Chapter 91 Truths That Bind Us
POV Ethan:
Scarlett did what?
I stare at her, perplexed, my hand frozen in midair on its way to bringing another strawberry to her mouth, trying to process what Damian just said. Scarlett is being sued by Chloe? How did Scarlett find out about Chloe and—? My doubt is automatically answered the moment I look at Noah, who pretends to look up at the ceiling.
“I’m waiting, Scarlett,” Damian insists.
“Oh, come on. I didn’t do anything that serious. Besides, I believe she exaggerated a bit about what we talked about. My call was cordial,” she said, getting up from Liam’s lap.
“Cordial? Then answer me, Miss Sympathy—why did you make that call?” my brother asked, making Scarlett grimace.
“Shit, you got me,” she muttered, crossing her arms. “Look, I know I had no right to call your ex to threa—talk to her, but damn it, try to understand me. She couldn’t do what she did and just walk around unpunished.”
“Scarlett…”
“No, Damian, don’t try to defend that opportunist. She’s lucky I didn’t fly to New York to punch her in the face.” I hide a smile; I don’t want my brother to get furious. “I… I don’t know how… I don’t know how to tell you something I found out.”
“Scarlett, you haven’t even told me how you found out about Chloe. I don’t know if I want to find out…”
“She didn’t abort your child.” Scarlett cuts Damian off, dropping the bomb all at once.
“What are you talking about?” Noah asked. Our attention turns to Scarlett, whose eyes are brimming with tears.
“She didn’t abort your child… because she was never pregnant by you.” Damian takes a step back. Fuck. Chloe didn’t do that.
“Noah told me everything about your past with her…” Damian shot a sideways look at our youngest brother, who didn’t seem to feel guilty.
“So I wanted to do my own research on the woman who hurt you. In one of the old articles published about her, I found an interview where she said she has trouble getting pregnant, that she only managed to get pregnant with her first child after undergoing several treatments.”
“Please tell me she didn’t do this.” My brother’s plea hurts me; we all know how hard that time was for him.
“I’m so sorry, Damian. I was blinded by hatred, so I looked for a way to get in touch with her.” Scarlett’s eyes dropped to her feet. “As soon as I managed to talk to her, I… hypothetically speaking, I may have threatened her that if she set foot in Detroit, or came anywhere near you, I would kill her with remnants of cruelty. I wasn’t serious. I just wanted to scare her, nothing more.”
She lifted her head to face us. My brothers and I raised our eyebrows, doubtful.
“Okay, I was very serious—hypothetically speaking, of course.”
“Scarlett, I…”
“Damian, I love you. I don’t want you to close yourself off again because of her. You looked for an escape from your pain; she made you believe a lie, and that affected you. I understand and I get it. Unfortunately, there was an irreversible consequence, but what we have left to do is move forward. Sometimes the best way to overcome a loss, whatever it may be, is to live. I love you. I’m not with you because of the children you could give me; I’m with you because I love you.” Scarlett held Damian’s face, making my brother look at her.
For the second time in a long while, I can see my brother’s pain because of Chloe’s actions. Damian lost so much, while that woman… I hope the things she did to Damian never happen to anyone else again.
“I will never be able to give you a family.” I could barely hear my brother’s voice. “I will never—”
“Damian…” Scarlett interrupted, caressing his face.
“Yes.”
“You gave me a family the moment you entered my life. I will never be able to thank you enough.” Scarlett rested her forehead against Damian’s chest. “I love you, my love. No matter how many babies I give birth to, the four of you will be the parents.” Scarlett pulled away from Damian’s arms, calling us to come closer. “I will never want to know who the biological father of the children we will have is. We are a unit. What belongs to one belongs to all. Are we agreed?” I smile, proud of the woman I chose… who chose us to share her life with her.
“I love you, Scarlett,” I said, kissing her forehead.
“I love you, princess,” Noah said, kissing her cheek.
“I love you, my love,” Liam said, kissing her temple.
“What would our lives be like if you hadn’t parked in my spot?” Damian asked, making us laugh.
“Probably boring,” Scarlett replied with a shrug.
“I love you, you petulant woman. Thank you for what you did, even if it costs you a few weeks in jail.”
“What?” Scarlett shouted. “My God, can I be arrested? What will Aria think of me? I can be arrested…” Scarlett panicked.
“Scarlett, I’m joking,” Damian said, making her blush.
“Run!”
“What—”
“Run, because as soon as I get my hands on you, asshole, you’re fucked.” Damian looked at me, and I shrugged. There’s no way to know when Scarlett is serious.
Damian started running, and Scarlett didn’t take long to chase after him. A few minutes later, my brothers and I went upstairs and found them on the bed making lo—fucking with fury. Perfect. Living with the two of them is a guarantee that we will never be bored.
