Chapter 170: Shattered Alliance

Kaelen's POV

"We've had some incidents," I said instead. "Nothing confirmed as Damien personally. Could be remnants of his pack testing our borders."

I watched Zephyr's face carefully. Looking for a tell, any sign that he knew I was lying.

His eyes narrowed slightly. "Testing your borders. But you came all the way here based on my report. That suggests you think there's more to this than random border skirmishes."

"I think Damien is a threat to all our territories," I said. "If he's moving through Thornwick, he could be planning something larger. I wanted to see the evidence myself."

"To verify I'm telling the truth, you mean."

The words hung between us like a drawn blade.

"I didn't say that," I replied evenly.

"You didn't have to." Zephyr stood, moved to the window overlooking his packgrounds. "We've been friends for years, Kaelen. I've fought beside you, bled beside you. And you walk into my territory treating me like a suspect."

"I'm treating you like an Alpha who might have incomplete information."

"Bullshit." He turned, and there was real anger in his eyes now. "You think I'm involved somehow. That's why you're here playing investigator instead of just asking me straight what I know."

My wolf bristled at the accusation, even though it was true. "I think Damien has spies everywhere. I think he's been planning something for months, and anyone could be compromised without knowing it. I'm being cautious."

"Cautious." Zephyr laughed, short and bitter. "Is that what they're calling paranoia now?"

"It's what kept my pack alive this long."

"And it's what's going to destroy our alliance if you don't get your shit together." He moved back to the desk, planted both hands on it, leaning toward me. "I called you here as a courtesy, Kaelen. Because we're supposed to be on the same side. But if you can't trust me enough to share basic intelligence, then maybe we're not allies at all. Maybe we're just two Alphas with a piece of paper between us."

I should have backed down then. Should have apologized, explained my concerns without revealing the whole truth, found some middle ground.

But my pride wouldn't let me.

"If you're offended by basic operational security, that's your problem," I said coldly. "I'll review your evidence, conduct my own investigation, and report back with my findings."

"Your own investigation." Zephyr's voice went flat. "In my territory. Without coordinating with me."

"I'll keep you informed of anything significant."

"Get out."

I stood. "Zephyr—"

"Get out of my study, Kaelen. Stay in the guest quarters if you want, use whatever resources you need for your 'investigation.' But we're done pretending this is a partnership." He turned his back to me, staring out the window. "When you're ready to actually trust your allies, let me know. Until then, you're just another visiting Alpha with questionable motives."

I left without another word, anger and shame burning in equal measure.

---

The next day and a half were a fucking disaster. I interviewed Zephyr's guards, checked the border sites, analyzed the evidence from every angle. All while Zephyr watched from a distance, cold and professional, treating me like a foreign dignitary instead of a friend.

Every conversation was stilted. Every question met with technically correct but minimally helpful answers. His people took their cues from him—polite, efficient, and completely closed off.

And the worst part? The evidence all checked out. The sightings were real. The physical traces were authentic. If this was a setup, it was flawless.

But I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. That I was missing a piece of the puzzle. So I kept digging, kept questioning, kept wasting time while Sera sat at home believing I'd be back any minute.

I didn't answer her calls. Told myself I'd explain everything when I got back, when I had actual intelligence to share. Told myself she was safe with Lucian and Orion watching over her.

I was so fucking wrong.

---

The phone call came at midnight on the third day.

I was in the guest room, staring at a map of the border region for the hundredth time, when Lucian's name lit up my screen.

"Alpha. We're in big trouble."

Everything inside me went cold. Lucian's voice was shaking—something I'd never heard in twenty years.

"Seraphine tried to reach Ironfall on her own," he said, words coming fast and clipped. "Vespera fed her information about Lyralei. Orion intercepted them in the forest. There was an ambush. Damien was there—the real one, Kaelen. Orion's dead. Sera's gone. They used a silver collar to cut your bond and took her."

He paused, then continued, "Vespera claims Seraphine threatened her to join her journey... but Kaelen, her story doesn't add up. I doubt... Vespera might be connected to Damien."

The map blurred in front of me. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think past the roaring in my ears.

Damien. Alive. The real one.

Which meant the wolf I'd killed was a fucking decoy. A puppet dressed up to look like the monster, sacrificed to make me think the threat was over.

And I'd been so sure. So absolutely certain I'd won.

I left her. I left her believing I'd killed her enemy. I left her thinking she was finally safe.

"I'm coming back," I managed. "Now."

"Kaelen—"

"Now, Lucian. Get everyone ready. I want a full debrief the second I arrive."

I hung up and went straight to Zephyr's quarters, didn't bother knocking.

He was awake, sitting by the fire with a book. Looked up when I burst in, expression going from irritated to alarmed.

"I killed Damien a week ago," I said. No preamble. No cushioning the blow. "Thought I did, anyway. Ripped his throat out in my own territory, watched him bleed out, burned the body to make sure. But it was a fake. A decoy. And I was so fucking convinced I'd won that I never questioned it."

Zephyr stared at me, book forgotten in his lap.

"The real Damien just attacked my pack," I continued, voice raw. "Killed my Gamma. Took my mate. And I wasn't there because I was here, chasing down your evidence, trying to figure out if you were part of the setup."

"Kaelen—"

"I've been testing you," I cut him off. "The whole time. Every question, every interview, every fucking conversation—I was trying to catch you in a lie. Trying to figure out if you were working with him."

Zephyr stood slowly, carefully, like I was a bomb that might detonate. "You thought I was a traitor."
