Chapter 52: Aggressive Kiss
Seraphine's POV
He froze.
Completely still. Like someone had hit pause on him mid-breath.
His eyes locked onto the exposed skin of my neck. The pupils contracted, then dilated. Gold began bleeding into the black again, creeping along the edges like liquid fire.
I felt the shift through the bond before I saw it. Shock slammed into me first, raw and sudden. Then suspicion, still there, still coiled tight. But underneath it all was something else. Something darker.
Desire.
His throat moved as he swallowed. Once. Twice. The muscle in his jaw twitched.
But he didn't move closer.
He stayed exactly where he was, three feet away, hands still holding that damn dagger. The gold in his eyes pulsed brighter, then dimmed, then flared again. Like he was fighting something.
Fighting himself.
I watched him struggle. Watched the war playing out behind those dual pupils.
And something twisted in my chest. Not sympathy. Not fear.
Satisfaction.
Because for the first time since I'd woken up in this cabin, since he'd thrown me against walls and choked me and looked at me like I was dirt under his boot, I had the upper hand.
He wanted this. Wanted to mark me. I could feel it burning through the bond, could see it in the way his fingers tightened around the dagger handle.
But he was holding back.
The mighty Alpha. The wolf who'd threatened to kill me slowly just minutes ago. Standing there like a statue because I'd offered him something he couldn't resist.
I tilted my head a fraction more. Let my hair fall further away from my throat.
His pupils blew wide. The gold swallowed the black completely.
Got you.
The thought slid through my mind, cold and sharp. This wasn't about trust. Wasn't about proving loyalty or keeping promises.
This was a transaction. I needed his help finding Lyralei. He needed proof I wouldn't run.
But right now? Right now he was the one who couldn't move. The one who was trapped. And I was the one calling the shots.
Payback for every bruise. Every threat. Every goddamn second he'd made me feel small.
I stepped forward.
His breathing hitched. The bond flared hot enough to make my skin prickle.
Another step. Close enough now that I could feel the heat radiating off him. Close enough to see the way his chest rose and fell, faster than before.
I raised my hand. Pressed my palm flat against his chest.
His heart was pounding. I could feel it through the fabric of his shirt, wild and erratic.
One more move. Just one more.
I pushed up onto my toes.
And kissed him.
It wasn't soft. Wasn't tentative. I pressed my mouth against his hard, claiming, like I was staking a goddamn flag. My fingers curled into his shirt, pulling him down toward me.
He went rigid. Every muscle in his body locked up.
For half a second, I thought he'd push me away. Thought he'd snap out of whatever trance he was in and throw me across the room again.
Then the bond exploded.
Heat. Hunger. Need. It crashed into me like a tidal wave, knocking the breath out of my lungs. His arm came around my waist, yanking me against him so hard I gasped.
The dagger clattered to the floor.
He kissed me back. Not gentle. Not controlled. His mouth was brutal, demanding, like he was trying to devour me whole. His hand fisted in my hair, tilting my head back so he could kiss me deeper.
The world narrowed. Shrank down to nothing but his mouth on mine and the bond screaming between us.
We moved. I didn't know who started it, didn't care. My back hit something solid and I heard a loud thump as we collided with the desk. The whole thing shook under the impact. Something clattered, papers rustled.
Neither of us stopped.
His other hand slid to my hip, fingers digging in hard enough to bruise. I didn't give a shit. I pulled him closer, nails scraping against his scalp.
The shirt I'd been wearing earlier, the one I'd draped over the desk, slipped off the edge. It fell halfway to the floor, dangling precariously. The corner of the brown book peeked out from underneath the fabric, more visible than before.
We didn't notice.
His mouth left mine, trailing down my jaw. Hot. Wet. Every touch sent sparks racing down my spine.
Lower.
His teeth grazed the side of my neck. Right over the faint mark from before.
I sucked in a sharp breath. My fingers tightened in his hair.
He paused. Just for a heartbeat. I felt the question in the bond, felt him waiting for permission even as every cell in his body screamed at him to take what he wanted.
I didn't say anything. Didn't need to.
I tilted my head further. Offering.
The low sound that rumbled out of his chest wasn't human. Purely wolf. Purely Alpha.
Then he bit down.
Pain exploded through my neck, sharp and burning. I cried out, the sound caught somewhere between a gasp and a scream. My body tried to jerk away on instinct, but his arm locked around me, holding me in place.
The bond went white-hot. Pleasure crashed into the pain, twisting together until I couldn't tell where one ended and the other began. It flooded through every nerve, every cell, until my legs nearly gave out beneath me.
His teeth sank deeper. Claiming. Marking. Branding me as his.
I felt something shift in the bond. Something fundamental. The connection that had been a thin thread before suddenly snapped taut, pulling tight between us like a steel cable. Unbreakable.
Permanent.
My vision blurred at the edges. Every breath came hard and fast. The pain was still there, sharp and immediate, but underneath it was something else. Something that made heat pool low in my stomach.
His hand slid up my side, rough and possessive. His other arm kept me pinned against him, like he was afraid I'd slip away if he let go.
The mark burned. Throbbed. Each pulse sent another wave of sensation through me, mixing with the rush from the bond until I couldn't think straight.
Fuck.
His mouth moved lower, teeth scraping over sensitive skin. My head fell back against the desk, a broken sound escaping my throat.
This was supposed to be a transaction. Business. Nothing more.
But right now, it didn't feel like business.
Right now, it felt like I was being consumed.
"Kaelen, Dinner's ready. Everyone's waiting for you, Ka—"
