Chapter 11: Bound by Blood

Seraphine's POV

The world narrowed to just us.

His mouth crashed against mine again, harder this time, more demanding. I met him with equal hunger, my fingers digging into his shoulders as if I could anchor myself to something solid in this madness.

But there was no anchor. No solid ground. Just free fall.

Stop. You need to stop this.

The rational voice in my head grew fainter with every passing second. Every touch of his hands erased another piece of my self-control. His fingers traced patterns on my skin that felt like they were burning straight through to my bones.

"Sera." My name came out rough, almost pained.

I didn't answer. Couldn't answer. My body was speaking a language I'd never learned but somehow understood perfectly.

The snow beneath us had turned to slush, steam rising where our bodies generated impossible heat. I barely felt the cold anymore. Everything was fire and need and this overwhelming sense of rightness that terrified me even as I surrendered to it.

Kaelen's eyes blazed pure gold now, no trace of the black remaining. When he looked at me, I saw something ancient and wild staring back—something that recognized me on a level that had nothing to do with names or words.

This is wrong. This is too fast. You don't know him.

But my wolf knew him. Every cell in my body knew him.

His mouth moved down my throat, teeth grazing the sensitive skin. I felt his breath hot against my pulse point, felt the moment he hesitated.

"Don't stop," I heard myself whisper. "Please don't stop."

The plea broke whatever remaining control he had.

---

Pain.

Sharp and sudden, his teeth sinking into the junction of my neck and shoulder. I cried out, my back arching, fingers clawing at his back.

But the pain lasted only a heartbeat.

Then it transformed into something else entirely. Something that made my vision go white, made every nerve in my body light up like I'd been struck by lightning.

Yes. Yes. This is it. This is what I am.

The thought came from somewhere deep and primal, from a part of me I'd kept locked away my entire life. My wolf surged forward, no longer content to hide, no longer willing to be suppressed.

I felt the moment everything changed. Felt something inside me snap into place like a key turning in a lock I didn't know existed.

My teeth found his throat before I consciously decided to move. I bit down hard, tasting copper and salt and something wild that made my entire body shudder with recognition.

Kaelen growled against my shoulder, the sound vibrating through my chest. His arms tightened around me, holding me so close I couldn't tell where I ended and he began.

His blood tastes like fire—pure and ancient.

The thought was my last coherent one for a while.

---

Time stopped meaning anything.

There was only sensation. Heat. Pressure. The feeling of something fundamental shifting deep in my chest. Like tectonic plates moving, like the earth reforming itself beneath my feet.

I felt him everywhere. Not just physically, but deeper. In my head. In my blood. In places I didn't have names for.

What is this? What's happening to me?

But I knew. On some instinctual level, I knew exactly what was happening.

We were binding ourselves together. Marking each other. Creating something that couldn't be undone.

The realization should have terrified me. Should have made me pull away, should have sent me running.

Instead, I held on tighter.

---

The world slowly came back into focus.

Sunlight. I blinked against it, disoriented. When had it stopped snowing? How long had we been...

Oh god. Oh god, what did I do?

I was sprawled on the ground, Kaelen's body still pressed against mine. His weight was solid and warm, his breathing ragged against my neck.

My entire body felt different. Wrong and right at the same time. Like I'd been taken apart and put back together slightly off-kilter.

Something tickled my awareness—a presence in the back of my mind that hadn't been there before. Foreign but familiar. Distant but intimate.

No. No no no.

I tried to move, but my limbs felt heavy, disconnected. My hand brushed against my neck, and I felt the raised skin there, still tender.

The bite mark.

He marked me. I marked him.

The full weight of what we'd done crashed over me like a avalanche.

Then I noticed something else. My arm—the one that had been torn open by the hunters' trap—didn't hurt anymore. I pushed myself up on my elbows, staring at the skin.

The deep gashes were gone. Not healed with scars, but actually gone. Just faint pink lines remained where I should have needed stitches.

"What the..." I touched the spot, pressing down hard. Nothing. No pain at all.

My leg was the same. The sprain that had made me stumble earlier had vanished completely.

I looked down at Kaelen, who had rolled onto his side, watching me with eyes that had returned to their normal deep black. But something in them had changed. A knowing. A connection.

"How is this possible?" My voice came out hoarse.

He sat up slowly, movements controlled. When he spoke, his voice was calm. Too calm for what had just happened between us.

"Wolf saliva has healing properties."

I stared at him. That couldn't be the only explanation. I'd been injured before, had been around other wolves. Nothing like this had ever happened.

His gaze drifted to his own shoulder, where I could see the mark I'd left on him. His jaw tightened, and for the first time since I'd met him, something that looked like regret flickered across his face.

"But that's not what matters right now."

The tone of his voice made my stomach drop.

"What do you mean?" But I knew. Deep down, I already knew.

Kaelen met my eyes steadily. "We're mated now. Bonded for life."

The words hit like a physical blow.

Mated. Bonded. For life.

No. That wasn't possible. That couldn't be possible. Mating was supposed to be a choice, something planned and deliberate, not something that happened in a moment of complete insanity.

But even as I tried to deny it, I could feel the truth of his words. That presence in my head—it was him. His emotions bleeding into mine, his thoughts hovering just out of reach but undeniably there.

I tried to stand, scrambling backward. My legs cooperated this time, but the distance I created between us didn't help. I could still feel him, could still sense his presence like a second heartbeat in my chest.

"What did you do to me?!" The words came out as almost a scream.
