Chapter 26: Caged
Seraphine's POV
Something in his tone made me stop. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
I looked back over my shoulder.
Kaelen's expression had changed. Gone was the careful neutrality. In its place—
Ice.
Pure, arctic cold.
"I asked you a question." Each word was precisely enunciated. Dangerous. "Where. Do you think. You're going."
"To find my sister myself." I lifted my chin, meeting that freezing stare. "Since you're clearly too busy with—" My gaze flicked to Vespera. "—other priorities."
"No."
One syllable.
The air around us shifted.
Alpha dominance crashed down like a physical weight. Pressure building, crushing, making it hard to breathe. The trees seemed to lean in. The ground felt unstable beneath my feet.
Every wolf instinct I had screamed at me to submit. To drop my eyes. To bare my throat.
Don't. Don't you fucking dare.
I locked my knees to keep from collapsing. Forced myself to keep standing. Keep looking at him even as his power tried to drive me down.
"You don't tell me what to do," I ground out through clenched teeth.
Kaelen took a step forward. Then another. Closing the distance between us with predatory grace.
"In my territory, I tell everyone what to do." His voice was soft now. Deadly soft. "Especially wolves under my protection who seem to have forgotten their place."
"Protection?" I barked a laugh that hurt my chest. "Is that what you call this?"
"Yes." He was close now. Too close. "Protection you clearly don't appreciate. Protection you're actively throwing away."
The Alpha pressure intensified. I felt my legs start to shake. Felt my wolf torn between the instinct to submit and the rage keeping me standing.
Hold it. Just a little longer.
"Then I guess the deal is off." I forced the words out. "I'll leave. Go find Lyralei on my own. You can go back to—" I couldn't say it. Couldn't force the words past my throat. "—whatever this is."
For a moment, something blazed in his eyes. Something that made the bond between us flare with heat so intense it burned.
Then it was gone. Replaced by that arctic cold.
"You think you can just leave?" He tilted his head slightly. "You think a deal with an Alpha is something you can walk away from whenever you feel like it?"
"Watch me."
His laugh was soft. Humorless.
"No."
The single word hit like a physical blow.
"This is my territory." Each word was measured. Final. "These are my lands. And until I say otherwise—" His eyes bored into mine. "—you belong to me."
What?
"Belong—" I started.
"Every wolf in Shadowmere Pack belongs to me. As Alpha. As leader." He leaned in slightly. "That includes you. Bond or no bond. Deal or no deal."
"That's not—"
"You want to leave?" He straightened, somehow making the movement seem threatening. "Fine. You can try. But understand something first."
The Alpha presence around him intensified until the air felt thick with it.
"Leaving my territory without permission is abandonment. Betrayal." His voice dropped even lower. "And I don't tolerate betrayal."
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Through the bond, I felt the truth of his words. The absolute certainty. The promise of consequences I couldn't begin to imagine.
He means it. Every word.
"You can't—" My voice came out weaker than I wanted. "You can't just keep me here."
"Can't I?" He stepped back, and somehow that was worse than him being close. "You made a deal, Seraphine. Bonds like that don't break because you're angry. They don't end because you feel like it."
He turned away then. Dismissed me like I was nothing.
His hand reached out—and closed around Vespera's.
I watched his fingers interlock with hers. Watched him pull her close to his side with casual ease.
"Think about what you really want," he said, still not looking at me. "And what you're willing to sacrifice to get it."
They walked away together.
Vespera glanced back once, her smile triumphant. Victorious.
See? He chose me. Not you.
I stood there, frozen, as they disappeared into the trees.
Through the bond, I felt him moving away. Felt the distance growing.
Felt the cold settling over our connection like frost.
My legs gave out.
I hit my knees hard enough to hurt, pine needles digging into skin through my clothes.
What just happened?
Cordelia was there instantly, her hands on my shoulders. Steadying me before I collapsed completely.
"Breathe," she said quietly. "Just breathe."
"He—" I couldn't form the words. "Did he just—"
"Yes." Her voice was grim. "He claimed pack authority over you. Made it clear you're not free to leave."
Not free.
The words echoed in my skull.
"That's—" I shook my head, trying to clear it. "That's not a deal. That's control."
"That's how it works." Cordelia crouched beside me. "Alpha's word is law in pack territory. Always has been."
"But—"
"I know." She squeezed my shoulder. "I know it feels wrong. But Seraphine—" She paused, choosing her words carefully. "—you need to understand something."
I looked up at her.
"Leaving pack territory without Alpha permission is considered abandonment. It's one of the worst crimes a pack wolf can commit." Her expression was serious. Worried. "The punishment is—"
"I don't care about punishment!" The words burst out of me. "My sister is out there alone and he's—he's—"
Holding hands with someone else. Threatening me. Keeping me here against my will.
I stopped myself. Forced the rage down.
Can't let her see. Can't let anyone know what I'm thinking.
"Why?" The question came out broken. Raw. "Why would he help me yesterday and then—"
Cordelia looked away. Conflict clear on her face.
"Tell me." I grabbed her arm. "Please. I need to understand."
She was quiet for a long moment.
"Because," she finally said, voice low. "He's been betrayed before. By someone he trusted. Someone he—" She stopped. "It nearly destroyed him. Nearly destroyed the whole pack."
I stared at her.
"So now he doesn't trust easily. Doesn't give people chances to get close." Her eyes met mine. "And when they do get close? When they make deals with him, promises, bonds?"
She didn't need to finish the sentence.
He holds onto them with everything he has. Refuses to let go.
Even when he should.
I thought about the cold in his eyes. The Alpha dominance. The way he'd claimed ownership over me like I was property.
Through the bond, I could still feel him. Distant now. But there.
Always there.
