Chapter 46: The Battle Within
Ian went to bed and dreamt. As the sun dipped beneath the horizon, casting an orange hue over the battlefield of Ian’s mind, Ian felt a deep chill run through his spine. He was not there to fight; he was there to watch. His heart raced as he stood on the edge of the encampment, eyes fixated on the chaos unfolding around him. In the distance, the clash of swords and the cries of the wounded echoed, a symphony of war that sent shivers down his soul. But he was not merely an observer but tethered to someone far more significant—Isabella.
Isabella was in the thick of battle. A fierce warrior, she wielded her power with grace and ferocity, her determination radiating like the sun. Ian had always admired her strength, but as he watched her dance through the chaos, he felt a sense of dread creeping into his heart. Each time she engaged an enemy, a shadow of fear whispered in his mind, telling him she might not return.
Suddenly, as if drawn by an invisible force, Ian's vision shifted. He was in a dreamlike state, hovering between consciousness and the abyss. He could see Isabella, but she was fading—slowly dissolving into the swirling dust and blood of the battlefield. Panic seized him. "No!" he shouted, but the sound escaped him, swallowed by the roar of war. This experience of “combat stress reactions,” led him to a disconnection from reality. his vivid dreams or hallucinations related to the battlefield, reflecting his subconscious fears and anxieties for his mate. Ian was experiencing a profound psychological reaction—his mind was trying to grapple with the reality of the situation, and it was manifesting in visions that felt all too real.
As he watched Isabella fade away, Ian felt a visceral pain in his chest. His mind raced with memories of their time together—their laughter, the way her eyes sparkled when she spoke of her dreams. He remembered her promise to return. "I will always come back to you," she had said. But here she was, slipping away like sand through his fingers.
In a moment of sheer desperation, Ian reached out, willing the vision to change. He envisioned her standing beside him, victorious and whole. He could almost feel the warmth of her hand in his. Yet the vision only darkened, and Isabella’s silhouette became a mere shadow, consumed by the chaos.
Ian’s heart raced as he sat up in bed, sweat beading on his forehead. The remnants of the dream clung to him like a shadow, vivid and unsettling. He could still feel the cold grip of despair as he watched Isabella, her light dimming, slipping away into darkness. He took a deep breath, trying to shake off the lingering fear that enveloped him. The room was quiet, save for the faint sound of crickets chirping outside his window. It was just a nightmare, he reassured himself. But deep down, he knew that dreams often had a way of revealing deeper truths.
As he swung his legs over the side of the bed, Ian felt a surge of determination. He couldn’t let that darkness take Isabella, not now, not ever. He had to find a way to protect her from whatever malevolence threatened them. He grabbed his phone and glanced at the time—3:00 AM. Too early to reach out to anyone else, but perhaps it was the perfect time to plan. He needed to gather information, seek allies, and prepare himself for the challenges ahead. With shaky hands, he opened his notebook and began writing down everything he remembered from the dream, piecing together the fragments of his subconscious. The dark force, the fading light—it was all a warning. “Isabella,” he whispered, thinking of her strength and kindness. “I won’t let you fade away.”
Determined, Ian stood up and walked towards the window, peering into the night sky. It was time to confront this darkness before it became a reality. His heart still raced, and the adrenaline still coursing through him. It took a moment for Ian to gather his thoughts, but the haunting image of Isabella's disappearance clung to him like a shadow. his disorientation giving way to a steely resolve. He had to find her. He had to ensure she was safe.
He went back to sleep after a quick run in the forest and the dream continued. Just as despair began to creep in, he heard a familiar voice cut through the din of battle. “Ian!” The sound was like a lifeline tossed into turbulent waters. He turned, and there she stood—Isabella, bloodied but unbroken, gleaming in the dim light of dusk. Relief washed over him like a wave, crashing against the shore of his fears. She was alive. The vision that had tormented him was nothing more than a figment of his imagination—an exaggerated reflection of his anxiety. Ian rushed toward her, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her close as if fearing she might vanish once more. In that moment, Ian realized the power of the mind in moments of crisis. It could create visions that paralyzed him with fear or provide clarity amidst chaos. The battle was not just outside; it was within him. The fight against fear, against the unknown, was one he would continue, but with Isabella by his side, he felt stronger.
As dawn broke out of darkness, when he woke up and reached for Isabella she was not there. He lost his mind screaming her name and searched for her. He ran to her parent’s house wailing her name. Ashton came outside after he heard the commotion. His mom and dad tried to convince Ian that she was returning the next day after her modelling gig was completed. Nothing they said convinced Ian could convince him that Isabella was ok. They came to the conclusion Ian needed to see a mental health psychologist. The doctor placed him on medication and he fell sound asleep. The doctor told them that he would release the Beta when his mate returned the following day.
