Chapter 45

Rhiannon was seated on her office chair when her phone started ringing.

She frowned as she glanced at where she had placed it wondering who might be calling her at that time.

The call ended while she was still debating whether to pick it up or not.

She stretched her hand, took it then switched it on so that she could see who was calling her.

Just before she took a glance, she received an incoming call.

Having no other choice, she picked it up.

“Hello,” she said immediately she picked it up and placed the phone on her right ear

“Hello, madam. Am I talking to Miss Rhiannon?” the person on the other side said, causing Rhiannon to glance at the screen again.

“Yes, may I know who I am speaking to, please?” she asked politely as she continued going through the documents that were on the table.

“That’s good. I am a prison warden,” the person on the other side said her occupation without saying her name in fear that Rhiannon might tell the high-ups about her collaboration with the Clarks’ mother and daughter.

Rhiannon halted what she was doing and stared at the blank wall with a smile on her face.

“Oh, how may I help you?” she asked politely and curiously as she wondered what the mother-daughter duo had on their sleeves.

“I am sorry Miss for disturbing you but your mother and sister want to talk to you,” the prison warden said.

“I am sorry but my mother died when I was still a kid. Also, she only gave birth to me thus I can’t understand what you are saying. It seems that you have been lied to. Madam, you need to be careful the next time and ask the prisoners to give you the right information as it can cause you to be in big trouble,” Rhiannon said in a serious tone as she hated when that family claimed that they were related.

She wondered how she could have despicable people in her life. She blamed her father for everything and was blind. She hoped that at least her father would have selected a good woman instead of the scheming woman she chose.

At the same time, she didn’t want to give the prison warden a good time as she knew what the latter was doing was against the law.

As expected the prison warden started panicking as soon as she heard Rhiannon’s words.

All she thought of was that she was done. She was bribed and broke one of the rules cause she was guilty. If that wasn’t enough, she made the person whom she was sent to angry.

‘What if she now reports me to the head?’ she wondered.

“Madam, why aren’t you speaking?” Rhiannon asked with a mysterious smile on her face.

“I am sorry miss but that’s what they told me. I didn’t have the intention of offending me. Kindly please forgive me,” she said politely but shatteringly.

Rhiannon’s smile vanished when she heard the latter’s words and knew that she was a very honest person. At least, that’s what it seemed like. She didn’t have an issue with the warden taking some small money from the mother and daughter. She wished that all the money they had there was used and they were left penniless.

“It is okay. I am not mad. I was just informing you. The woman is my father’s mistress and the lady is the bastard,” she said.

Although the warden was stunned at the information, she wasn’t so shocked as she had heard of such things countless times.

“Oh, I am sorry. I never knew that,” the warden said.

“You previously said that they want to talk to me or see me?” Rhiannon asked with a wicked smile on her face.

“they said that they wanted to talk to you. Miss, do you need me to call them so that you can speak to them?” the prison warden asked.

“Naah. What I need you to do is exhort them the remaining money that they have,” Rhiannon eyes lightened up as she imagined what kind of scene Kaylee would cause and which punishment she would be given for going against the prison warden.

“Huh?” the prison warden was surprised and at the same time, she couldn’t understand the latter.

“What you heard is correct. Tell them that I called you but the phone was taken by someone else. Thus you need more money if they want you to continue calling me. After they add the money, wait for some minutes then go back and tell them that you have talked to me and I am willing to talk to them. They didn’t see whether they wanted to talk on the phone or for me to go there, right?” Rhiannon asked.

“Yes miss. They just said that they wanted to talk to you. Whether you talk to them on the phone or come to meet them, it is all your decision,” the warden said immediately.

Rhiannon smiled and knew that it was just that the other and daughter had forgotten to say that they didn’t want her to come but they wanted to talk to her on the phone. She felt that this was good as she wanted them to be so miserable.

“That’s nice. Tell them you need more money if they want to use the phone to speak to me. After you get the money, even if it is just the deposit, you call me and tell me. The rest amount, you will have to make things miserable for them to hand it over,” Rhiannon said.

The prison warden was so happy and immediately decided to do what Rhiannon had told her as it looked fun and at the same time, she would be earning more money than she imagined.

“Okay. I will do that immediately,” the warden said before hanging up the call. She felt that she needed to accomplish everything she was told before the mother and daughter started arguing or making things difficult for her.

Rhiannon heard the beeping sound and a smile formed on her face.

‘Well, isn’t this quite interesting, huh? Have they finally given up or is it just that Dad blackmailed them?’ she asked herself.

She felt that if her dad was the reason for her receiving that call, there wasn’t anything fun in everything that was about to happen.

Without being told, she knew that her father was the one who gave the mother and daughter money to spend. Rhiannon wanted them to be miserable in there not kind of enjoying life just because they had money.

She arranged the documents that were on her desk and tidied the place before taking her phone and walking towards the door.

“Is my father in his office?” she asked one of the bodyguards after she stepped out of the office and locked the door.

“Yes miss, your father always comes here early in the morning and leaves so late at night. Maybe you should check on him,” the bodyguard answered as he felt Rhiannon was supposed to know how her father was coping.

Rhiannon nodded her head then thanked the bodyguard before walking to her father’s office.

She knocked at the door when she arrived outside his office.

“Come in,” a cold voice sounded in the room.

Rhiannon opened the door and walked in.

“Is there something that needs my signing? I am going through these documents so that I cannot submit them to Rhiannon with any mistake as it will take her time as she goes through them,” Mr Clark said immediately he heard someone walking in and closing the door behind thinking it was his secretary.

Rhiannon pursed her lips as she stared at her father.

‘No wonder all the documents that are been brought are flawless. I didn’t expect him to go through them before I needed them just because he wanted to help me. Now I understand why my work has been so easy,’ She said in her head as she felt conflicted.

Although her father had never given her any finance or support, he always told her to take care of herself and that the money he was supposed to give her would be used for some projects as she was still receiving allowances from her aunt.

At that time, she had thought that it was just because he loved Kaylee so much that he gave her money and spoiled her rotten but she never expected that the latter had a soft spot for her.

She felt as if she would cry anytime but she controlled her tears.

“Dad?” she called softly and her voice hoarse.

Mr Clark was shocked when he heard his daughter’s words.

“Rhiannon, what are you doing here?” he asked as he lifted his head looking at her.

“Dad, I have just been informed that you come here so early in the morning and go home so late. Don’t you know that you should take care of your health? What if you get sick or something bad happens to you?” Rhiannon asked as she walked forward.

“Rhiannon,” Mr Clark called her name as he was surprised at her words.

He had always thought that Rhiannon never cared about him and that’s why she did everything to go against him. Everything he was doing was just to make his daughter trust him. He was afraid that when she discovered his plans, things would be as simple as they currently were.

“Dad, I can do anything for myself. Kindly don’t go through every paperwork that I am supposed to go through just because you are afraid of tiring me. It is my work and responsibility as the president and I have to do everything dutifully. As for you, you should do the work that brought you here,” Rhiannon said in a serious tone as her sharp eyes stared at Mr Clark.

Mr Clark wondered whether what he had heard previously was his illusion or not.

“Hope I have made myself clear, Mr Clark,” Rhiannon said coldly when she saw that the latter was lost.

Mr Clark was once again stunned by how she had addressed him and felt conflicted. Nonetheless, he nodded his head. “Yes, president.”

Rhiannon broke into a smile when he heard his answer.

“Are you doing these just to help your wife and daughter get out of prison? If it is, you better not waste your time. I will let them go after they have told me where my jewels are,” Rhiannon said coldly as she sat in front of her father.

Mr Clark gulped in fear but he overcame it after a while.

“Why are you saying that? Why should I care about them if they don’t care about me? The last time Kaylee was here, I asked her to give me the shares so that I could become the company’s president as you had promised to give it to me if she did but what did she do? She refused. Last week, you and I argued because of them. At that time, you said that if they don’t return your belongings, I, as their accomplice, will also suffer and lose my CEO position,” Mr Clark stated explaining and Rhiannon remained silent as she listened to him.

“I later went to see them. I requested them to tell me where they were hiding the jewels and also told them what you had told me. But do you know what Kaylee said, she said that I was so selfish and I always think about myself. If I did, would I have sided with them that night? Would I have argued with you at the board meeting? Everything I did was for them but what did I get in return? Kaylee is a very ungrateful and selfish person. I am tired of always protecting her,” he said with a sigh and Rhiannon raised her eyebrows as she never expected that such a thing had occurred.

"I felt so guilty when I remembered how I treated you in the past. I always believed her over you, gave her everything, and gave you nothing just because I felt that I had missed her childhood while you had always been with me. That is the biggest mistake of my life. Rhiannon, I hope that you will find a heart to forgive this old man,” Mr Clark concluded causing Rhiannon to purse her lips.

She gave him a mocking smile as she wondered where he had gotten the guts to ask her that.

‘Did he know just because he always supported Kaylee, I would have lost my life?’ she asked herself.

“Dad, I understand what you feel,” she said as she stood up and left.

Mr Clark watched her leave and then let out a mocking laugh when Rhiannon closed the door behind her.

Rhiannon walked to her office and stood on the balcony as she glanced at the tall buildings in the city.

“Now I understand why Kaylee and her mother called me. I am sure that they are so desperate to leave that place and since Dad refused to help them, I am their only option,” she said as she patted her chin.

“Maybe we should pay them a visit,” she said with a wicked smile as she walked back into the office and took her handbag.
