Chapter 8 Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Chapter 8
I can't breathe. Can't think. My daughter is gone.

"DANTE!" My scream echoes through the fortress.

He's there in seconds, still in wolf form. When he sees the empty bed and the message, he shifts back to human, his face twisted with rage and terror.

"Marcus," he gasps.

We run to our son's room. Empty. Another open window. Another message in shadow:

Tick tock, Luna Queen. How long will you make me wait?

I collapse to my knees. Both children. The demon has both my children.

"We're going to the temple," Dante says, his voice deadly calm. The kind of calm that comes before a storm. "We're getting them back."

"It said come alone."

"I don't care what it said." He pulls me to my feet. "You're not facing that thing without me."

Kade bursts into the room. "Alpha! The demon took all fifteen children from the temple. Elder Moira is trying to hold it off but—"

An explosion rocks the fortress. We run to the window and see the Blood Moon Temple engulfed in black flames. Not regular fire—demonic fire that consumes light instead of creating it.

"No," I whisper.

Through the bond, I feel Dante's fury like a living thing. His eyes flash red, his hands shift into claws, his wolf is barely contained beneath his skin.

"Gather every warrior," he commands Kade. "Everyone who can fight. We attack in five minutes."

"The demon said come alone," I protest.

"The demon can go to hell. We're not playing by its rules." Dante grabs my face, forcing me to look at him. "We get our children back. Together. No sacrifices. No surrendering. We fight."

There's no time to argue. No time to plan. We have to move now before the demon hurts the children.

I shift into my white wolf for the first time in months. Dante's black wolf runs beside me. Behind us, two hundred warriors follow, ready for battle.

We race through the forest toward the temple. The darkness above spreads like an infection, swallowing the morning light. The temperature drops. My breath comes out in frozen clouds.

As we approach the temple, I see them. Seventeen children huddled in the center of the courtyard, surrounded by a cage made of shadow. Maya is holding Marcus, both of them crying. The other blood moon children cling to each other in terror.

And above them, the demon manifests fully.

It's massive, bigger than any building. A writhing mass of shadows and smoke with those terrible red eyes. Its form keeps shifting—sometimes vaguely humanoid, sometimes just pure darkness, sometimes showing faces of people it's consumed over the centuries.

Elder Moira stands between the demon and the children, her hands raised, maintaining a protective barrier. But I can see she's weakening. Blood drips from her nose. Her arms shake.

"Finally," the demon's voice booms, sounding like a thousand screams layered together. "The Luna Queen arrives. I was beginning to think you didn't care about your spawn."

I shift back to human form. Dante does the same. We stand before the demon, defiant.

"Let them go," I demand.

"Oh, I don't think so. These children are perfect vessels. So much power in such small bodies. I could possess them all and become a god."

"Touch them and I'll destroy you," Dante snarls.

The demon laughs, and the sound makes my bones ache. "You can't destroy me, Alpha King. You can barely hurt me. Five years ago, the Luna Queen caught me by surprise. But I've grown stronger. I've learned. And now nothing can stop me."

"I can," I say.

The demon's red eyes focus on me. "Yes. You're the strongest blood moon child alive. You would make an excellent vessel. I could rule this world in your body."

"Then take me. Leave the children and take me instead."

"NO!" Dante grabs my arm. "Aria, don't—"

"Let her speak," the demon purrs. "This is getting interesting."

I step away from Dante, ignoring his protests through the bond. "You want a blood moon child to possess? I'm offering myself. Willingly. Just let the children go first."

"Aria, please," Dante begs. "Don't do this."

I look at him, memorizing his face. Through the bond, I send every ounce of love I have. "I'm sorry. But they're our babies. I have to save them."

"We can find another way!"

"There is no other way." I turn back to the demon. "Do we have a deal?"

The demon considers. Its form ripples with excitement. "You would surrender yourself? Knowingly let me possess you?"

"Yes. But only after you release every child here. Send them back to the fortress safely. Then I'm yours."

"Aria, stop!" Elder Moira shouts. "If you let it possess you, it wins! It will use your power to enslave the entire werewolf world!"

"Better me than the children," I say calmly.

Dante tries to grab me, but I use my power to create a barrier between us. He slams against it, roaring my name.

"Interesting proposition," the demon says. "But I have a counter offer. You surrender yourself AND I keep one child. As insurance. To make sure you don't try anything clever."

My blood runs cold. "No. All the children go free."

"Then no deal. I'll just possess them all right now and kill you anyway." The demon's form moves toward the caged children.

"WAIT!" I'm desperate now. "Fine. Keep one child. But let me choose which one."

"Aria, don't you dare," Dante growls.

The demon considers. "Acceptable. Choose."

My heart shatters. How can I choose? How can I condemn one child to save the others?

I look at the caged children. Maya's silver eyes meet mine. She's only four years old, but she understands what's happening. She's terrified.

Marcus clings to his sister, too young to fully comprehend but crying because Maya is crying.

The other blood moon children watch me with hope and fear.

"I choose..." My voice breaks. "I choose myself AND one child. Maya. My daughter."

"NO!" Dante's scream is anguished. "Not our daughter!"

"She's the strongest of the children," I explain through my tears. "She has the best chance of surviving. And if I'm there, I can try to protect her from the inside."

It's the worst decision I've ever made. But it's the only one that saves the most lives.

The demon laughs with delight. "Oh, this is perfect. Mother and daughter, both vessels. Yes, I accept your terms."

The shadow cage dissolves. The children scatter, running toward our warriors who scoop them up and rush them to safety. Marcus is crying for Maya, reaching back toward his sister.

"Take care of your brother," Maya calls to him, her voice surprisingly steady. "Be brave!"

Then the cage reforms, smaller now. Trapping only Maya and me.

Dante shifts into his massive black wolf and charges the demon. But shadow tendrils swat him away like he's nothing. He crashes into the temple wall hard enough to crack stone.

"DANTE!" I scream.

He's not moving. Through the bond, I feel his pain, his consciousness fading.

Kade and the warriors attack together, but the demon is too strong. It throws them back easily, laughing at their efforts.

"Now then," the demon says, turning its full attention to Maya and me. "Let's begin."

Shadow pours into the cage. Maya screams and runs to me. I hold her tight, creating a protective barrier around us both. But I can feel the demon's presence pushing against my defenses, searching for a way in.

"Mama, I'm scared," Maya whimpers.

"I know, baby. I know." I kiss her head, tears streaming down my face. "Just remember, no matter what happens, Daddy and I love you so much."

"I don't want you to go away."

"I'm not going anywhere. We're together. Always."

The shadow breaks through my barrier. It wraps around us both, cold and suffocating. I feel it trying to invade my mind, my soul.

The demon's voice echoes inside my head: "Open yourself to me. Let me in. You promised."

I did promise. To save the children, I have to keep my word.

But before I can surrender, I feel something unexpected. Maya's small hand grips mine, and suddenly her power flares to life. Silver light erupts from her, mixing with my violet light.

"Together, Mama," she says, her four-year-old voice filled with unexpected strength. "We fight together."

"Maya, no—"

But she's already opening herself to the demon, just like I'm about to do. We're both vessels now, both targets.

And that's when I realize something. The demon can only fully possess one person at a time. By both offering ourselves, we've created a problem for it.

It has to choose.

The demon's presence splits, trying to invade both our minds simultaneously. But the effort divides its power. Maya and I grip each other tighter, our combined light pushing back against the darkness.

"You think you're clever?" the demon rages. "This changes nothing!"

But I can feel it struggling. Can feel its power weakening as it tries to possess two strong blood moon children at once.

"Elder Moira!" I scream. "The ritual! Do it now while it's distracted!"

Through the chaos, I see Elder Moira struggling to her feet. Blood covers her face, but her eyes are determined.

She begins chanting in the ancient language. The symbols on my skin and Maya's start to glow brilliantly.

The demon realizes what's happening and tries to pull back. But we don't let go. Maya and I hold onto its essence, trapping it between us.

"The vessel must die," Elder Moira chants. "To take the demon to true death."

We're both vessels now. Which means...

I look at my daughter's face. She looks back at me with Dante's silver eyes.

And I make my final choice.

I pull all the demon's essence into myself. Away from Maya. Into me alone.

"No!" the demon shrieks.

But it's too late. I've absorbed it completely. I can feel it inside me, raging and clawing, trying to take control.

"Mama?" Maya's voice sounds far away.

"Run, baby. Run to Daddy."

The shadow cage dissolves. Maya stumbles backward, free.

I see Dante struggling to his feet, blood streaming from a wound on his head. He sees Maya running toward him and catches her.

Then his eyes meet mine.

Through the bond, he feels everything. He knows what I've done.

"ARIA!" His scream echoes across the battlefield.

The demon writhes inside me, fighting for control. I can feel my body changing, shadows spreading across my skin.

Elder Moira finishes the ritual. "It is done. The vessel must now die."

I look at Dante one last time. At Maya in his arms. At Marcus being held by Kade.

"I love you," I mouth to them.

Then the ritual takes hold.

My body explodes with light and shadow, a final battle between the demon and my soul.

And everything goes dark.
