Chapter 61 No going back.
Isla’s POV.
The words still pondered in my chest as I sorted contract files on my table.
Last night, I couldn’t wink my eyes even for a second.
Those words aren’t to be taken for granted, not when I've heard them from the twins twice.
I didn’t take it seriously on the first notice, I was thinking maybe it was just some jokes.
Maybe he was just trying to confuse me, he was trying to see my reactions.
But now, it’s becoming obvious.
Who did I really get married to? The Don or his twin brother?
Everything around me blurred, I was losing my focus.
I was thinking, should I confront him, or just play along?
Or did he say those words out of jealousy? Hmmm God help me.
A sharp knock hit my table, I jerked backward.
“Hey?”
I lifted my face. It was Damian. My heart sank.
“Hey… good morning, sorry I was just… how long have you been standing here?”
“You looked startled, are you okay?”
I cleared my throat, trying to steady my voice.
“My mind drifted off for a second, maybe I didn’t have a good night. I didn’t notice your arrival.”
“I’ve been looking at you through the glass, I thought maybe I should step out and…”
“I’m okay…” I said, forcing a smile on my face.
“Are we going for the meeting now or…”
“We’re leaving now. I’ll go get my coat.”
He turned and walked away.
My hand lifted to my chest, pressing them lightly.
“God. I almost passed out. That was close.”
The meeting was a long one. I couldn’t focus.
I was body present, absent minded.
I managed to finish my presentation without drawing attention.
But Damian noticed every little detail I made that I hadn’t done before.
I just wanted the day to go by, unlike me. I almost drifted off. Luckily Damian was sitting beside me.
His cold hands kept bringing me back.
It was already late when we arrived at the mansion.
We didn’t say much on the ride home, I was quiet.
He’d asked if I was okay countless times and I always pretended I was, forcing a smile.
I stepped into the house without saying a word.
Dante was sitting at the dining table, tapping on his screen.
Dinner was already served. Was he waiting for me?
I turned to the butler. “Bring my dinner in my room, I won’t be having it here.”
“Yes, Mrs.”
Dante turned to me. “Why did you suddenly change?”
“I just need some space. I don’t feel comfortable sitting here anymore.”
“You knew I was waiting for you, right?”
“Who knows. Your words are not to be trusted.”
“How was your day? You look lost.”
“Thanks to you. Nothing good ever comes out of sitting next to you.” I teased.
He rose slowly from his seat, moving toward me.
“The way you always describe me… makes me look pathetic.”
“I never said you were. Those are your words, not mine.”
“I won’t accompany you further. I need to rest.”
I walked away, steadying my legs on the ground.
What was he expecting me to say? And yes he’s a pathetic person.
Dinner was a short one. Chicken soup and rice.
I managed to finish them. Not like I was really hungry, just needed something to chew.
Josie hadn’t called in days.
I didn’t really bother about it. My phone was connected to the cameras at home.
Every movement they made was under my watch.
But my mind was unsettled. I just hope they’re okay.
My phone vibrated.
Once, twice and then, it started ringing.
It was Damian.
I ignored it. I just let it ring while I looked at it.
It kept ringing on and on. I didn’t want to talk to him.
I still had doubts in me and I didn't want to show it.
There was no way he wouldn’t notice.
Not when I was lost in my thoughts and didn’t pay much attention to him today.
I knew ignoring won’t solve anything but I just had to.
Every time I tried to press the answer button, the words came sharp and clear.
“Are you even sure you’re married to the right twin?”
And the worst of it all? Not just the words, their faces.
I had almost doubted myself. I thought I was smart or at least found love.
A sharp knock came at the door. My heart jumped.
“Whose there?” I asked, as heat flared through me.
No one answered.
Who would be knocking at my door in the middle of the night.
I slowly walked toward the door without making a sound.
The knock came again, my eyes widened in fear.
My eyes searched around for something I could use for defense.
There was nothing.
The knock came for the third time my legs trembled.
I quickly grabbed my heels. Let out a deep sigh.
My hand twisted the door handle slowly.
I quickly lifted the heels forward as the door opened.
My hand flew forward, aiming for the person's head.
“Are you for real?” My hand hung midair.
“God! You scared me to death.”
I stepped backward. It was Dante. What was he doing here?
“What are you doing here in the middle of the night?”
“What are you holding? A weapon to catch a thief?”
“I wasn’t expecting anyone at the door, not even you.”
“You weren’t taking my calls, I thought something happened to you.”
He walked inside and closed the door behind him.
“I was thinking you were already asleep. But I noticed the light was on in your room.”
“I couldn’t sleep. No matter how hard I tried to.”
“What’s wrong with you? You’ve been acting weird throughout the day. Are you mad at me?”
“I’m fine. I just don’t feel okay. I just need to rest and I’ll be fine.”
He closed the distance between us. “You’ve said this countless times already.”
“I’ll be fine, I promise.”
How could I be fine? When I doubted myself?
When everything I was thinking was real might be a lie all along?
When I don't even know if I’m just a chess piece in someone else’s game?
I just wished for the ground to open and swallow me whole because I don’t like this feeling that is brewing in me.
Am I going to used by everyone forever?
