Chapter 127

I tried to visualize the scene, to create a mental map of the lab, to guide them. But the images were fragmented, distorted, like a broken mirror. I could only grasp at fleeting details: a fallen console, a shattered beaker, a tangle of wires. The chip was small, easily overlooked.

Then, a new voice, unfamiliar, but authoritative, broke through the fog. “…satellite imagery… enhanced scans… potential heat signature…” The words sparked a flicker of hope. They were using my resources, Ruddy and Zach, to find it.

I clung to that hope, that fragile thread of connection to the outside world. I had to get better. I had to help them. I had to stop Thorne, even from beyond the grave.

The pain returned, a searing fire in my brain, pulling me back down into the darkness. But even as I fell, I held onto the image of the data chip, a tiny, metallic key to unlocking Thorne’s final plan. It was out there. And I knew Kenzie would find it. She always did.

The search for the data chip was a race against time. The tactical unit, under Senator Hayes's direction, meticulously combed through the ruined lab in Greendale, but the initial sweep yielded nothing. My gut churned with a cold dread. Thorne wouldn't make it easy.

"They've gone through every inch of the lab, Dr. Peirce," the Senator reported, his voice grim. "No sign of any data chip. We're using metal detectors, chemical sensors, everything. It's like it vanished."

"It's there, Senator," I insisted, my voice tight. "Darius saw it. He wouldn't imagine something like that. It's small, easily overlooked. We need to think like Thorne. Where would he hide it? What would he use to conceal it?"

Zara, ever resourceful, suggested a new approach. "We need to analyze the lab's schematics, if there are any. Thorne is a meticulous planner. He would have incorporated hiding places into the very structure of the facility."

Ruddy and Zach, working remotely, managed to recover fragmented blueprints of the lab's construction. They revealed hidden compartments, false walls, and even a complex ventilation system that could have been used to conceal something small.

"We need to focus on these areas," I told the Senator, highlighting the potential hiding places on the digital schematics. "Especially the ventilation system. Thorne could have used the air ducts to transport the chip to a remote location within the lab."

The tactical unit, armed with the new intel, resumed their search, this time focusing on the hidden compartments and the ventilation system. They used miniature cameras to explore the air ducts, their every move broadcast back to Ardwell.

As the search continued, my focus shifted back to Darius. His condition remained critical, but stable. The therapeutic hypothermia had slowed the neurological damage, but the long-term effects were still unknown. His brain activity was minimal, but there were occasional flickers of response.

"He squeezed my hand," a nurse reported one evening, her voice hushed with awe. "Just slightly, but he definitely responded to my voice."

The news, though small, was a beacon of hope. Darius was still there, fighting, even in the depths of his coma. I sat by his bedside, holding his hand, willing him to come back to me.

"We're going to find it, Darius," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "We're going to find his final plan, and we're going to stop him. Just hold on. Come back to us."

Then, a breakthrough. "Mrs. C , Senator," Ruddy's voice crackled over the comms, his tone excited. "We found something. In the main ventilation duct, near the control console. It's small, metallic. Looks like a data chip."

A wave of relief washed over me, so intense it almost buckled my knees. They had found it. Darius had been right.

"Get it secured immediately," I told the Senator, my voice firm. "And send it back to Ardwell. We need to analyze it. Now."

Darius

The fog was lifting, slowly, painfully. The world was still blurry, distorted, but the darkness was receding. I could hear voices more clearly now, feel the gentle pressure of Kenzie's hand on mine.

The memory of the data chip, still vivid in my mind, gave me a sense of purpose, a reason to fight my way back to consciousness. I had to know. Had they found it? What did it contain?

I tried to move, to speak, but my body was still weak, unresponsive. My thoughts, though clearer, were trapped within my skull, unable to find expression.

Then, I heard Kenzie's voice, close to my ear, her tone a mixture of relief and urgency. "They found it, Darius. They found the chip. Ruddy and Zach are analyzing it now."

A wave of relief washed over me, a physical sensation that eased the pain in my head. They had found it. My warning had been heeded. Thorne’s final plan was within our grasp.

I tried to open my eyes, to see Kenzie, but my eyelids felt like lead weights. I could only manage a weak twitch of my fingers, a small acknowledgment.

"He's responding, Zara!" Kenzie exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. "He knows! He understands!"

I could feel Zara’s presence beside me, her touch gentle on my forehead. "His brain activity is increasing, Kenzie. The edema is still significant, but he's fighting. He's coming back to us."

The news of the chip seemed to energize me, to give my body a reason to heal. The pain was still there, a dull ache, but it was overshadowed by a growing sense of purpose. I had to be there, to help them decipher Thorne’s final plan.

I focused all my remaining strength, trying to form a coherent thought, to ask a question. What… does… it… say? The words formed in my mind, but wouldn't translate into sound.

"What does it say?" Kenzie repeated, her voice soft, her hand squeezing mine. "What's on the chip, Darius?"

I tried again, forcing air from my lungs, but only a garbled sound escaped. My frustration grew, a silent scream trapped within my weakened body.

Then, a new voice, Ruddy’s, clear and urgent, cut through the fog. "Mrs. C, Senator, we've cracked the encryption. It's a series of coordinates… and a countdown timer."

A chill ran through me, despite the warmth of the hospital bed. Coordinates. A countdown timer. Thorne’s final plan was unfolding, and it was even more terrifying than I had imagined.

Ruddy’s words sent a jolt of adrenaline through me, overriding the exhaustion and the lingering fear. "Coordinates… and a countdown timer." Thorne’s final plan. It was unfolding, even with him in custody.

"Coordinates to what?" I demanded, my voice sharp, my mind racing. "Where are they pointing?"

"Multiple locations, Mrs. C" Ruddy replied, his voice strained. "Major metropolitan areas around the globe. And the countdown… it's already running. Less than 24 hours."

Global targets. Thorne was planning a coordinated, widespread attack. The scale of his ambition was terrifying.

"What's the payload?" I asked, my heart pounding. "Is it another bio-agent? A virus? What is he planning to unleash?"

"We're still analyzing the data, Mrs. C," Zach interjected, his voice grim.
