Chapter 51 Forty-Eight Hours

Chapter 51 Forty-Eight Hours
The next morning, Elena woke up feeling different. She wasn't better, but felt less like she was suffocating.

One hour outside had given her something she'd been missing, a reminder that the world still existed beyond concrete walls. That she was still part of it.

She got up, showered, and headed downstairs. Pierce was in the kitchen, coffee already made. He looked up when she entered, and their eyes met briefly before both looked away.

"Good morning," Pierce said.

"Morning." Elena poured coffee. "Thank you again, for yesterday."

"You already said that."

"I know." She said gently. "But I mean it."

Pierce nodded, something shifting in his expression. "Same time today, If you want."

"I'd love to." Her lips curved slightly.

They stood in the kitchen, drinking coffee in almost-comfortable silence, when Elena's phone rang.

She pulled it out, frowning at the unknown number. "Hello?"

"Ms. Davis?" A male voice said. "This is Cyrus Lancaster from Lancaster & Associates. We're the legal firm handling D'Corporation's transition."

Elena's stomach dropped. "Yes?"

"We need to speak with you immediately about a critical matter regarding the company."

"Can this wait?" She said, heart pounding slightly. "I'm dealing with a family emergency...."

"I'm afraid it can't." Cyrus's voice was serious. "The board of directors has filed a motion to contest the ownership transfer on the grounds of abandonment of fiduciary duty."

Elena's blood went cold. "What?"

"You've been absent from the company for three weeks, Ms. Davis. No board meetings. No strategic decisions. No public appearances. The stock has dropped thirty percent due to what the media is calling a 'leadership vacuum.'"

"I've been..." Elena struggled with the words. "There were complicating circumstances...."

"The board doesn't care about circumstances. They care about protecting shareholder value." Cyrus paused. "They're giving you forty-eight hours to appear for an emergency board meeting. If you don't show up, they have legal grounds to challenge the transfer and potentially reinstall the previous management structure."

"Alfred's people," Elena breathed.

"Exactly. You need to be at D'Corporation headquarters Wednesday at 9 AM. If you're not there, you'll lose the company."

Elena gripped the phone tighter. "I'll be there."

"Good. I'll send you the details." Cyrus hung up.

Elena stood there, phone still pressed to her ear, feeling her world tilt sideways.

Pierce was watching her. "What happened?"

"It's the company." Her voice shook slightly. "The board is threatening to contest the ownership transfer."

"On what grounds?"

"Abandonment." Elena set down her phone with shaking hands. "I've been gone three weeks. No meetings, no decisions, nothing. The stock dropped thirty percent and they're calling it a leadership vacuum."

Pierce's expression darkened. "They can't do that. Alfred signed over full ownership..."

"But I haven't taken control. I haven't even shown up." Elena pressed her hands to her face. "I was so focused on surviving, on staying hidden, I didn't think about what my absence would do to the company."

"That's not your fault..."

"It doesn't matter whose fault it is." Elena looked at him. "I have forty-eight hours to appear for an emergency board meeting or I lose everything my father built."

Pierce went very still. "When?"

"Wednesday. 9 AM."

"That's two days from now."

"I know."

"Elena, you can't..."

"I have to." Her voice was firm. "If I don't show up, Alfred's people get control back. Everything he did, everything you did to get that company away from him, it's all for nothing."

"You'll be exposed." Pierce moved closer, his voice urgent. "The moment you step foot in that building, Xander and Rodrigo will know where you are. They'll move on you. Probably in the parking garage, or on your way in, or..."

"I know, Pierce." Elena said, cutting him off. "But I don't have a choice."

"Yes you do." His voice was sharp. "You let the company go..."

"That's not a choice!" Elena's voice rose. "That company is the only thing I have left of my father. The only piece of him that survived. I'm not letting Alfred's cronies steal it because I was too scared to show up."

"This isn't about being scared..."

"Then what is it about?" Elena asked, cutting him off again. "Staying hidden while my father's legacy crumbles? Letting everything he worked for disappear because it's safer?"

"Staying alive," Pierce said flatly. "It's about staying alive."

"What's the point of staying alive if I lose everything that makes life worth living?" Elena's voice cracked. "My parents are dead. My career is gone. I haven't seen my best friend in weeks. I'm trapped in a bunker going slowly insane and now you're asking me to give up the one thing I have left?"

Pierce's jaw tightened. "I'm asking you not to walk into an ambush."

"Then come with me." Elena stepped toward him. "Bring Derek, bring your whole crew. Cover every entrance, every exit. But I'm going to that meeting."

"Elena..."

"I'm going, Pierce." She said, her tone final. "With or without your help."

They stared at each other, the air crackling with tension.

"You'll die," Pierce said quietly. "Xander knows every security protocol we have. Rodrigo has been planning for weeks. The moment you surface, they'll know and they'll strike."

"Maybe." Elena's voice was steady. "But maybe they won't expect me to leave the bunker. Maybe they think I'm too scared to show my face."

"That's not a plan."

"It's the only one I have." Elena wrapped her arms around herself. "I can't lose the company, Pierce. I can't let Alfred win. Not after everything."

Pierce ran a hand through his hair, his expression tight with frustration and fear. "If I let you do this..."

"You're not letting me do anything." She said sharply. "I'm doing it whether you agree or not."

"Then I'm coming with you."

"Obviously."

Pierce pulled out his phone, already dialing. "Marcus. I need a full security detail for Wednesday morning... D'Corporation headquarters... I know it's exposed, I know it's dangerous. Do it anyway."

He hung up and looked at Elena. "You stay by my side the entire time. You don't leave my sight. You don't go anywhere without Derek or me."

"Okay."

"And the second the meeting is over, we're gone. No lingering, no small talk, no nothing."

"Fine."

Something shifted in Pierce's expression, respect, maybe.

"Wednesday morning," he said. "We leave at seven. They'll be full security detail. Derek, Leo, Marcus, and me. You wear a vest under your clothes."

"A bulletproof vest?" She asked, shocked.

"Yes." He said firmly.

Elena sighed. "Fine."

"And if anything...anything...goes wrong, you do exactly what I say." His voice was sharp. "No arguments, no hesitation."

"Okay."

Pierce stared at her for a long moment, clearly wrestling with the decision. Then he pulled out his phone again and started making calls.

Elena stood in the kitchen, listening to him coordinate security, plan routes, assess threats.

Wednesday was two days from now. It would be the first time she'd leave this bunker since arriving.

The first time she'd be vulnerable in public since Rodrigo's men had attacked her hotel.

Elena pressed a hand to her stomach, trying to calm the anxiety building there.

She could die Wednesday. Could walk into that board meeting and never walk out.

But she couldn't let fear make her decisions anymore. Couldn't let Alfred's people steal her father's legacy because it was safer to hide.

She'd spent three weeks letting other people control her life, Pierce, Rodrigo, Xander, the circumstances.

Wednesday, she was taking some of that control back.

Even if it killed her.

Behind her, Pierce's voice was cold and precise as he planned every detail of the security operation. Every route. Every contingency. Every way to keep her alive.

And despite everything, despite their broken relationship, Elena was grateful he was on her side.

Because if anyone could get her through Wednesday alive, it was Pierce Diego.

She just hoped it would be enough.
