Chapter 19
Vanessa stealthily entered the building, once an abandoned club now transformed into a prison with eerie and gory decorations adorning the walls. She had the gas bombs secured around her waist, a gun in hand.
"It's so dark in there," Alan's voice came through Vanessa's earpiece.
"Oh, really? I had no idea!" Vanessa replied sarcastically, moving cautiously.
"Focus, both of you," Jay's authoritative voice echoed through the earpiece.
Voices reached Vanessa's ears, putting her on high alert. "Did you hear that?" she whispered fiercely, prompting a grunt from Alan in response.
Jemima's scream pierced the air, causing Vanessa to gasp softly as she blended into the shadows to remain undetected.
"She's here!" Vanessa muttered, signaling Jay and Dimitri to gear up. Jay donned his vest and gestured for his team to surround the area.
"No one leaves alive," Jay declared with determination, leading Dimitri by his side. The anticipation of victory surged through their veins.
"Status, Vanessa?" Alan's voice crackled through the earpiece.
"There are three guards at the entrance, guarding what looks like a cage. I haven't spotted Jemima or Dennis yet," Vanessa whispered softly, her grip steady on her revolver.
"Drop your weapon," Dennis's voice demanded from behind, aiming a gun at her head. Vanessa's breath caught in her throat as her gun slipped from her grasp. She raised her hands in surrender, slowly turning to face Dennis.
"Vanessa?" Dimitri's voice called through the earpiece, but there was no response.
"I see you didn’t heed the warnings and came after me anyway," Dennis taunted, a sly grin playing on his lips, sending shivers down her spine.
"Where's SK?" Vanessa demanded through clenched teeth, masking the fear that threatened to consume her.
"Shall we make our move into the building?" Jay's voice crackled through the earpiece.
"Affirmative, now!" Vanessa bellowed, swiftly delivering a kick to Dennis's spleen, causing him to double over in agony.
A guard accompanying Dennis fired a shot in her direction, but Vanessa agilely dodged the bullet, deftly retrieving a gas bomb from her pocket and hurling it into the air.
Within moments, a thick smoke enveloped the area, disorienting everyone within its grasp.
"I hope you both remembered your masks," Vanessa coughed into the earpiece, struggling to see amidst the chaos.
"Where are you?" Dimitri's concerned voice cut through the haze as he and Jay entered the building.
"Locate Vanessa and ensure her safety. I'll search for Jem," Jay ordered, prompting Dimitri to spring into action.
"Alan, any visual on the location?" Jay inquired, moving stealthily through the smoky club towards a potential Jemima sighting.
"Negative, visibility is still impaired," Alan replied. Mask secured, Jay navigated through the smoke-filled room, kicking down a door and finding Jemima.
She hung weakly, barely clinging to life. Jay swiftly untied her, holding her close, her frail form and shallow breaths alarming.
"Jemima, are you alright?" Jay's voice was filled with concern as he held her tightly.
Her eyes, barely open, reflected a mix of defiance and vulnerability, blood trickling down her mouth and forehead, a stark contrast to the scars on her back that bore witness to her past struggles.
"I'm perfectly fine, you dumbass!" she quipped with a hint of sarcasm, her voice barely above a whisper, eliciting a soft chuckle from Jay. In a swift motion, he enveloped her in the blanket he had brought, shielding her from the cold truth of their surroundings, his protective instinct flaring amidst the chaos.
"Dimitri, status?" Jay's voice cut through the tension, seeking clarity in the midst of uncertainty.
"There are too many of them, we can't hold them off even if we tried," Dimitri's honest response echoed through the earpiece, painting a grim picture of their predicament.
"Alan, a way out," Jay's urgency palpable as he sought an escape route from the impending danger, the weight of their mission heavy on his shoulders.
"The way out is the only way in, you have to pass through that same door," Alan's words hung in the air, the gravity of their situation sinking in as they faced a perilous path forward.
"I've got Jem, what's left is to deal with Dennis and get out of here," Jay's determination cut through the chaos, his gaze steely as he prepared for the final showdown.
As guards closed in on them, Jemima leaned heavily on Jay, her resolve unwavering despite her weakened state.
"Give me a gun," Jemima's demand rang out, a testament to her fierce spirit refusing to be subdued by pain.
"I admire your courage, Wonder Woman, but you're not in a condition to fight," Jay's protective instinct surfaced, yet Jemima's defiance knew no bounds as she seized a gun from his pocket, taking matters into her own hands with a steely resolve.
In the final moments of their escape, Dennis made a desperate move, launching an attack on Jay with brutal force. Jemima, battling excruciating pain, struggled to rise, her determination to stand by Jay's side unwavering despite the searing agony coursing through her body.
"Dennis!" Her voice sliced through the tension, a mix of defiance and determination. Dennis turned, his gaze locking with hers, a dangerous smirk playing on his lips as he approached.
"Look at what I've made out of the most feared assassin. I have reduced you to nothing but a helpless pulp," Dennis taunted, his words laced with malice as his fist connected with her, sending Jemima crashing to the ground, gritting her teeth against the pain.
Struggling to rise, Jemima's hand found a glinting knife on the floor, plunging it into Dennis's legs, a cry of agony ripping from his throat.
"A helpless pulp that you couldn't get to beg you for mercy just to fuel your ego," Jemima's words, though breathless, dripped with defiance, each syllable a testament to her resilience in the face of torment.
"Jay, get her out now, the building is about to blow up!" Alan's urgent voice crackled through the receiver, spurring Jay into action as he extended a hand to Jemima, his own pain momentarily forgotten.
"Jemima, let's go," Jay's voice was a lifeline, a promise of escape as she rose, her gaze unwavering on Dennis.
"Hey, Dennis, remember when I said you're a dead man?" Jemima's question hung heavy in the air, a declaration of retribution for the suffering she endured at his hands, each moment etched in her memory like scars of a battle-worn warrior.
Fear flickered in Dennis's eyes as he stammered, "SK..." before a single gunshot drowned out his words, sealing his fate with finality.
"You're a dead man!"
