Chapter 49: Cracks in the Pack

Kael returned to the packhouse, his steps heavy, his heart torn. The sky was dark, clouds veiling the moon. But even without seeing it, Kael felt the pull, the Blood Moon was close.

Aria stood by the window, staring into the night, her arms wrapped around herself. She turned the moment she felt him. Something in Kael’s eyes had changed… colder, more distant. But she said nothing.

The air grew tense over the next few days. The pack kept their distance, the hostility toward Aria almost unbearable. Whispers filled the air—“She’ll destroy us” … “Why does he protect her?”

But Aria barely heard them. She was fighting a bigger battle. One inside her.

It started slowly. A voice. A whisper only she could hear.

"Come to me…"

It was Mera. The Seer’s lingering essence clawing its way to the surface.

Aria tried to resist. She fought the pull. But every day, it grew stronger, feeding off her fear, her anger, her love for Kael.

One night, she woke up drenched in sweat, gasping for air. The moonlight filtering through the window turned crimson, like blood. Her reflection in the glass was not her own.

Silver eyes stared back at her.

"Soon, little one. Soon, we’ll be whole."

Aria screamed.

Kael burst into the room, heart racing. He found her crumpled on the floor, trembling, her hands clawing at her head as if trying to rip the voice out.

"She’s in my head," Aria sobbed. "I can’t… I can’t stop her."

Kael pulled her into his arms, but even his touch felt distant, like she was already slipping away.

And then he saw it—faint glowing marks along her skin, ancient symbols pulsing softly, proof the Seer was taking control.

The Blood Moon was awakening the Lunari inside her.

Kael buried his face in her hair, fighting back the tears.

"Stay with me, Aria. Fight her. I’m here."

But deep down, he knew… time was running out.

The final battle wasn’t against the world.

It was against time… and fate.

***

The next morning, the pack gathered in the courtyard, their faces grim, their eyes filled with barely concealed hatred. Word had spread. Aria’s connection to the Lunari was no longer a secret.

Kael stood before them, his expression cold, unreadable. Aria stood slightly behind him, pale and silent, her eyes downcast.

"Alpha," one of the warriors spoke, his voice sharp with anger, "we’ve followed you without question. Trusted you. But this…" He pointed at Aria. "This is betrayal. You’re choosing her. A ticking bomb, over your own pack."

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd.

"She is not one of us," another growled. "We feel it. There’s darkness in her. You know it. She’ll be the end of us, just like the prophecy says."

Aria flinched as if struck, heat filling up her body, her body trembling as she's feeling cold but Kael’s jaw tightens.

"Enough," Kael growled, his Alpha aura pulsing outward. "I know what she is. I know what’s at stake. But I will not kill her."

"Then we will," someone spat.

The words hit Kael like a blade. Before anyone could move, a wave of power burst from Aria, raw and uncontrollable. The ground trembled, the sky darkened, and a gust of wind sent several wolves crashing backward.

Her eyes were silver, glowing.

"Stop!" Kael roared, stepping between her and the pack, arms spread wide.

Aria’s breaths came in sharp gasps. The whispers were louder now. Kill them. Burn them all.

Kael turned to face her slowly, his heart breaking at the sight. "Aria… look at me. You’re not her. You’re still you."

Her lips trembled. "I can’t… I can’t stop it, Kael. They’re right. I’m the monster."

Kael stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Then let me be the fool who protects the monster. We’ll find another way, Aria. I swear it."

But the pack had seen enough.

"You’ve lost your mind, Alpha," a senior warrior hissed. "If you won’t protect us, we will protect ourselves."

Kael’s eyes turned pitch black as his wolf surfaced. "If anyone touches her… I’ll kill you myself."

The pack fell silent, caught between loyalty and fear.

Meanwhile, Mera’s whispers echoed louder in Aria’s mind, feeding off the chaos, the hate, and

her own crumbling heart.

The Blood Moon was almost here.

And Aria was breaking.
