Chapter 66: The Moon's Final Stand

The Clash of Light and Shadow

Moonlight and shadow collided.

The grove trembled beneath their battle.

Alex’s claws crackled with silver energy.

The Devourer's limbs twisted unnaturally, shadows writhing like serpents.

The ground beneath them splintered with every strike.

The silver oak groaned, its roots quaking.

The air was thick with moonlight and malice.

The Devourer’s voice hissed through the chaos:

You are nothing, Alpha.

Alex slashed across the entity’s torso.

The shadows parted with a shriek.

The Devourer staggered back.

But the wound sealed instantly.

Alex’s breath came fast.

His heart pounded.

The moon’s power burned through his veins.

But the Devourer was relentless.

This was more than a fight.

It was a war for the grove.

And the moon itself.

Cain swung his axe through shadow-wolves at the grove’s perimeter.

The creatures dissolved into mist, only to reform seconds later.

"These bastards don't quit!" he shouted.

Maya lunged beside him, driving her silver blade into another wolf’s throat.

"We hold the line!" she barked.

The Crescent Fang fought with everything they had.

But for every shadow they destroyed, two more took its place.

The Devourer’s influence spread with each passing second.

The pack was losing ground.

And the grove’s roots continued to blacken.

The Elder stood near the oak's base.

His staff pulsed faintly as he muttered incantations.

He felt the Devourer’s energy pushing through the defenses.

The moon's power was waning.

If Alex didn’t finish the battle soon…

The grove would fall.

Alex ducked as a shadow tendril slashed across his chest.

The force sent him sprawling against a tree trunk.

His ribs ached.

The moonlight that once felt empowering now burned like molten ice.

The Devourer loomed above him.

Its form shifted continuously humanoid one moment, monstrous the next.

You are unworthy of the moon’s gift, it sneered.

Alex’s wolf growled.

He forced himself to his feet.

"Funny," he panted. "I was thinking the same about you."

He charged.

His claws met the Devourer’s arm with a thunderous crack.

The shadow howled as its limb disintegrated into black mist.

Alex staggered backward.

The moonlight around him flickered.

The power he wielded was immense.

But it was also draining him with every strike.

The Devourer’s form reassembled.

Its eyes glowed with amusement.

The moon will kill you, Alpha. And when you fall... the grove will be mine.

The Elder's voice crackled through the air.

"Alex!"

Alex twisted, locking eyes with the Elder across the battlefield.

"You can’t kill it with strength alone!" the Elder shouted.

The Devourer’s tendrils lashed toward the old wolf.

Cain intercepted, hacking through the shadows.

"What do I need?" Alex called back.

The Elder pointed to the oak.

"The moon's core! The energy that binds Kara to the tree!"

Alex’s chest tightened.

"If I draw from that, what happens to her?"

The Elder's face fell.

"She... may not survive the separation."

Alex’s wolf froze.

Kara’s essence was woven into the grove.

If he ripped the moon’s core free…

He might destroy her.

The Devourer laughed.

The choice is yours, Alpha.

It gestured to the roots, where Kara's ghostly form flickered weakly.

Save the pack... or save her.

Kara’s eyes opened slowly.

Her form was translucent and fragile.

The Devourer's corruption drained her strength with each passing second.

She met Alex’s gaze.

"Don't hesitate," she whispered.

His heart twisted.

"If I do this..."

"You’ll save the grove," she said.

"And you," Alex said desperately.

She gave a sad, knowing smile.

"I’m already gone, Alex."

The ground shook violently.

The roots cracked as the Devourer drove its power deeper into the grove.

The Elder shouted across the clearing.

"Alex! Now! The moon's core won't stay open much longer!"

Alex’s wolf roared in defiance.

He knelt beside Kara's shimmering form.

Her eyes softened.

"Lead them," she whispered.

Her fingers brushed against his cheek like a cold breeze.

"Always."

Tears burned in Alex’s eyes.

He placed his palm on the tree’s scarred trunk.

The moon’s core pulsed beneath his touch.

His wolf howled in agony.

He closed his eyes.

And pulled.

The grove exploded with silver light.

Moonlight surged through Alex’s veins like liquid fire.

His bones cracked.

His muscles tore and reknitted instantly.

The wolf inside him expanded beyond anything he’d ever known.

The scar on his palm burned like a brand.

The Devourer screeched as the moon’s light blazed through the darkness.

No!

The shadow lunged toward Alex.

Alex’s eyes snapped open.

They glowed pure white.

The Devourer's tendrils lashed forward.

Alex raised his hands.

The moonlight erupted from his palms.

The shadows dissolved on contact.

The Devourer staggered backward.

Impossible!

The silver oak groaned behind Alex.

Its branches withered.

Its bark cracked.

Kara’s form flickered violently.

She fell to her knees.

Her eyes met Alex's.

And she smiled.

"Finish it," she mouthed.

The Devourer lunged one last time.

Alex roared.

The moonlight condensed into a spear in his hand.

He hurled it with everything he had.

The spear struck the Devourer’s chest.

The shadow screamed.

The spear buried itself deeper.

The Devourer convulsed, its form unraveling like smoke in a windstorm.

The shadows evaporated.

The ground stopped shaking.

The moonlight pulsed one last time.

Then silence.

The Devourer was gone.

The grove was still.

The oak stood, but its silver shimmer had faded.

Its bark was dull.

Its roots no longer pulsed.

Alex fell to his knees.

The moonlight left his veins.

The strength drained from his limbs.

The pack gathered around him.

Cain knelt beside him.

"We did it," Cain said softly.

Maya exhaled in disbelief.

"It’s over."

Alex’s gaze lifted toward the tree.

Kara’s form was gone.

The grove was safe.

The moon was whole.

But Kara had paid the final price.

His heart shattered.

The pack howled in mourning.

The moon above glowed softly.

A silent witness to their sacrifice.

The sun rose over Lunar Heights.

The silver oak remained.

Weakened, but standing.

The Devourer was gone.

The pack was safe.

But Alex’s heart was hollow.

He stood beneath the tree one last time.

His scarred palm rested on the bark.

The surface was cold now.

Empty.

"Kara," he whispered.

The wind stirred the branches.

A single silver leaf drifted down.

He caught it in his palm.

Her scent lingered on the leaf.

Soft. Familiar.

He closed his eyes.

And for a moment…

He felt her presence.

The moon above shone brighter.

The pack watched from a distance.

Cain stepped beside him.

"What now, Alpha?"

Alex stared at the silver oak.

"Now?"

He clenched the leaf in his fist.

"We live."

He turned to the pack.

"And we protect the grove. Always."

The pack howled their agreement.

The moon’s guardian had won.

But the cost of that victory would never fade.

And as Alex looked toward the horizon…

He swore to honor Kara's sacrifice.

Until the last moonrise.
