Chapter 46: The Teeth Of Power

I didn’t sleep long.

Maybe an hour or Maybe two. The sanctum stayed dim, lit only by the silvery glow of the barrier wards. The others remained exactly where they’d settled, coiled, tense, too alert to rest fully.

Silas sat like a carved statue, blade across his knees. Ashen’s shadows curled outward and then inward in slow, controlled pulses, keeping the chamber wrapped in protective darkness. Riven was still sprawled near the door, but his eyes were open, gleaming faint gold in the low light. Kyren didn’t sleep at all. His wings had folded around me while I slept, warm and sheltering, like a protective cocoon.

The moment my breathing shifted, they all snapped to attention.

Riven was the first to speak. “Tell me you slept.”

His tone said he already knew I barely had.

“I tried,” I said, sitting up.

Kyren’s eyes were soft and tired in a way that made my chest ache. “Did the voice return?”

“No.” I exhaled. “Not after earlier. You pushed it back.”

Ashen’s head tilted, shadows flickering across his cheekbones. “We anchored you. But you must learn to anchor yourself.”

Silas rose gracefully, sheathing his blade. “Then we begin today.”

I blinked. “Begin what?”

Riven grinned like someone had just told him we were going to hunt gods. “Training.”

Kyren shook his head. “Training is too soft a word. This is survival.”

Ashen stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear, an unexpectedly gentle gesture. “And you will not face the next attack without control.”

I swallowed. “Then let’s start.”

Silas nodded once. “Outside. The training grounds are empty at this hour.”

Riven cracked his knuckles. “Good. I hate an audience.”

\------------------------------------------------------

( THE TRAINING GROUNDS )

The air outside the sanctum was colder, the sky still trapped between night and dawn. The grounds were lit by a few scattered lanterns, most flickering from the aftershocks of last night’s breach.

Kyren took the lead. “We’re focusing on three things, defense, control, and resistance.”

“Resistance,” Silas clarified, “means rejecting external magical influence.”

“And defense,” Riven added, “means no more almost getting skewered by shadow blades. Preferably.”

Ashen’s shadows circled me like curious serpents. “As for control and your magic is waking faster than expected. You must learn its boundaries.”

“I don’t think it has boundaries,” I murmured.

“Then,” Kyren said softly, “we’ll make some.”

\-------------------------------------------------------

( PART I: DEFENSE )

Silas moved first.

He drew a shallow circle in the dirt with the tip of his blade. “Stand in the center.”

I did.

“You will not leave this circle,” he said. “Not for anything.”

“But....”

“No matter what I do, no matter what you feel, you stay within these lines.”

Riven smirked. “This’ll be fun.”

Kyren shot him a glare. “Riven.”

“What? She needs pressure.”

Silas raised his free hand. “Focus on instinct, Elara. The magic will follow.”

The air shifted. A whisper of movement. Then...

Silas was gone.

Not disappeared or just impossibly fast. One second he stood before me, the next he was a blur of violet flame streaking toward my left side.

I gasped and threw up a wall of shadow without thinking.

The blade hit it.

The shock vibrated down my spine.

Silas landed lightly, eyebrows lifting in approval. “Good.”

Then he attacked again.

And again.

And again.

My shadows responded each time and sometimes as walls, sometimes as tendrils that whipped out to block or redirect the strikes. But the speed… gods, the speed. It took everything in me not to flinch or run.

Silas stopped after what felt like forever. “She learns quickly.”

Riven nudged him. “My turn.”

Before anyone could argue, he launched himself at me with a growl and not with claws, but with sheer velocity that no human could match.

This time I didn’t raise a shield.

I dodged.

Barely.

Riven slid to a halt, grinning. “Aha. Instinct.”

Ashen stepped forward, shadows hissing. “Enough. She is exhausted.”

I shook my head. “I’m fine.”

Kyren moved to stand beside me. “If you push too fast..”

“I said I’m fine.”

My voice cracked, betraying me.

Riven frowned. “You’re shaking.”

“What I’m shaking from is fear,” I said, meeting his eyes. “And I don’t plan on staying afraid.”

Silas sheathed his blade again. “Then we continue.”

\-----------------------------------------------------

( PART II: CONTROL )

Ashen took over.

His shadows pooled around us, dampening sound, turning the world dim and close.

“Your magic responds to emotion,” he said. “But that is a double-edged blade. You must learn to summon without fear, repel without rage, rise without crisis.”

“How do you do that?” I whispered.

Ashen reached out and placed his hand over my heart. The touch was light, but the effect was overwhelming. Shadows rippled beneath my skin, answering him.

“Feel,” he murmured. “Nothing more.”

The world shifted.

I felt the shadows. Deep, infinite, alive. And beneath them with another pulse. Light. Warm. Kyren’s magic, prickling at the edge of mine like sunlight on water. And there, beneath both a slow, fierce rumble.

Riven.

All around me. Within me.

Silas’s voice anchored the whirlwind. “Let it move through you. Not against you.”

I exhaled...

And my power settled.

Balanced.

For a moment, everything aligned.

Ashen withdrew his hand, watching me like he was seeing something new, and terrifying.

“That,” he whispered, “is what they want.”

Kyren stepped in, worry sharpening into something harder. “Which is exactly why she needs resistance training.”

Silas nodded. “Agreed.”

Riven cracked his neck. “Then let’s break whatever mental door those bastards were knocking on.”

\---------------------------------------------------

( PART III: RESISTANCE )

Kyren approached with a gentleness that contradicted the grim determination in his eyes.

“This part isn’t physical,” he said. “It’s internal.”

He touched his forehead lightly to mine. A soft pulse of light spread through me, warm and painfully tender.

“Let me in.”

My breath caught. “Kyren...”

“It’s safe,” he whispered. “I swear by my wings.”

I inhaled, opened the bond...

And the world flooded.

Warmth. Light. Grief. Fear. Love. All tangled in a dizzying, luminous wash. Kyren’s emotions, his memories, his instincts. His voice inside me, not speaking, but existing.

This is how they’ll try to take you, he murmured in my mind. By forcing their will into yours. By pushing until you break.

I trembled. “So what do I do?”

Push back.

His magic pressed against mine and not painfully, but insistently. A test. A mimic of the force that had whispered “join us.”

I braced...

And pushed.

Not with anger.

Not with fear.

With self.

The light around us cracked, then steadied. Kyren stepped back, breathing hard but smiling and really smiling, for the first time since the attack.

“You did it.”

Riven barked a laugh. “Of course she did.”

Ashen’s shadows stroked my shoulder. “Again.”

Silas crossed his arms. “Stronger this time.”

I groaned. “You’re all relentless.”

Riven winked. “You picked us.”

I didn’t argue.

Because training continued. Harder. Deeper. Until my body trembled and my magic thrummed like a struck chord. Until the sky lightened with dawn, bleeding pale gold over the horizon.

By the time we stopped, sweat plastered my hair to my neck and my lungs burned.

But...

The voice was silent.

I couldn’t feel it at all.

For the first time since the breach, hope flickered in my chest.

Kyren brushed my cheek with the back of his hand. “You’re stronger than you know.”

Ashen added softly, “And more dangerous than they ever anticipated.”

Silas nodded. “We still have work to do.”

Riven grinned. “But if they come again? Good. Let them.”

I straightened, exhausted but resolute.

“Let them try.”

Because for the first time..

I wasn’t afraid.
