Chapter 17: The Broadcast

The current slammed Valentina against a street sign. She grabbed it, gasping for breath as icy water tried to pull her under. Her fingers were numb, but she held on with all her strength.

Dawn was breaking, painting the flooded city in pale light. Valentina could see the damage now – buildings torn open like dollhouses, cars floating like toys, and people still stranded on roofs.

"Maria," she whispered, searching the water behind her. There was no sign of the girl or her father.

With shaking arms, Valentina pulled herself up the sign until she could see the police station Dante had mentioned. It stood on slightly higher ground, its second floor still above water.

Taking a deep breath, she pushed off and swam toward it, fighting against the stream. Every stroke was pain, but the thought of Maria kept her going.

When she finally reached the station, Valentina dragged herself through a broken window. Inside, the first floor was underwater, but she found a ladder and climbed to the second level.

"Hello?" she called, her voice booming through empty halls.

No answer. The police had evacuated.

Valentina searched furiously until she found what she needed – a small rescue boat with outboard motor in a storage area. Getting it to water would be tough, but she had no choice.

As she fought with the boat, a radio crackled to life in the police station's command center.

"This is an emergency broadcast. All citizens tune to this frequency."

Valentina froze. That was Alessio's voice.

She ran to the radio and picked up the microphone. "Alessio? It's me, Valentina!"

"Val!" Her brother's voice cracked with relief. "Where are you? We've been searching all night!"

"Police station near the market. I need help – there's a girl and her father stranded on a rooftop, but it was collapsing when I got swept away."

"Stay there," Alessio ordered. "Rico and Sophia are leading rescue boats in that area. We're coordinating from the radio station."

"The radio station?"

"We're exposing everything. The Blackwoods, the corruption, all of it. Detective Chen is here with me."

Hope rushed through Valentina. "I'm coming to you. There's a boat here I can use."

"Be careful," Alessio warned. "And Val... Eleanor Blackwood is alive."

Ice formed in Valentina's stomach. "That's impossible. Chen shot her."

"Bulletproof vest. She's wounded but escaped. Her men are looking for you."

Valentina's mind raced. She had to get to the radio station fast.

With renewed drive, she managed to push the boat out a window and lower it into the water. The outboard motor sputtered to life on the second try, and soon she was crossing the flooded streets.

As she passed familiar buildings, now half-submerged, Valentina spotted something that made her heart leap – a small group huddled on a fire escape. One of them was waving wildly.

"Maria!" Valentina steered toward them, relief washing over her.

The girl's face lit up when she recognized Valentina. "You came back!"

"I promised, didn't I?" Valentina helped them into the boat. The father was aware now but dazed. "I'll get you to safety."

"Where are we going?" Maria asked.

"The radio station. My brother is there."

As they drove through the flooded city, Valentina was amazed to see people helping each other everywhere. Makeshift rafts brought families to higher ground. People shared food and blankets. Strangers worked together to rescue those still stuck.

"The water is bringing out the best in people," Maria noticed.

"Sometimes it takes a disaster to remind us we're all human," Valentina responded.

When they reached the radio station on high ground, Sophia was waiting outside.

"Thank goodness," she said, hugging Valentina. "Alessio's been going crazy with worry."

After making sure Maria and her father were taken care of, Valentina rushed inside. The main show room was a hive of activity. Rico sat at a computer, going through files from the metal box. Detective Chen was on a phone, coordinating with other cops. And at the middle, speaking into a microphone, was Alessio.

"—evidence shows the Blackwood family has been poisoning our city for decades," he was saying. "They pitted the crime families against each other while they pulled the strings. They murdered anyone who threatened to expose them, including Valentina Moretti's real parents."

Valentina's heart swelled with pride as she watched her brother. The cold, calculating Viper was gone, replaced by a man of fire and purpose.

When Alessio spotted her, he wrapped up his segment and ran to embrace her.

"I thought I'd lost you," he whispered.

"It takes more than a flood to stop me," she responded. "How's Dante?"

"Recovering. He sent men with boats to help with rescues." Alessio directed her to the microphone. "People need to hear your story too."

Valentina paused, but only for a moment. Then she sat down and began to speak.

"My name is Valentina Moretti. Last night, I watched Eleanor Blackwood try to destroy our city. I've seen her files, read her plans. The Blackwoods wanted to drown the lower city so they could rebuild it for profit. They didn't care how many people died."

As she spoke, Rico gave her pages from her parents' journal. Valentina read their words – the truth they had died to protect.

All across the city, people listened. In shelters, in boats, on roofs – they heard the truth at last.

When she finished, Detective Chen took over, describing how the police would arrest the remaining Blackwood allies. The system of corruption was crumbling, revealed to the light.

"You did it," Alessio said happily. "You finished what our parents started."

Suddenly, Rico burst into the room. "Eleanor's been spotted! She's at the private airfield, trying to escape by helicopter!"

"We can't let her get away," Valentina said, jumping to her feet.

Alessio nodded sadly. "Let's end this."

They rushed to Chen's police car. The detective drove while Valentina and Alessio prepared their guns.

"There's something I need to tell you," Valentina said. "I found more documents in the box – about our real family. Our parents weren't just journalists. They were undercover agents investigating the Blackwoods."

Alessio stared at her in shock. "What?"

"They infiltrated the crime world to gather evidence. When they got too close to the truth, Eleanor had them killed."

"So everything we became—"

"Was because of her," Valentina finished. "She orphaned us, and we became what we had to in order to survive."

A new purpose filled Alessio's eyes. "Then it's fitting we take her down together."

They reached the airport as Eleanor's helicopter was powering up. The hurt woman was being helped aboard by two armed guards.

"Stop!" Chen yelled, pulling out her gun.

Eleanor's guards opened fire. They ducked behind the car as shots pinged off metal.

"Cover me," Valentina said. "I'm going around the back."

Before Alessio could stop her, she was running, staying low as she circled behind the chopper. Her heart hammered in her chest, but her hands were steady.

As she reached the far side of the chopper, Valentina saw her chance. The pilot was distracted by the fighting. She slipped closer, then made a dash for the pilot.

The pilot saw her too late. Valentina yanked open the door and pulled him out, sending them both falling to the ground.

Eleanor screamed in rage as her escape actually fell apart before her eyes.

"It's over, Eleanor!" Valentina shouted over the roar of the rotors.

"Nothing is over until I say it is!" Eleanor growled, pulling out a small device – another detonator.

Horror washed over Valentina. What else had the woman rigged to explode?

"Last chance," Eleanor called out to everyone. "Let me go, or I destroy what's left of this pathetic city!"

Valentina met her brother's eyes across the runway. A silent understanding passed between them.

In one smooth move, Valentina lunged for the helicopter. Eleanor's finger pressed down on the detonator as Valentina tackled her, sending them both falling out the other side.

A huge explosion rocked the city center in the distance. Flames rose into the sky as another part of their world fell.

Valentina and Eleanor rolled across the ground, fighting for control. Despite her wounds, Eleanor was strong, driven by despair and hate.

"You're just like your mother," Eleanor hissed, her hands closing around Valentina's throat. "Too stubborn to know when to give up!"

Spots danced before Valentina's eyes as she tried to breathe. Her fingers scrambled across the ground, looking for something, anything to use.

Her hand closed around cold metal – Eleanor's dropped gun.

Their eyes met. Eleanor saw the weapon too late.

The sound of the gunshot echoed across the airfield, followed by a terrible quiet.
