Chapter 155: Shadows of Doubt

Kaelen's POV

I stared at the trade report until numbers blurred into meaningless shapes. Seven days since Damien's body hit the ground. Seven nights of Seraphine curled against my chest, her breathing sometimes steady, sometimes jagged with nightmares that made her whimper in her sleep. She'd wake gasping, claws extended, until she caught my scent and went limp again.

My fingers found the green leather notebook on my desk without thinking, rubbing worn edges smooth from constant handling. Our story. Our messy, complicated truth. Private. Sacred.

I flipped through border patrol schedules, double-checking rotation times and checkpoint coordinates. Everything looked tight. Professional. But something nagged at the back of my mind, a splinter I couldn't dig out.

Damien was dead. I'd made sure of that. But Ravencrest still breathed. And someone inside my territory had fed them information, opened doors that should've stayed locked. That traitor walked free, probably reporting back right now.

The thought made my wolf snarl. I wanted blood. But I couldn't act on rage. Had to be smart. Strategic.

A sharp knock interrupted my spiral. I knew that rhythm. Orion.

"Come in."

He entered carrying a thick file folder and medical documents, his expression grim in a way that made my spine straighten. Orion didn't do grim unless shit was about to hit the fan.

"Alpha." He set the papers on my desk with deliberate care. "Got updates on border security and the financial audit."

I gestured for him to continue, already bracing for bad news.

"Patrol doubled like you ordered. Four-hour rotations, no exceptions. Defense reinforcements finished yesterday. Every checkpoint's running clean, no breaches." He paused, jaw tightening. "But the financial audit flagged three names. Mid-level wolves with border access. All three received unexplained deposits in the past two months."

My claws extended involuntarily, scoring wood. "Names."

He rattled them off. I recognized two from security detail, one from logistics. Not high-ranking enough to make major decisions, but positioned perfectly to pass information.

"They're under surveillance," Orion continued. "Twenty-four seven. If they sneeze wrong, we'll know."

"And Zephyr? Kieran?"

"Clean so far. Zephyr's been communicating regularly, nothing suspicious. Kieran's movements match his calendar. But..." Orion's hesitation made my teeth grind. "Alpha, we need to discuss the autopsy report."

He slid a manila envelope across the desk. I opened it, scanning medical jargon and diagrams that showed Damien's body from every angle. Cause of death: massive trauma to throat and chest. Time of death: consistent with our timeline.

"What am I looking for?"

Orion leaned forward, tapping a section highlighted in yellow. "The fatal wounds. Massive trauma, yes, but look at the angle. He exposed his throat. No defensive tearing on the arms."

I frowned, reading closer. The medical examiner had noted unusual bruising patterns suggesting prior restraint. Defensive wounds were minimal. For someone who'd orchestrated Silverwood's massacre and evaded capture for months, Damien had gone down almost... easy.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying something doesn't add up." Orion met my eyes, unflinching. "This guy terrorized Luna for months. Broke through our defenses twice. Planned a genocide. Then he shows up half-drugged and lets you kill him without a real fight?" He shook his head. "And here's the thing, Alpha. Besides Luna, none of us had a confirmed visual on the real Damien before this to compare against."

Ice flooded my veins. My wolf bristled, hackles rising at the implication. "You questioning my judgment?"

"I'm questioning the evidence." Orion didn't back down. "That night you were running on instinct. Protective rage. You saw a threat to Luna and eliminated it. But did you verify identity? Check if the scent was authentic or just Damien's blood smeared on someone else?"

Fuck. No. I hadn't. I'd seen the knife at Seraphine's throat and lost my goddamn mind.

But Seraphine had recognized him. She'd looked at his face and screamed with terror so raw it had shredded my control. That reaction couldn't be faked.

"Seraphine knew him," I said, voice rough. "Her response wasn't faked. She saw Damien and knew."

"I'm not saying she lied." Orion's tone gentled. "But trauma does weird shit to memory. Fear makes people see what they expect to see."

"Enough." I slammed my hand on the desk. "Until we have concrete proof otherwise, that body is Damien. We don't tell Seraphine about these doubts. She's barely holding together as it is. Understand?"

Orion nodded slowly. "Understood. But Alpha, if there's even a chance—"

The door burst open. No knock. Lucian practically fell into the room, face flushed like he'd sprinted up three flights of stairs. He held a dark blue envelope embossed with silver, the Thornwick crest gleaming under fluorescent lights.

"Alpha Zephyr sent this." Lucian thrust the envelope toward me. "This morning. Express courier. Said it's urgent, eyes-only."

I stared at the envelope like it might explode. Timing was too convenient.

The paper felt expensive under my fingers, wax seal intact. I grabbed my letter opener and sliced through, unfolding cream-colored stationary covered in Zephyr's distinctive handwriting.

Kaelen—

Last night my border patrol found tracks in Thornwick's eastern forest. Three guards reported an unfamiliar male wolf, behavior and scent raising immediate concern. Upon investigation, we identified physical markers consistent with your reported description of Damien Ravencrest. Gray-black fur, left shoulder scarring, distinctive gait.

The individual evaded capture but left clear evidence of his presence. I'm forwarding you samples for verification.

Thought you should know immediately.

—Zephyr

The words punched through my chest like silver bullets. Gray-black fur. Left shoulder scar. Distinctive gait. Details only someone who'd actually seen Damien would know.

Details anyone with access to those briefings could replicate.

"It's a trap." Orion's voice cut through my racing thoughts. "Has to be. If Zephyr's dirty, this is him setting you up."

"Or he's legitimate," Lucian countered. "Garrett delivered this personally. I've known Garrett five years. He's solid."

I looked up sharply. "You verified the seal?"

"Checked it myself. Authentic. And Zephyr included a note saying you can confirm through the phone if you doubt him." Lucian gestured to the letter.

My wolf paced restlessly, torn between suspicion and hope. If Damien was alive—actually alive—then Seraphine wasn't safe.

But if this was a trap, walking into it could destroy everything.

"Orion, Lucian, out. Now."

They exchanged glances but obeyed, closing the door behind them. I needed silence. Space to think.

I pulled out my phone and stared at Zephyr's contact info. One call. That's all it would take to verify if this letter was real or bullshit.

Fuck it. I hit dial.

The phone rang once. Twice. On the third ring, Zephyr's smooth voice filled my ear.

"Kaelen. I assume you received my letter."
