CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
AURORA'S P.O.V
My heart thundered in my chest, breath caught somewhere between my lungs and lips. The pen nearly slipped from my fingers. My first instinct was to run, but my feet wouldn’t move.
"Aurora?"
Eleanor called me, I shook myself and slowly walked away, my heart beating so fast to make sure he didn't hear me.
"Sorry, I took long...um I...was...um...sorry."
How was I going to tell her that her husband wanted to kill his own son or was it Lucian? No I'm sure its not. I mean, I'm sure there are many guys in the pack that he might want to kill. Right?
She looked at me quizzically, "Are you okay? Did he say something again?"
"Say something?" My eyes flew open, my palms began to sweat as I shook my head like a broken doll. "No. Let's go." I laughed nervously.
The dungeon was dark and damp, the air thick with the scent of mold and decay making me wrinkle my nose in disgust. Immediately I saw him, relief washed through my body and I couldnt help taking a deep breath as I walked faster towars him, it felt like if I didn't get to him fast enough, he might just disappear. He was pacing back and forth in his cell, his face dark and hollow with anger.
When he saw me, his expression softened, and he rushed to the bars.
"Aurora, what are you doing here?"
I smiled, feeling a wave of relief wash over me as I placed my hand on the silver laced bars, it stung a little but I could hear it.
"I'm here to get you out of this place."
Lucian's eyes narrowed. "What did my father do?"
I felt my heart drop, recalling what I had heard. I glanced at Eleanor, who nodded encouragingly.
"He agreed to release you, he was going to make me reject you and leave the pack. I almost agreed to it until your mom appeared like a bad ass and took care of it."
Lucian's expression darkened.
"I knew it, this was all a part of his schedule. Mom, thank you for coming in time to stop him, its been a long time coming and I'm proud of you."
Eleanor stepped forward, her voice soft as she took out the keys and began to unlock the chains on the door.
"Thank you my son. I'm really sorry for letting this go on for this long. I should have stood my ground from the first time he sent you here when you were little."
Lucian's eyes flashed with tears as he shook his head and pushed the door open, gently, he took her in his arms, a warm look on his face.
"You don't have to apologize, I knew you had no choice back then. I'm just glad you finally realized you could stand for yourself now."
"Thank you, Lucian."
She murmured softly, her voice shaky while a few tears slid down her cheeks, I watched the scene with a warm expression on my face but the scene I had witnessed still forced a way into my mind. What do I do with this information? Should I tell him? I can't tell his mom, I do t know why but I feel like I can't. He noticed me staring at smiled at me, I smiled back, my lips trembling. Then he disengaged with his mom and opened his arms while winking at me. A scoff escaped my lips as I rolled my eyes and went in for the hug. He pulled me closer, tighter as he breathed my scent in.
"I missed you." He whispered, I felt his breath and shivered.
"Um...I missed you too...ish." At least for now, I should forget it.
He chuckled, I felt the vibration on my face.
"As long as you missed me."
"Ahem!" A soft clearing of throat was heard behind is, we turned to see his mom grinning at us, her eyes twinkling.
"I see you have been making progress my son." She winked at him.
"Mom!" He grunted.
I ducked my head, suddenly shy as I came out from his grasp.
"Um...let's leave this place...right?" I asked nervously, they both nodded, Eleanor still smiling.
As we reached the pack house, Eleanor turned to me, a warm smile on her face.
"Aurora, would you like to join me for dinner? I think it's time we got to know each other better."
I smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards her. "I'd love to."
Lucian's eyes met mine, and I could see the relief in them, the happiness.
The dinner was a lively affair, with Eleanor asking me questions about myself, and Lucian chiming in with his own thoughts and opinions. Alpha Desmond was, thankfully, noticeably absent, and I couldn't help but wonder what was going on with him? How was he feeling after all his plans had been thwarted, by his wife no less.
As the evening drew to a close, Eleanor smiled at me, her eyes warm as she stated at me with motherly affection in her eyes. I almost leaned towards her because of the warmth I felt from her, having never had a mother myself, this feeling was both foreign and welcoming to me.
"Aurora, I think you're exactly what Lucian needs. Welcome to the family."
I smiled, feeling a sense of belonging but still a bit skeptical at how long I will be welcomed since I was still not sure if I wanted to live the rest of my live with Lucian as my mate.
"Thank you, Eleanor."
She waved her hand.
"Come on, I'll be your mother in law soon enough. Call me mother or mom."
I blinked uncertainly at her as I glanced at Lucian. His eyes met mine, wide and shocked. I could see the uneasiness in them, I rushed to assure him with a smile for the time being.
"Sure...m...mom."
She giggled as the name, looking younger. "Thank you."
After dinner, he walked me out of the dinning room and asked if I wanted to follow him.
"Where to?"
He tilted his head.
"To go see Griffin, then maybe go see Talia, I have a feeling he might be there."
"Sure." I nodded but my mind was confused when he said Griffin would be at Talia's place. Was something wrong, did anything happen? Should I tell him that I suspect his dad might want him dead?
Unable to bear the fast beating rate of my heart and the probability that I might be hiding something crucial from him, I stopped walking and called him.
"Hey, there's something I need to...tell you?"
He stopped too and turned to face me, his eyes curious.
"Okay. What is it?"
I swallowed, took a deep breath then closed my eyes as I gritted out.
"I think your dad is trying to kill you!"
