Chapter Forty-nine: Utterly Hazed

We manage to eat dinner. We neglected to close the blinds. Moonlight starts filtering inside. Sam exclaims, “Crap!”

“Before you go insane, I guess we could get the run out of the way,” I suggest.

Steven asks worriedly, “Um guys why can't I control my shift?”

He's in the process of shifting. I ask, “Sam, what's wrong”

Sam says, “Nothing it's his first. It's normal for some to lose control at the start of their first haze.”

“Some or all?” I ask.

Sam looks at me, “Usually all, but you don't seem to have an issue.”

Vincent suggests, “Maybe she hazed before but didn't shift.”

Sam shrugs, “Possibly, or her not being full wolf has something to do with it or she's not a wolf at all. I was onto something earlier.”

“Katie, go let Steven outside,” I tell her.

“Should I sit outside with him?” she asks.

“If you want. He might be able to talk here to in a bit, because some of us can in wolf form,” I say.

“So I'll be able to converse with him?” she asks me.

“Yep, just like normal but he'll be in wolf form,” I reply.

Katie goes to take care of Steven, so I turn to Sam, “Let's run, and then maybe we can talk.”

Sam and I shift. I use my telekinesis to let us outside. I takeoff running after I swish my tail a bit. I love being a tease. I dart back towards the house. Vincent and Eric are just watching us run around while laughing at our antics. It's a nice night too. The air smells crisp and clean and feels amazing running through my fur. Sam goes to nab me. I disappear.

He looks around, “I know you're still here. I sense you.”

I reappear on his back and bite his neck, “Revenge babe!”

He tried to shake me off to no avail. It's kinda fun. I let go and give him a good lick and then run super fast back into the house. As I shift back, I'm laughing.

Vincent says in amazement, “Well, I've never seen a wolf do that!”

I grin, “I warned him that I wouldn't play fair.”

Eric looks at me awestruck, “With vampire speed in wolf form no one would see that coming.”

I beam with pride at my cleverness, “Not to mention to disappearing reappearing wolf bit!”

Sam huffs, “Cheater.”

I smirk, “Nah, just crafty.”

He sighs, “Yeah, now I'm gonna have a mark for days.”

I smile, “All is fair babe.”

“By the way, Steven is curled up on Katie's lap,” he tells me.

“That's kinda cute actually,” I say.

He gives me that look, “You know it's not normal.”

I glare at him, “F*ck normal! Are we normal?”

Sam shrugs, “I was till I met you.”

Vincent shakes his head, “I never was.”

“At least Vincent is being honest. Sam, you weren't normal. If you were you'd have found a decent temporary mate more hazes than not like the others do,” I say.

“How do you know that?” he asks.

“I did some research while I worked on my article,” I tell him. He gives me a snarky look so I say, “Before you make a snide comment remember I can deny you!”

He smirks, “But you can't.”

I laugh, “Oh, but I could play keep away all night.”

He shakes his head, “You're just plain evil.”

I smirk, “But you like it.”

“Why couldn't I have fallen for a nice normal wolf,” he says.

I pop some gummy bears in my mouth as I reply, “Because she'd be boring.”

Eric chuckles, “You know she's right. I settled and there's a huge difference.”

Vincent kisses my cheek, “Lust is good but when it is with your mate it's completely immersive so much that you lose touch with your surroundings.”

Sam grins, “The haze will do that.”

Vincent shakes his head, “Man that was before the haze. The haze just intensifies it. That instant love for my mate is what bound me to her.”

“The night you first brought her to the club, was when you realized it, wasn't it?” Eric asks Vincent.

He nods, “Yes, we had fought the whole concept of mates till then.”

I shrug, “I guess if you believe it gives it power.”

Eric looks me straight in the eyes, “It already had power, you just stopped blocking it.”

I look at each of them and then back to Eric, “Well can you blame me? I went from being single thinking I was human and that the supernatural world was just fantastical myths to being a mate to a vampire I just met.”

Eric grins as he adds, “And not just one vampire either.”

I throw my hands up, “It's all crazy and so not normal!”

“Yet here we are,” Eric says.

I nod, “True but it no longer feels alien.”

Vincent asks, “What does it feel like?”

I look at each man that I am in love with, “Home. Like after years adrift at sea, I've finally came to port in a safe harbor and was greeted by love that I long thought was lost forever.”

Home by Daughtry starts playing on the stereo in the living room. Vincent cocks his head as he asks, “Did you?”

I shake my head, “Not intentionally if it was me.”

Eric smiles, “It's fitting though as we've lived a lot of life to get here only to realize how empty it was without you, Eva. Our life was getting old without you.”

He extends his hand, “Dance with me.”

I smile and take it his outstretched hand. We waltz around the living room to the song. He dips and kisses me when the song ends. Sam then grabs me. Havana by Camila Cabello comes on. We so a slow sultry cha-cha. He can move which surprises me. He tosses me in the air and then catches me with a devouring kiss.

Then Vincent takes me into his arms. Love Lockdown by Kanye West comes on. I raise an eyebrow. He shakes his head, “I wrote it now hush!”

We engage in a fiery Argentinian Tango. The ebb and flow, the give and take, it pretty much symbolizes us. We both want to be in control but one must relent. The lyrics too have some meaning between us as neither of us wanted to fully admit the extent of our feelings to each other. We kept it locked down until it consumed us. I think we still are a bit. I think part of him thinks I'll have to choose, but I don't. What exists between us all is home and like nothing I have ever known. Maybe he also fears that his brother could sway me, but I'm not the boy-crazy type and never have been.

What exists in this house right now is my eternity and I'll let no one interfere with it. I'll die before that happens! We end the tango with me on the floor pulling him onto me. I'm not sure how I ended up here, but I'm not gonna complain. I don't remember being this great dancer either.

Vincent kisses me with so much passion. It's electric literally. Then we are hit with cold water as Katie yells, “Not in the living room!”

Sparks fly and hit the chandelier. It comes crashing down.

“F*ck I'm sorry I didn't know that would happen!” she exclaims.

We all burst with laughter. “Future reference Katie, water and electricity don't mix well,” Vincent says jokingly.

Katie looks concerned, “Um vampires aren't supposed to do that though.”

Eric sighs, “Well Vincent and I aren't normal. I'm a bit closer to a normal vampire than Vincent though. I just have pyrokinesis. He has some ability to carry and control electric current.”

Vincent tries to reassure her, “Eric is like my brother.”

She asks, “How long have you guys been this way?”

I blush and look away. “Eva!” she exclaims.

I sigh in defeat, “Vincent has been that way since we first kissed. The others since we've had sex.”

“Others?” she asks me.

Sam says, “I now float.”

“Wow!” she says as her eyebrows shoot up.

Vincent warns her, “No one can know.”

She rolls her eyes, “Obviously,” but she gets distracted and stares at me, “Eva, your eyes!”

“Crap, the haze!” I yell.
