Stabilizer before he disappeared. Something that could heal the fractures naturally, without Valentin's artificial process."

Rory put the Quantum Core on the table. "Will this help?"

"It's the key component," Sofia nodded. "The Core can communicate with quantum reality itself."

The baby squirmed in Rory's arms, his tiny face scrunched in focus. DANGER GROWS. HURRY.

Max grabbed tools and started helping Camille. "What do we need to do?"

"The stabilizer needs three things," Camille stated. "The Core as its heart, a focusing mechanism, and..."

"A human conductor," the Henri image finished, appearing beside them. "Someone whose quantum compatibility is fully activated."

Everyone turned to Rory.

"Me," she said. It wasn't a question.

"You're the only one who can channel the Core's energy properly," Camille said. "Your tattoos aren't just decoration—they're a map of quantum pathways."

Another blast rocked the Archives. Through the windows, they saw Valentin's forces breaking through the outer lines.

"We need to work faster," Max pushed.

For an hour, they worked madly. Rory held the baby while passing tools to Max and Sofia. Camille's hands moved with surprising skill, assembling the device according to Henri's plans.

The result looked simple: a silver disc the size of a dinner plate with the Quantum Core sealed in its center. Around the Core, intricate circuits made patterns that matched Rory's tattoos.

"It's ready," Camille announced. "But we should test it on a small area first."

Sofia checked her computer. "There's a quantum fracture in the next room. Perfect test site."

They moved quickly to a library where books floated in mid-air, caught in a wave of broken reality. The crack pulsed with sickly yellow light.

"How does this work?" Rory asked, taking the stabilizer from Camille.

"Hold it with both hands," Camille directed. "Focus your thoughts on healing, on making things whole again."

Rory gave the baby to Max. The moment they parted, both Rory and the baby winced in pain.

"What's wrong?" Max asked, worried.

"Our connection," Rory explained. "It hurts to break it."

The baby's lower lip shook. MOTHER CAREFUL.

"I will be," she promised.

Rory held the stabilizer toward the crack. She closed her eyes, thinking about healing the torn world, making it whole again. Her tattoos began to glow, following the patterns on the device.

Nothing happened.

"It's not working," she said, irritated.

"You're trying too hard," Sofia offered. "Quantum particles respond to intention, not force. Remember what Henri's hologram said about your rebellion?"

Rory thought back to her teenage years. The freedom she felt getting each tattoo. The power of making her own choices.

She relaxed her grip on the stabilizer and simply meant for the fracture to heal.

The Core blazed with blue light. Energy flowed through Rory's tattoos, down her arms, and into the device. A beam of pure blue light shot from the stabilizer into the center of the crack.

The yellow light faded. Books stopped moving. Reality put itself back together.

"It worked!" Max exclaimed.

Rory felt dizzy but thrilled. "We did it!"

But her party was cut short. The baby in Max's arms began to cry—not a regular baby cry, but a sound of quantum distress that made the air vibrate.

MOTHER FADING! his voice cried in their minds.

Rory looked down at her hands. Her marks were dimmer. She felt weaker, as if something vital had been drained from her.

"What's happening to me?" she asked.

Camille's face went pale. "The stabilizer works by channeling natural quantum energy through you. But it's taking that energy from your connection to the baby."

"What does that mean?" Max asked.

"It means," Sofia said sadly, "that using the stabilizer weakens their bond. If Rory uses it too much..."

"I could lose my connection to him completely," Rory finished, horrified.

The Archives shook again. Through the windows, they saw Valentin's forces breaking through the inner walls. The void beings' tentacles were probing deeper into the building. And worst of all, new cracks were opening throughout the Archives.

"We need to make a decision," Max said. "We can use the stabilizer to heal the major fractures, maybe even close the tear in the sky."

"But I might lose my baby," Rory whispered, taking him back from Max. The moment they touched, both sighed with relief as their link strengthened again.

CHOICE HARD, the baby said. BUT NECESSARY.

"There has to be another way," Camille insisted, flipping through Henri's notes furiously.

Sofia's tablet beeped frantically. "Valentin's in the building! And he's not alone."

The main door to the library burst open. Valentin stood there, flanked by guards. But something was wrong with him. His eyes glowed yellow—the same sickly color as the quantum cracks.

"The First Stabilizer," he said, his voice overlaid with something uncanny. "Give it to me, Rory."

Behind him stood a person that made everyone gasp—Henri Dumont, Rory's father. His eyes glowed the same yellow as Valentin's.

"Father?" Rory whispered.

"That's not your father anymore," Max said, stepping between Rory and the strangers. "And that's not Valentin either."

The baby's field flared protectively. VOID PUPPETS. RUN!

Rory clutched the stabilizer in one hand and her baby in the other. A terrible choice loomed before her: use the device to save the world but risk losing her child, or protect her link to the baby while reality crumbled around them.

Behind the possessed Henri and Valentin, more yellow eyes glowed in the darkness.
