Chapter 195: Did You and Alexander Get Back Together?
Alexander bit his lip and said softly, "What did he want from you? You're going to see him again? Do you know he's about to marry someone else?"
Madison nodded. "I know."
"You know?"
Madison turned to look at him, her voice calm. "I know. But this talk is necessary. We need to end things between us."
Alexander's furrowed brows relaxed a bit. He stared straight ahead, sounding a little annoyed. "You talk like there's something between you two."
Nathan had taken Madison from him for years without any result, and he wasn't scared at all.
He just didn't want Madison to meet him alone.
Thinking of that, he turned to Madison. "Let me go with you!"
Of course, Madison wouldn't agree.
The next day, she went to meet Nathan alone. They had agreed to meet at the coffee shop downstairs from the company.
Madison arrived a bit early. Nathan must have rushed down after a meeting.
He looked thinner after just a few days apart. His handsome face was full of coldness, nothing like the smiling, gentle Nathan from before.
He sat across from Madison, still smiling, and apologized, "Sorry I'm late."
Madison stirred her coffee and said flatly, "It's fine, I didn't get here much earlier either."
Seeing the woman's still gentle smile, as if nothing had changed, Nathan's eyes darkened.
"You and Alexander got back together?"
He asked so quietly, like he wasn't really looking for an answer, just talking to the air.
Or maybe he didn't want an answer at all.
Madison shook her head. "No."
Nathan's eyes lit up a little, but Madison's next words wiped out any hope.
"Even if it's not Alexander, it can't be you, Nathan. You know, it's not just about liking or loving each other. There's your family too."
The head of Cross Group could never marry a useless wife just for show.
Even if Nathan was willing, the old ancestor at home would never agree.
Hearing her call him "Nathan" again, Nathan's smile turned bitter. His blue eyes curved slightly, his voice hoarse. "Yeah, I've struggled for so long, but I still can't protect you."
At that thought, he clenched his fists, a wave of unwillingness rising in his chest.
After struggling for years, he had lost to his complicated family.
If he could take control, if he could decide for himself, he wouldn't need a marriage alliance and could marry the person he wanted.
Right then, he felt so jealous of Alexander.
Jealous of his family, jealous that his family always put him first, jealous that Madison still hadn't forgotten him.
But when the jealousy peaked, Nathan calmed down instead.
He took a deep breath and asked, "Will you get together with him?"
This question was sharper than before. He stared hard at Madison's eyes, wanting an answer.
Madison shook her head again. She wasn't avoiding it on purpose; she really didn't know.
Maybe she hadn't figured it out herself, so she couldn't give a definite answer.
Not getting a no, Nathan understood: that meant she was moved.
In the end, the problem between them was never all that messy stuff. As long as they still loved each other.
"If you really end up with him one day, don't tell me."
It would be too cruel for him.
He didn't know if he'd think about this girl for the rest of his life, but he definitely couldn't hear news of her getting back with Alexander.
So this was goodbye.
Madison nodded. "I've already handed in my resignation to the company."
Nathan knew about it, but had been holding off on approving it.
But after today, he thought he'd give that resignation letter a yes.
He stood up and straightened his slightly messy suit. "Madison, goodbye."
He started walking away. Madison stood up too, watching his back as he left, and said softly, "Nathan, I hope you can be happy."
She meant it.
All these years, he'd been by her side. Even with everything that happened between them, she still hoped he could be happy.
Nathan's steps paused for a second, then he walked away quickly.
Madison didn't feel sad exactly, but her feelings were still complicated.
When she came out of the cafe, she was still a bit out of it.
Seeing the pouring rain outside, she didn't react and just walked straight into it.
Suddenly, a hand grabbed her waist. A man's annoyed voice had a hint of helplessness. "What are you thinking about so hard?"
Her back hit the man's hard chest, and Madison came back to her senses.
She turned and saw the cold-faced man standing behind her. "What are you doing here?"
The question felt unnecessary even as she asked it.
How could this guy let her meet Nathan alone? He probably followed her secretly.
Thinking that, she smiled a little.
Alexander saw her smile after being scolded and got unhappy right away. "What, laughing at me for following you like a dog?"
Madison nodded without hiding it. "Yeah, laughing at you. So what?"
Alexander felt speechless at her bold reply. He pressed his lips together. "I can't do anything to you. Who told me to like you?"
Madison didn't buy his sweet talk. She stepped back and pushed him away. "You never had the right to do anything to me anyway. It has nothing to do with whether you like me or not. Mr. Frost, don't forget, we don't have any relationship right now."
Seeing her looking mischievous, Alexander felt a pang in his chest and suddenly had a bad idea. He leaned closer to Madison. "Yeah, we have no relationship, except for the two kids we had together."
Madison froze, then heard him ask through gritted teeth, "When are you going to tell the two kids? You can't keep them from knowing me for the rest of their lives, right?"
The rest of their lives?
Of course it wasn't that serious, but she really hadn't figured out how to tell the two kids yet.
She hesitated for a moment. "How about you tell them yourself?"
Alexander paused, touching his nose. "You're their mom. It's better if you say it."
Madison could tell he was chickening out and snorted. "You're their dad too. Why don't you say it? Making me be the bad guy for this."
Alexander coughed lightly and opened the umbrella. "Forget it, no rush on that. Let me take you home first. Hungry? I'll cook for you when we get back."
Lately, Alexander had been trying to act like a good wife and mom.
Every day besides cooking for her when he got home, he made fancy cakes for the two kids in different ways, spoiling their tastes.
Of course, before Alexander started making these things, he never knew he had this kind of talent.
