Chapter 39 39
CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
LUCIAN'S P.O.V
I took a brief shower, dressed and headed for dad's office. He's got some explaining to do. How do you explain a prisoner's escape from the dungeon that I know? I have been to that dungeon before, its a dark, cold place with only one entrance and one set of keys. So if she got out, someone had to have helped her. For all I know she and dad could have made a deal together. Get rid of Aurora and I become hers.
I finally stopped in front of his office, but before I knocked, I took a deep breath. At times like this, I just had to calm and prepare myself for anything.
I knocked.
"Dad, its me."
A brief silence, I raised my hand again, about to knock.
"Come in." His stiff voice called out.
I opened the door and went in, closing it gently behind me. He was at his desk as his usual, his head lowered as he read some documents. Without looking up, he asked.
"What is it?"
I stopped in front of his desk, not bothering to sit down.
"A prisoner escaped yesterday..."
He paused for a while then he went on with his work.
"Go on."
"The lady that Aurora and Griffin saved me from, remember we put her in the dungeon?"
He grunted in response.
"Well, she escaped yesterday, took Aurora away in the dead of the night and tried to kill her. And she also had two accomplices."
"Did you get any information from the accomplices?"
I frowned, "No, we killed them before we got to do that, Aurora's life was in danger."
"And the prisoner?"
"Dead."
"I see. Well done."
He kept on looking at the documents, I got impatient and decided to ask.
"Was it you?"
He finally looked up slowly and narrowed his eyes at me, his face looked worn out and hollow with a few days worth of growth.
"What do you mean?".
I kept my eyes on his face.
"Did you release the prisoner, knowing fully well how crazy she was and told her to go after Aurora?"
He rubbed his eyes and relaxed back on his chair.
"And what makes you think I am the one responsible for that."
I shrugged while narrowing my eyes in thought.
"Oh, maybe because you have been trying to kill Aurora? Multiple times. In my presence and with my knowledge. Just so you can stop me from mating her. Isn't that enough reasons to think so?"
He scoffed and shook his head.
"There are many things I can do son. But colluding with a criminal to do my job for me is not one of it. I have no idea what you are talking about."
That was it, he went back to staring at the documents. It pained me to say, but I believed him even though I had no idea why. I turned back and headed towards the door when his voice stopped me.
"Have you given a thought to my condition? Your time is running out."
I gritted my teeth and bit the inside of my cheeks to stop me from saying something stupid. Especially about the fact that I knew why he hated Aurora. It took a lot of effort but I managed to stay quiet and left the office, slamming the door behind me.
As I walked down the corridor to my study, I muttered under my breath.
"I will not give you an answer, old man."
I met with Griffin and together we busied ourselves with matters relationship to the pack, at least the ones that I could handle. Like family disputes, a pack member's complaints and to my annoyance, a brief meeting with the pack elders. It was the same old thing, boring information about other packs, who got married, who died and how we could make our pack borders stronger. But today was a bit different as one elder decided to ask me just as they were leaving.
"Lucian, don't you think It's time to bond with your mate?"
"Excuse me?"
I blinked at him, shocked by the abrupt question.
He had shook his head.
"I don't think you should be hesitating on something as serious as the mate bond. Maybe, once you mate with her, your father can finally let you have the alpha title."
I had kept quiet as he rubbed me on my shoulder and left. Now in my study, I couldn't help chuckling as I thought back to the memory. It sounded so easy in his mouth. But he had no idea I was still fighting for both the acceptance of my love and my mate.
"Hey, are we finally done?"
Griffin plopped down on the seat in front of me and groaned, he looked exhausted as he rubbed his neck with a distracted look. I was going to ask him about that. Since today, he's been acting all out of it, spacing out at important times.
I knocked hard on the surface of my desk.
"Alright out with it."
He blinked, looked behind me then back at me as he pointed to himself.
"Are you talking to me?"
"No, I'm talking to my imaginary friend." I answered in a sarcastic voice. "Of course I'm talking to you."
"What is it?"
"You've been behaving strangely since today."
His eyes widened like someone caught in the spotlight, then he quickly shrugged and scratched his head.
"What do you mean? I'm fine."
I sighed as I leaned forward.
"No, my friend you're not. I caught you spacing out a lot today."
He shrugged again.
"I'm fine."
I narrowed my eyes as I began to narrate.
"At one of the meetings with some pack members, you were sipping your juice loudly while a mother was crying about her sick child, then when she looked at you, you actually laughed. Is that being fine? Spit it out!"
He winced softly, closing his eyes as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"I'm really sorry about that. Well..." He took a deep breath and cleared his throat.
"I found my mate yesterday."
