Chapter 38: The Choice

Isabella's POV

Damián walks to the window after telling Isabella she'll never leave his sight.

He stands there for a long time, staring out at San Isidro. At his territory. At the city he's built his empire in. Isabella watches him and can feel the fury radiating from him even from across the room.

His shoulders are rigid. His jaw is clenched. His entire body is a study in controlled rage.

"I should kill you," he says finally. His voice is ice. "You came into my home planning my destruction. You studied me like a case file. You wore my dead lover's face while you slept in my bed. You were a spy. A federal agent. An enemy."

Isabella doesn't move. Doesn't speak. Just waits for what comes next.

"You used me," Damián continues. His voice gets quieter, which somehow makes it more dangerous. "You used my love for Sofia against me. You used my grief. You used my vulnerability to get close enough to investigate me. You came here with every intention of proving I was guilty of murder."

He turns slowly to face Isabella.

"I should execute you right now," Damián says. "I should make you pay for every lie. For every moment you deceived me. For every night you slept beside me while planning my destruction."

Isabella's heart is pounding so hard she thinks it might explode. She's waiting for him to move toward her. Waiting for him to pull out the gun. Waiting for the moment he decides that her death is necessary.

But Damián just stands there, looking at her with eyes full of pain and rage and something else. Something that looks almost like love.

"But I can't," he says finally. His voice breaks slightly. "Because I love the woman you actually are, beneath the lies. I love Isabella Moreno. The DEA agent. The twin sister seeking justice. The woman who fell for me despite every reason not to."

He walks toward her slowly.

"And that," Damián continues, "might be the biggest mistake I ever make."

He reaches up and touches her face gently. His thumb traces her cheekbone. The tenderness of it contrasts sharply with the violence in his voice.

"I'm choosing you," Damián says. "I'm choosing to believe that your feelings are real. I'm choosing to love you despite the fact that you came here to destroy me. And if that choice costs me everything, then so be it."

Isabella's eyes burn with tears.

"Thank you," she whispers.

"Don't thank me yet," Damián says. "We still have Ghost to handle. We still have to deal with his betrayal. We still have to decide what happens next."

He releases her and pulls out his phone.

He dials Teo's number without looking away from Isabella.

When Teo answers, Damián says: "Bring Ghost to the containment room. We have things to discuss."

He hangs up and tucks the phone away.

"Ghost will be here in ten minutes," Damián says. "And when he arrives, you're going to help me understand exactly what he's planning. You're going to tell me everything he said to you. Every threat. Every deal. Every detail."

"Okay," Isabella says.

They walk downstairs together. Damián's hand rests on the small of her back, possessive and warm. The gesture says to anyone watching that Isabella belongs to him. That she's his to protect.

They arrive at the containment room just as Teo is bringing Ghost in.

Ghost looks confused. He's still wearing the clothes from this morning. His hair is disheveled. His expression is uncertain, which is the first time Isabella has ever seen him look anything other than completely in control.

"Boss," Ghost says when he sees Damián. He doesn't acknowledge Isabella. "What's going on? Teo said you needed to see me urgently."

"Did he?" Damián asks. He sits in a chair facing Ghost. Isabella stands beside him. "I wonder why that would be."

Ghost's eyes narrow. He's starting to understand that something is wrong.

"I know about Victoria Lucci," Damián says calmly. "I know about the merger you've been planning. I know about the communications you've been having with her for two years. I know about the betrayal you've been cultivating."

Ghost's face goes pale.

"And most importantly," Damián continues, "I know that you killed Sofia."

The words hang in the air like a physical thing.

Ghost looks at Isabella. Really looks at her. And understanding dawns across his face.

"You told him," Ghost says. His voice is filled with something that sounds almost like admiration. "After I gave you an out, you told him everything."

"I did," Isabella confirms.

Ghost laughs. It's a bitter sound.

"You foolish woman," he says. "You had a way out. You had freedom. And you threw it away for love."

"Yes," Isabella says. "I did."

Damián stands and walks closer to Ghost.

"Tell me everything," Damián commands. "Tell me about Victoria. Tell me about the plan to take over my organization. Tell me about Sofia. Tell me why you decided to betray me."

Ghost's jaw tightens. For a moment, Isabella thinks he's going to stay silent. Thinks he's going to refuse to cooperate.

But then Ghost starts talking.

"Sofia was a problem," he says. His voice is flat. Emotionless. "She saw me meeting with Lucci representatives. She recognized me from cartel files. She was going to tell you."

"So you killed her," Damián says.

"I did what was necessary," Ghost responds. "I eliminated a threat. I protected the organization."

Damián's hand clenches into a fist, but he doesn't move.

"Victoria approached me three years ago," Ghost continues. "She offered me something you never could. Power. Not as a second-in-command. As a leader. As someone who could actually run the organization efficiently instead of being blinded by emotion."

He looks directly at Damián.

"You became weak," Ghost says. "When Sofia came into your life, when you started caring about someone other than your empire, you became vulnerable. You became human. And humans make mistakes."

Damián's expression doesn't change.

"The plan was simple," Ghost says. "I would consolidate power with Victoria. We would merge the organizations. You would either accept the new structure or you would be removed. The cartel would be stronger. More profitable. More ruthless."

"And Sofia?" Damián asks, his voice dropping into something dangerous. "Was killing her part of the plan?"

"Sofia was collateral damage," Ghost says without inflection. "She was a problem that needed solving. Nothing more."

Damián moves so fast that Isabella doesn't see it coming. He grabs Ghost by the throat and slams him against the wall. Ghost's eyes go wide with shock.

"She was the only good thing in my life," Damián says. His voice is barely a whisper. "And you took her from me because she was inconvenient."

He releases Ghost, who gasps for air.

"You're going to tell me everything," Damián continues. "Every detail. Every person involved. Every location. Every asset. You're going to give me your complete cooperation, or I'm going to make your death as painful as possible."

Ghost coughs and nods.

Over the next two hours, Ghost confesses everything. He details his communications with Victoria Lucci. He explains the merger plan. He gives names of lieutenants involved in the conspiracy. He provides locations of safe houses and supply routes.

By the time he's finished, the entire scope of his betrayal is clear.

Ghost has been planning this for two years. He's positioned himself perfectly. He's had time to move assets, to build alliances, to prepare for the moment he would strike.

And he's been waiting for the right moment. Waiting for Damián to become distracted enough that he wouldn't notice the movement against him.

That moment came when Isabella arrived.

When Damián finishes listening to Ghost's confession, he stands.

"You're going to stay in this room," Damián says coldly. "And tomorrow, you're going to tell my organization what you've done. You're going to confess your betrayal in front of every lieutenant. Every soldier. Every person who trusted you."

"And then?" Ghost asks. His voice is hoarse from Damián's attack.

"And then," Damián says, "I'm going to execute you personally. But first, you're going to watch me dismantle everything you've built with Victoria Lucci. You're going to understand the cost of betrayal."

Damián turns and leaves the containment room. Isabella follows him.

As they walk through the estate, Isabella sees Teo appearing in doorways. Sees messages being sent. Sees the organization mobilizing in response to Ghost's confession.

Damián is going to war.
