Chapter 43: Annie’s Calculated Move
As time progressed and the intimacy between Beta Ian and Isabella improved, anyone could see Annie becoming more jealous of the relationship. Everyone ignored her plea for help except for Annie’s friend Sarah. The two of them began to plot against Isabella. Alpha Jacob and Brian were both protective of Isabella and would do their best to prevent her from being harmed by gossip. Alpha Brian called Sophia and told her what needed to be done.
Annie sat in her dimly lit family home, the shadows of the evening creeping through the half-drawn curtains. The flickering light from her laptop illuminated her determined expression as she began to outline her plan—the plan to remove Isabella once and for all from Ian’s life. For months, she had watched from the sidelines, her heart twisting with jealousy as she witnessed the bond between Ian and Isabella grow stronger each day. It was time to take action.
Annie's motivation was the thought that she must have Ian and get rid of Isabella; she had become strategic in her plans. As a warrior, she was trained to analyze data and werewolf behavior, skills she now intended to apply to her personal life. Isabella had taken Ian from her. She had known Isabella all her life, but during their junior year in high school, she thought Ian did not like Isabella, and she could not imagine how their friendship had blossomed into something deeper. Annie couldn't ignore the fact that she had lost Ian, and this haunted her. She knew that Ian’s relationship, built on a deep friendship with Isabella’s brother, would not allow space for Annie to make a move on Isabella. She had to time it right, especially now that Patrice was out of the picture. She had to get others to help her because, so often, a relationship like Ian and Isabella's leads to long-term commitment. This was a fact that fueled Annie's urgency.
In her mind, it was simple: the longer Isabella remained in Ian's life, the harder it would be for Annie to weave herself into his world. She needed a plan, one that would require precision and perhaps the help of others. Ian had ignored her for too long.
Annie turned to her trusted circle, enlisting the help of her close friend, Sarah, who was known for her persuasive skills. Sarah had a knack for getting people to see things her way. Together, they sat down over coffee, brewing ideas that would set the wheels in motion. “Isabella is too much of a distraction for Ian,” Sarah said, stirring her drink. “We could create a scenario that makes him question their relationship.” Annie nodded, her mind racing through potential scenarios. They discussed the possibility of creating misunderstandings, planting seeds of doubt about Isabella, especially while she was away at university in France. They must highlight that people often change their beliefs to align with their actions, especially when faced with conflicting information. So they would lead Ian to believe that when Isabella goes away on her modeling gigs, she is seeing someone else. Although Ian would not believe them, they would still plant the seed and water it with rumors to gradually create doubts in his mind.
With a clear plan in mind, Annie and Sarah began to execute their strategy. They started subtly, dropping hints to Ian about Isabella’s past relationships when she was in France and her tendency to be emotionally unavailable. They painted a picture of Isabella as someone who wouldn’t truly commit to Ian, even if he thought she was “the one.” They emphasized that Beta Ian needed his Beta female beside him at all times. Annie’s approach was methodical. She initiated conversations with Ian, asking him leading questions about his feelings for Isabella. “Do you really think she’s into long-term relationships? I’ve heard she’s been with a lot of guys.” Each question was designed to steer Ian’s thoughts away from Isabella and toward Annie herself. Ian was infuriated with Annie. He told her that if she did not stop participating in and sharing gossip about Isabella with others, he would talk to Alpha and have her removed from the Yorker Pack.
Like all societies, this was the women’s way of bullying each other, so Annie was not the first person to use social influence as a means to achieve personal goals. In her case, she showed how an individual’s perception can be swayed significantly by the opinions of close friends. She knew participants changed their opinions on social issues when presented with persuasive arguments from friends. So she used her influence to get all their friends to start doubting Isabella because she was often away and unable to defend herself. Annie and Sarah were banking on this principle. If they could sway Ian’s perception of Isabella, the path to Annie’s ultimate goal would become clearer.
As days turned into weeks, Annie noticed a shift in Ian. He seemed to be questioning his feelings about Isabella, and while Annie felt a rush of triumph, she also sensed the tension in their interactions. Ian had begun to confide in Annie more, sharing his doubts and insecurities. It was a sign that their friendship was evolving, and yet, a nagging sense of guilt began to creep in. Sophia's buddies from the warrior group heard about Annie’s strategies. Sophia teleported to the bar where Annie met Ian. She masked herself and set up to wait for her sister’s enemy. On a fateful evening, as they sat in a local bar," Annie caught Ian staring off into space. She decided to press further. “What’s on your mind?” she asked, feigning innocence.
“I don’t know, Annie. I just... I feel like Isabella isn’t being completely honest with me. Maybe it’s just my imagination,” Ian replied, a hint of frustration in his voice.
As Sophia listened to this conversation, she wanted to hit Ian across the head. If he was having doubts, he should talk to Isabella herself and not Annie.
In that moment, Annie realized the gravity of her actions. Was she really willing to manipulate Ian’s emotions and jeopardize their friendship for the sake of her own desires? Fueled by her determination to separate Ian and Isabella, she now felt like chains were binding her.
As the weeks progressed, Annie found herself torn. She had begun to care for Ian in a way that transcended mere attraction. The time they spent together, the laughter, the late-night conversations—it all felt genuine. The more she implemented her plan, the more she questioned her motives.
Could she really live with herself after orchestrating Isabella’s removal from Ian's life? The thought of being the architect of someone else's heartbreak weighed heavily on her conscience.
Sophia decided to confront Annie. When Ian left Annie to use the washroom, Sophia approached her. Annie was shocked; she assumed that Sophia was Isabella. The questions Sophia asked her made her skin crawl. Sophia pretended to be Isabella and used a soft version of Isabella’s voice. She told Annie she knew what she was up to and that she wondered if anyone who loved someone would like to see that person hurt. She was forthright and asked her if she would hurt Ian; if she did, then she could not have loved him. When you love someone, you want to see that person happy. After her contrite talk with Annie, she teleported away.
In a moment of clarity, Annie decided to confront her feelings. Perhaps it was time to share her true emotions with Ian, to be honest about her intentions rather than relying on manipulation. After all, the most successful relationships are built on authenticity and trust, not deceit.
As she sat back, contemplating her next move, Annie realized that love and relationships could not be dictated by strategy alone. The heart had its own intricate web of emotions that required sincerity above all else. It was time to choose a new path, one that honored both herself and a different mate.
The thought was: would she stand by her word? Would she be a true friend or betray her feelings for Ian and the friendship that had blossomed between them?
After all, in the game of love, the true victory lies not in winning someone over by removing obstacles but in building a connection that stands the test of time. She realized that the love she had in her heart for him would want him to be happy.
That night, she made a decision to find her own fated mate, and if she could not, she would choose to be an unrequited lover."
