Chapter 29: The Sad Reality

Chapter Twenty Nine

The Sad Reality

The silence in our house was suffocating as I walked through the door. My feet felt heavy, each step taking me further into the whirlwind of emotions that had taken hold of me. Everything felt unreal. Veronica's confession still echoed in my mind-Peter had been planning to marry her. He had proposed to her. The truth was too much to bear, too much to process, and yet, it was now undeniable.

I had spent the entire day in an attempt to keep my composure-to numb the pain. Then, the minute I was inside, all that was weighing upon me from that which I had just learned overcame me, and it was time. It was now time to face Peter-to confront him. There would be no running from this truth anymore, no feigning all was just fine.

I found him in the living room, sitting on the couch with a distant look in his eyes. As soon as he saw me, his expression hardened, and I could tell he knew something was different. I had never been able to hide my emotions from him, not even the smallest detail.

Peter," I said, my voice trembling. It felt like the world was closing in on me, but I made the words come out. "I need to talk to you.

He didn't say anything for a moment, just stared at me with that unreadable expression on his face. I had no idea what he was thinking, but I knew he wasn't going to make this easy for me. The man I had spent years building a life with, the man I had trusted more than anyone in the world, was now someone I didn't recognize.

Is this about Veronica?" he asked, his tone flat, almost too calm for what I had just learned.

I nodded, swallowing the lump that had formed in my throat. The air between us felt thick, as though it had been poisoned by the lies and deceit that had slowly been creeping into our relationship for months.

"Yeah," I said softly. "It's about Veronica. I met her today.

Peter said nothing; he just stared at me, expecting me to continue. The silence stretched between us, a chasm that seemed to grow with every second.

"I know everything," I said, forcing myself to look him in the eye. "I know about you and her. I know about the proposal. I know she's planning to marry you. And I know that all this time, you've been lying to me.

His eyes flickered with something-something I couldn't quite place-before he let out a long sigh and leaned back against the couch, running a hand through his hair.

"You heard what you wanted to hear, Emma," he said, frustration laced into his voice. "Veronica and I have been working together. Yes, we've become close, but nothing has happened between us. You've just chosen to believe the worst.

I felt my heart shatter all over again. Was he really this blind to what he had done? Did he honestly think I wouldn't notice the changes in him, the way he had pulled away from me, the way he had become distant? Did he really believe I wouldn't see through the lies?

"Don't lie to me, Peter," I said, my voice rising in anger. "I spoke to her today. She told me everything. How you've been in love with her for months. How you proposed to her. How you're planning to marry her. And you have the nerve to stand here and tell me it's not true?"

Peter looked at me for a instant, his eyes cold, almost calculating, as if he weighed his next words. "Emma, you don't understand," he said, his voice calm, controlled, but I could hear the undercurrent of frustration in it. "I'm not happy. I haven't been for a long time. And Veronica. Veronica is someone who makes me feel alive. She gets me in a way you never could.

I felt as though the ground had been ripped out from under me. His words cut deeper than any physical blow could. To hear him say that to me-to admit that another had captured his heart-was too much to bear.

So, what?" I whispered, the tears threatening to spill from my eyes. "You've been planning this behind my back? You've been lying to me all this time, pretending everything was fine while you were in love with her?"

Peter's face hardened, and for a moment, he said nothing. I could see that he was struggling with something-maybe guilt, maybe anger-but it didn't matter. The damage had already been done.

I'm sorry, Emma," he said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I'm done. I can't keep living this lie. I want to be with Veronica. She's the one I want. Not you.

These words hit me like a freight train, knocking the breath from my body. I felt this searing pain in my chest, as if my heart had been ripped out and trampled on. How could he do this to me? How could he destroy everything we built together for someone else? How could he so easily walk away from everything he had promised me?

You. you can't be serious," I choked out, my voice shaking. "You're just going to throw away our marriage like it meant nothing? You're just going to walk away from everything we've been through?

He didn't respond immediately but instead rose off the couch in a grace of slow, deliberate movement. He did not seem angry, or sad, or even guilty. Just. resolute. It was as if he'd already made his mind up, and that was it; no going back.

"Emma, you have to understand," he said, his voice softer now, almost apologetic. "I never meant to hurt you. I really didn't. But I can't keep pretending. I can't keep pretending that everything is okay when it's not."

I felt the tears finally break free, streaming down my face as I tried to process what he was saying. "But Peter, we've been through so much together. We've built a life. We've made promises to each other. How could you just throw it all away for her?

He let out a long, tired sigh, as if all the life had been sucked from the room. "It's not that simple, Emma. It's not about just throwing things away. It's about what I need. And right now, what I need is her."

I shook my head, trying to grasp what I was being told. "What about me? What about our marriage?

He looked then at me, and in his eyes was something I could not quite pinpoint-something cold, something final. "You can leave if you want. If you think this marriage is worth saving, then fight for it. But I'm telling you now, I'm not going back. I'm done.

The words hit me like a slap in the face, and for a moment, I couldn't breathe. Everything I had ever known-everything I had believed in-was falling apart in front of me. Peter, the man I had trusted with my heart, had chosen someone else. He had chosen Veronica.

I tried to speak, tried to make him see reason. But no words came; I was smothering under the weight of every word he had just now said, and all that I could do was keep staring at him in full disbelief.

"I don't want to hear it anymore, Emma," Peter's voice was cold. "You can stay, but expect nothing from me. That's it.

And just like that, I realized there was no turning back. There was no fixing this. There was no way to make him love me again, no way to make him want me. He had made his choice, and I was no longer part of his future.

“I’ll leave,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. “I’ll leave, Peter. But I’ll never forgive you for this.”

I turned and walked out of the room, my heart breaking with every step I took. The sound of his voice faded behind me, but the pain remained, like a wound that would never heal. And as I closed th

e door behind me, I realized that the life I had known was over.
