Chapter 48: Chapter 48.

Jane's POV.

I stepped out of my apartment, and just then someone also stepped into the apartment that was opposite mine. But it wasn't the stepping in or the apartment that was the issue, the issue was that this person has the back view of someone very familiar, someone I would never make a mistake about.

No... it can't be. It can never be. He would never stay in a place like this.

Locking my door, I walked downstairs.

Reaching outside the building I froze, seeing Ethan leaning against his car. Why does he never give up? I don't want to hurt him.

I walked over to him, and slapped his back lightly.

"Ah, Jane," he feigned pain as he turned to face me.

"How did you know it was me?" I asked, surprised at how quickly he knew the fact.

"Because only you would have the audacity to hit a judge," he replied, and I laughed.

"Silly," I shook my head.

He opened the car door, ushering me into the car. He climbed in too, and in a few minutes we were on the road.

"You didn't have to stress yourself to come pick me up," I spoke.

"Stress myself?" He chuckled. "I'm trying to be a good Dad."

I froze, my eyes snapping at him instantly.

"Uncle," he corrected quickly. "I'm trying to be a good uncle."

"Oh," I nodded.

That was a close one.

As long as Adrian is alive, he'll never let another man take his place as a father in his child's life. Never. As much as I know him, he'll stoop to any length for his child. That was the sole reason he had even married me in the first place so...

"Speaking of uncle," Ethan spoke again. "When is your child's ultrasound?" He asked.

I gave a loud gasp, and Ethan quickly stepped on the brake, bringing the car to a stop.

"Are you alright?" He searched my body with deep worry in his eyes.

"It's today," I spoke.

"What?" He was confused. "What's today? The ultrasound?"

"No..." I shook my head. "...my check up."

Ethan breathed in relief, sinking back into his seat. "Don't ever pull that again. I literally had a heart attack."

"Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know it'd affect you that way," I apologized.

"Girl, you made my soul jump out of my body, and made it jump right back in again," he nagged.

I shook my head, rolling my eyes.

Ethan and his drama.

"So what time is it?" He asked next.

"I don't know but I should be at the hospital by 9 am," I replied.

He looked at his wristwatch. "This is a few minutes to 8, and I have a trial by 9."

"Oh, no," I gasped. "Then you should be at the courthouse by now."

"Mmmm," he nodded. "But let's get you to the hospital."

No, he shouldn't miss his trial just because of me.

"Ethan, you'll—"

"I'll just drop you at the hospital and drive straight to the courthouse," he cut me off.

I nodded. Although, I'm not totally satisfied with it, this suggestion is a lot better than the previous one.

"Okay?" He asked.

I rolled my eyes. What was the need of asking me when he'd still do what he wanted.

"Okay," I gave him an approval that didn't come from my heart.

With that, he turned on the engine, and began driving again.

My phone rang and it ended up being the next person that I don't want to see right now after Adrian.

"Are you insane?! You divorced Adrian?!" My brother's angry voice almost deafened me.

"How dare you divorced him? And that too without my permission?! Are you crazy?!" He shouted. "How dare you divorce him? I fucking got your stupid ass married to him so how dare you divorce him without my permission?!"

"Hey, Marcus Reed, have you gone mad?!" I yelled, my voice loud enough that it made Ethan jolt in his seat.

"Who fucking gave you the authority to call me so early in the morning just to yelp up thrash at me?!" I returned his energy.

"I'm your elder brother!" He shot.

"And I'm a lawyer!" I shot back. "I can absolutely file a case against you for being a threat to my life."

"Hey, Jane Reed!" He yelled.

"See you in court!" I yelled back and hung up on him.

There was a long silence in the car before Ethan finally spoke. "Are you alright?"

"I got married without my permission, my husband treated me badly, and when I divorce him, I found out I'm pregnant with his child. He pushes up and I try to bear with him, and when I can no longer put up with him I leave him, only to get media backlash, and now I have to handle a foolish elder brother. Do you think I'm okay?"

Ethan cleared his throat and focused on driving. "Definitely not," he responded.

My phone rang again once, twice, three times but I didn't answer it.

"I think you should pick up otherwise he'll blow up your phone with calls," Ethan advised quietly.

Reluctantly, I took his advice. "What?!" I yelled, answering the call.

"Do you have any idea what you have just done? Do you know what you have done to the company?!" He roared.

"Company?" I scoffed. "All you think about is the company. Have you ever asked me how I'm doing?" I broke, my emotions taking over.

"Because I know you're fine," he responded like it was the most normal thing to say.

I scoffed again. "You're so stupid."

I ended the call, a tear rolling down my cheek. I was never lucky in choosing family.

My mother died without my permission, my father died too without any prior notice, my brother is nothing to write home about, and my husband... he's the worst.

I wiped my face quickly, I wouldn't let anyone ruin my day. At least not that easily.

Ethan said nothing, and just continued driving. I was grateful for that. I was in no mood for any conversation, not right now.

He finally pulled to a stop. "We're here," he said, and I looked up to see the hospital building looming over us.

"Thank you," I finally spoke, stepping out of the car.

"Jane," he called as soon as I shut the door. I bent a little so I could see his face.

"Take care," he said, his voice soft, and his eyes... they shouldn't be having those feelings in them.

I smiled, flashing him a cool smile.

With no further words, I turned and walked into the hospital.

Reaching the reception, it was crowded with people. I walked over to the counter and greeted a nurse there. "Good morning," I greeted.

"Good morning, madam," she replied with a smile.

"I have an antenatal appointment," I said.

"Oh, may I see your appointment card?" She asked.

Appointment card? Oh, shit! Was I ever given such a thing.

"I—"

"Here's it," I saw a familiar hand come into view and in it was a card.

I turned to find Adrian beside me, his hand still stretched forward to the nurse with a card in it.

My breath caught. When did he—

"This is my wife's appointment card."
