Chapter 181: Do You Want to Cooperate?
Alexander saw right through her worry and squeezed her hand back, his voice firm. "Don't worry. This time, I'm not letting him get away no matter what." Madison nodded, but she still felt uneasy.
Seeing how scared she was, Alexander lowered his voice. "The kids shouldn't go to kindergarten for now. I'll call the teacher and get someone to watch them. Same goes for you."
"Okay."
Madison wasn't scared of dying, but the guy was out for blood. She couldn't count on Alexander showing up in time to save her again.
"Maybe we should start from my side and figure out who wants me dead so badly."
She had a suspect in mind, but without proof she couldn't just accuse someone. Besides, the guy was about to leave the country, so he probably wouldn't pull something like this. He wouldn't hate the kids that much either.
Madison was still thinking when her phone suddenly rang.
She looked down and saw Nathan's name on the screen. Without thinking, she glanced at Alexander.
Alexander saw it too but didn't say anything. He just turned his head slightly.
After what happened in the parking garage, Nathan was bound to find out. Madison thought for a second, then stood up and stepped outside to answer.
"I've landed. I'm at the airport. Where are you, the hospital?"
Nathan spoke fast, clearly worried.
Madison explained, "Didn't the report make it clear? I'm not hurt. It's Alexander. He saved me."
"...As long as you're okay. Since Alexander's the one in the hospital, I won't come over. I'll give you time off. Rest up. I'll find out who had the nerve to attack someone at Cross Group."
Madison could hear the anger in his voice and guessed what he was thinking. She quickly said, "It's probably not Michael. I saw the guy's face. It's the same man who kidnapped the kids last time. He's here for revenge."
Nathan answered calmly, "I'll check if it's him myself. Don't worry, I'll find out who's behind this."
He was in a rush, so he hung up right after.
A little later, Alexander's phone lit up in the hospital room.
He picked it up and saw a message from Nathan.
[Want to work together? For Madison's safety.]
For Madison's safety, they set their differences aside for now.
[Fine.]
Over the next few days, Madison stayed at the hospital to take care of Alexander instead of going to work.
With Nathan's help, the two sides worked together. Alexander followed the leads and quickly found some clues.
Looking at the photo of the man, Alexander's eyes turned ice cold.
He looked up at his assistant. "He got away?"
The assistant lowered his head a little. "The plan was solid, but he changed routes like someone tipped him off. He knew we were coming, so he ran."
Alexander tossed the file onto his lap without any expression. "Once he leaves the country, it'll be hard to find him. If there's a traitor on the team, get rid of them fast. Go bring Savannah here."
The assistant nodded, then hesitated. "We don't have direct proof that George was working for someone. Even if we bring Savannah in, she probably won't admit anything."
Alexander frowned. "Got a better idea?"
The assistant shook his head. If he did, he wouldn't be standing here waiting to get yelled at. "I'll go right now."
He quickly packed up and left. As soon as he opened the door, he saw Madison standing outside.
She was holding a thermos, unsure how long she'd been there. From the look on her face, she'd heard everything.
"Mrs. Frost."
The assistant spoke quietly and glanced back at Alexander.
Alexander waved him off, telling him to go.
Madison came in, closed the door, set the thermos down, and walked to the bed. She stared straight at Alexander. "The kidnapping and the car accident have something to do with Savannah?"
Alexander shook his head. "No direct proof, but George has no other reason except Savannah."
Madison thought for a moment, then nodded. "When you question her, I want to be there."
Meanwhile.
[I've already safely left the country. Be careful.]
Savannah read the message and let out a long breath.
Good that he got away. As long as Alexander didn't catch him, it was lucky.
Still, she felt uneasy. If Alexander could trace it to George, he'd suspect her soon enough.
How should she handle it? Pretend she knew nothing or just deny everything?
Alexander might suspect her, but he had no proof. As long as she stuck to her story, he wouldn't come after her—not after she once saved his life.
Savannah was still thinking when someone knocked on the door.
She jumped and went to check the peephole. She saw a familiar face outside.
Her heart started pounding.
She clenched her teeth, forced herself to act normal, and opened the door. "What are you doing here?"
The assistant smiled politely. "Miss Wells, Mr. Frost wants to see you."
Savannah's hands tightened into fists under her sleeves. She pretended to look happy. "Is something wrong? Alexander never reaches out first."
The assistant kept smiling. "You'll see when you get there."
By the time Savannah arrived at the hospital, it was already afternoon.
The sky was dark with heavy clouds, like a storm was coming.
As soon as she walked into the room, she saw the man with gauze wrapped around his head.
She gasped and rushed over. "Alexander, where are you hurt? Who did this to you?"
Alexander looked at her flawless face and narrowed his eyes. "You don't know?"
Savannah frowned, confused. "Know what?"
Was she just that good at acting, or did she really not know?
Alexander spoke in a low voice. "The guy who did this to me is George."
"Him? Why would he hurt you?"
"That's what I should ask you," Madison said coldly. "Why would he try to kill me? I have no grudge against him. The only reason is you."
Faced with their suspicious looks, Savannah looked shocked for a second, then shook her head nervously. "I don't know anything. I haven't talked to George in years. There must be some misunderstanding."
