Chapter 100: A Mother’s Betrayal
MIRA
The TV played on. My mother’s face filling the screen completely. Calm. Composed. Devastating.
“The Senator. The experiments. The children. It’s all real. And the people closest to this story have been covering it up deliberately. Including my own daughter.”
My phone exploded immediately. Calls flooding in. Texts from everyone. All asking the same desperate question.
Zane came running into the room. Saw the screen. His face went completely white.
“She promised,” I whispered. “She promised to disappear quietly.”
“She lied. Like she always has.”
Agent Mitchell called within minutes of the broadcast. “Ms. Darkmore. We have a very serious problem developing.”
“I know.”
“Your mother just went public with claims that you’ve been actively covering for the Senator.”
“She’s lying about my involvement.”
“Maybe. But the public doesn’t know that yet. And we need to contain this before it spreads further.”
“How do we do that?”
“You need to go public too. Tell your side of things. Today. Within the hour ideally.”
“I can’t do that. I don’t even know what she’s going to say next.”
“Then get ahead of her narrative. Hold your own press conference. Tell the truth as you know it.”
“What truth? Everything is complicated beyond what people can understand.”
“Then simplify it for them. Hero or villain, Mira. Right now the entire world is watching and deciding which one you are. You better choose fast.”
She hung up.
I looked at Zane. “I need to go public. Right now. Today.”
“Are you absolutely sure? Once you do this, there’s no going back for any of us.”
“I don’t have a choice. She’s framing me publicly. If I stay silent, everyone believes her version of events.”
We had thirty minutes to prepare. Called every media contact we had. Set up quickly in the palace conference room.
Helen helped me organize the evidence into clear packages. Files. Documents. Everything that proved the Senator’s direct involvement going back decades.
Delilah showed up breathless. Rushed from home the moment she saw the news.
“I just saw everything on TV. What can I do right now?”
“Be here. Stand beside us. That’s enough.”
Kade arrived minutes later. Stood right beside Delilah without hesitation. They looked at each other with that silent communication couples develop over time.
“We’re with you,” Kade said firmly. “Whatever happens next.”
Fifteen minutes until my press conference. My hands were shaking badly.
Zane took them both. Held them steady. “You can do this. You were made for exactly this kind of moment.”
“What if she says worse things after? What if she has real evidence against me?”
“Then we deal with it together. Like we always have.”
Alexander chose that exact moment to start crying loudly. Maya brought him in quickly.
“He wants his mama right now.”
I took him. Held him against my chest. Breathed in his familiar baby smell.
“This is for you,” I whispered against his soft hair. “For all of you. For our family.”
Five minutes left. I looked at myself in the mirror. Tired. Scared underneath it all. But determined.
“Ready?” Zane asked quietly.
“No. Let’s go anyway.”
We walked into that conference room together. Cameras everywhere. Reporters shouting questions over each other.
I stood at the podium. Zane behind me. Helen. Kade. Delilah. Our family united in a line.
“Thank you for being here,” I started. My voice steady despite the fear burning inside me. “My mother just made some very serious public claims. I want to address them directly and honestly.”
The room fell completely silent.
“My mother is right about one thing. The Collective is real. Powered individuals exist among us. And there have been illegal experiments conducted. All of that is true.”
Murmuring rippled through the crowd of reporters.
“What she failed to mention is who actually funded those experiments. Who orchestrated the trafficking of children. Who used The Collective as a personal power network for decades.” I paused deliberately. “That person is Senator Richard Kane.”
Explosive reaction. Reporters standing from their seats. Camera flashes going wild.
“I have documented evidence spanning twenty years of criminal activity. Communications. Financial records. Signed orders directly from his office. All proving the Senator’s direct involvement in serious crimes against children.”
I held up the folder of evidence. “This has already been submitted to the FBI. Agent Sarah Mitchell can personally confirm receipt.”
My phone rang loudly in the silence that followed. My mother’s number.
I answered on speaker. In front of every single camera in that room.
“Mira. That was very clever of you.”
“It’s the truth. All of it.”
“Truth is always subjective, sweetheart. You should know that by now.”
“Not when you have documented evidence backing every single word.”
“I have evidence too. Evidence that complicates your clean version considerably.”
“What evidence?”
“Evidence that you knew about the Senator for months before reporting anything. That you chose not to go public immediately. That you made private deals to protect your own family instead of protecting innocent children first.”
The room erupted into chaos. Reporters shouting questions at once.
I stayed calm. Kept my voice steady. “Every decision I made was designed to protect the maximum number of children possible. I cooperated fully with the FBI when the timing was right strategically.”
“Really? Or did you only cooperate when you realized you were about to get caught?”
“Mother. Stop this.”
“Why should I stop? You asked for public truth. Here is the real truth. You are not a hero, Mira. You are a mother who made selfish choices to protect her own family first.”
“That’s not fair or accurate.”
“Since when has any of this been fair?”
They stared at each other through the phone. Two brilliant, dangerous women locked in combat.
And then my mother said something that stopped the entire room cold.
“And there is one more thing. Something nobody in this room knows. Something that changes the entire narrative of this story permanently.”
“What?” I demanded.
“The children. Luna and Sol. They are not your biological children.”
My blood turned to ice in my veins.
“What are you talking about?”
“Zane and I had a private arrangement. Long before you ever met him. I paid him to have children with a woman who carried specific genetic markers. A surrogate. Luna and Sol are that surrogate’s children. Not yours biologically.”
“That is not true.”
“Isn’t it? Then ask Zane. Ask him right now. In front of everyone.”
The entire room turned slowly to look at Zane standing behind me.
He was deathly pale. His jaw clenched tight.
“Zane?” I whispered. “Tell me she’s lying.”
He couldn’t meet my eyes. Couldn’t say a single word.
“Zane. Please. Look at me and tell me she’s lying.”
Silence filled the room completely.
“It’s not what she’s making it sound like,” he finally said. Quiet. Broken.
“Then what is it exactly? Tell me the truth. Right now. In front of everyone watching.”
He looked at the cameras. At me. At the hundreds of people listening to every word.
“Before I met you, your mother approached me with a proposal. She wanted specific genetics produced in a child. I was told it was for medical research purposes. I agreed to it. A surrogate carried the twins.”
“And then?”
“And then I met you. Fell in love with you. Realized what I’d done was deeply wrong. That those children deserved a real family with real love. So I raised them. With you. Because I wanted them to have a mother who truly loved them.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“For years. Every single day.”
“Yes.”
“Luna and Sol don’t know I’m not their biological mother.”
“They don’t know.”
I stared at him. At the man I’d trusted completely with everything. The man I’d built an entire life with. Every choice made together.
Everything I thought I knew was wrong. Again.
Agent Mitchell stepped forward from the back of the room. Had been standing quietly there the entire time.
“Ms. Darkmore. I think we need to have a private conversation. Immediately.”
I looked at my phone. My mother had already hung up. Triumphant in her absence.
At Zane. Devastated. Completely caught.
At the cameras. Recording every single second of this destruction.
At my children. Somewhere safe in this palace. Not knowing their entire existence had been built on lies from the very beginning.
“Mira.” Delilah’s voice cut cleanly through the chaos around us. She stepped forward without hesitation. Kade right beside her.
“Whatever happens next,” Delilah said, looking me directly in the eyes with absolute certainty, “we are here. We are not going anywhere. This family does not break because of secrets and lies. It only breaks when people give up on each other. And we are not giving up. Not today.”
Kade nodded firmly beside her. “She’s right. We stand together through this. Through everything that comes next.”
I looked at them both. The two people who had once hurt me the most in this world. Now standing beside me when everything was falling apart around us.
Delilah reached out and took my hand. Squeezed it tight and warm.
“So what do we do now?” she asked simply.
I straightened my back. Looked at the cameras one final time.
Then I turned to Agent Mitchell. “Let’s talk. Now.”
I walked out of that conference room with my head held high.
But inside I was completely breaking apart.
Zane followed me into the hallway. Tried to touch my arm gently. I pulled away fast.
“Mira. Please. Let me explain everything.”
“Not now. I need space.”
“When then? When can we talk about this?”
“I don’t know. I need time to process what just happened.”
“I love you. Everything I feel for you is completely real. That was never once a lie.”
“But everything else was.”
He stopped following. Let me walk away alone.
In the hallway, Maya was waiting. She’d watched everything on the live stream from her room.
“Mom?” Her voice was small. Scared.
“I’m okay, sweetheart.”
“Are Luna and Sol really not your kids biologically?”
“They are my kids. In every way that actually matters.”
“But biologically they’re not yours.”
“Biology doesn’t make a real family, Maya. Love does. I taught you that very lesson.”
“I know. But it’s still really a lot to process.”
“Yes. It is. For all of us.”
I pulled her close. Held her tight against me.
“No matter what happens next, we’re a family. All of us together. Nothing changes that ever.”
“Even Delilah?”
“Even Delilah. Especially Delilah.”
That night, I sat alone in the nursery. Alexander sleeping peacefully in his crib. Luna and Sol’s colorful drawings covering the walls.
My phone rang. Unknown number.
I almost ignored it completely. But something made me pick up.
“Hello?”
Breathing. Heavy. Panicked breathing.
Then a young voice. Female. Absolutely terrified.
“Are you Mira Darkwood? My name is Sophie. I’m the surrogate. The woman who carried the twins. And I need your help desperately. Because the people who paid me are coming for me tonight. And they are going to kill me.“
