Chapter 16
“It strikes a deep chord within me.
“Whenever I listen to it. I feel like I’m back in those old days again… Back then, I was hopelessly in love with someone, and I was such a coward, too afraid to tell him about my feelings.
“It reminds me of my devotion, the joy I felt when I got to be with him, and…”
Her eyes
dimmed slightly. “The deep despair when I learned I only had months left.
“The despair was soul–crushing.
“Ms. Daphne, I used to be devastated by such despair to the point that I almost wanted to end my life.
“And what touches me the most in the song is its final message letting go.

“It’s just like the current me–I’ve learned to accept the reality, let go of the past, and cherish every remaining moment I have.”
Though her voice trembled slightly as she spoke, she wore a wise, easy smile throughout, which reminded everyone what she had been through and made them feel sorry for her.
Maxwell, who was next to her, was one of those people.
As Roxanne poured out the pieces of her soul, Stephanie clearly captured the raw ache in Maxwell’s gaze.

It was something she had never seen in his eyes before.
Roxanne had been with him for barely a year, yet he had already forgotten their seven years together.
They looked like a modern–day Romeo and Juliet.
What a shame that they weren’t.
What a shame that she was his wife and wasn’t touched by their deep love for each other.
She suddenly felt that she was the intruder, the unwanted one.
Roxanne continued, “Ms. Daphne, your song perfectly mirrors what I’ve been through these days. I totally relate. I’m sure you want someone who gets you to have it, right?”
She seemed so confident that Stephanie would definitely sell the song to her.
After all, no songwriter would refuse to sell their song to the one who truly understood it.
But…
All of a sudden, Stephanie wanted to laugh.
The song was about her falling for the wrong person, who betrayed her and broke her heart.
It was about her falling in love with Maxwell, her joy after marrying him, her despair after discovering his betrayal, and her letting go after the pain.
And now, Roxanne was trying to impress her by telling her how touching this song was?

How ridiculous.
She couldn’t help but let out a laugh.
Maxwell squinted slightly.
“Ms. Daphne, the fact that Roxie saw this song means you intended to sell it.”
He sounded so cold and calm as he hit the point, as if he were dealing with another business partner.
“Now that you don’t want to sell it, there can be only two reasons. Either you’re unhappy with the buyer, or the price isn’t satisfying enough.”
He wanted to look in Stephanie’s eyes, but all he saw were her sunglasses.
“Famous songwriters get paid six figures per song, and celebrities receive seven figures every year from royalties.
“We’ll pay you 1.5 million dollars for your song. I think that’s satisfying enough,” he said.
Stephanie laughed while saying nothing.
1.5 million dollars? She was so flattered.
Hardly anyone knew Daphne now. She would have been surprised if anyone was willing to pay more than 100 thousand dollars for her song.
Maxwell made such an offer for Roxanne.
She laughed so hard that she was almost bursting into tears.

Roxanne found her unreasonable and couldn’t help but feel furious.
