Chapter 36 Chapter 0036
•CASSANDRA•
I breathed in and out when I got into my office and pressed my hand against my chest. I didn’t know I was that close to them finding out I was not totally human.
Grace reminded me I might not protect Alena as well. She was vulnerable out there with kids who didn't understand why she could do certain things they couldn't.
I wondered if moving to the human territories with her was safe, but at the same time, I knew we had no choice.
Goldenmane Court was no longer my home, and starting over somewhere else again wasn't an option.
I went to sit down on my chair and looked at Alena's picture, which rested in the corner of my table.
She was everything to me, including her brother who couldn't even recognize me when he was in the hospital.
My heart ached, thinking he might have moved on from the idea of seeing me again. He made his choice that day when I was banished and he ran into Nadia’s arms.
Nadia was his new mother.
A knock at the door quickly pulled me out of my thoughts, and I cleared my throat, wiping away my tears before answering the door.
"Yes, you may come in!"
Dr. Langford walked in and closed the door quietly behind him. He was holding an A4 envelope.
I stood up from the chair when I realized it might be important, but mostly I hoped it wasn’t another suspension.
Alena was in a new school and I didn’t want to worry about paying her fees and the rent. Dante was already doing so much for me, and I didn’t want to worry him.
"Is everything okay, Dr. Lang?"
He stared at me when he heard the way I called him. But fuck it, he knew that slang very well. All the new interns were calling him that, and I went along with it because I didn’t want them to think I wasn't cool.
"Oh, I—" I cleared my throat. "Dr. Langford," I corrected myself. "Is everything okay?"
"The IT department has removed all the posts that were trending about you and has also shut down the accounts that were reposting the posts. You’re clear now, but we are still trying to find out who wrote the posts. Once the person is found, legal action will be taken against them."
He gave me the A4 envelope, and I opened it and looked at the paper. I was happy that my name was cleared, but I couldn’t get Amelia off my mind.
She was the one who hated me enough to make anything trend about me because she thought I'd never be brought back to the hospital.
"Have you narrowed down the potential people capable of this?"
"Not yet," he answered. "But our IT team is trying to find the person responsible for this. Once we find them, we will file a legal action against them."
"Thank you, Dr. Lang... Ford." I smiled as he turned to the door, but before walking out, he tilted his head and looked at me.
"Please don’t get into any trouble again, Dr. Frost. This hospital can't afford another lawsuit threat. We might be wiped out next time another patient wants to go against us legally. So, can we act right next time and follow the rules?"
"Yes, of course. I am very sorry," I replied. "I never meant for things to escalate the way they did. Next time, I will follow all the rules."
Dr. Langford nodded with a smile before walking out.
I folded the paper in irritation and slid it into my handbag. I then headed to the door so I'd find Dante and brief him about my conversation with Dr. Langford.
But my heart jumped the moment I opened the door and saw him walking past my office with Amelia. He was clinging close to her, heading to the emergency wing.
I leaned back and stepped into my office. I scoffed, my mind already working out the scenarios about why they were walking beside each other as if I was missing something.
"Take it easy, Amelia," he muttered to her before they disappeared around the right corner.
When a nurse came and knocked on my door, informing me I had a patient waiting for me in her ward, I was already fuming.
But I tried as best as I could to plaster a gentle smile on my face, trying to convince myself that it was probably nothing.
Dante knew better than to embarrass me in front of the entire hospital by having a thing with someone I didn't get along with.
Amelia won't stop boasting about how caring Dante was toward her.
"Don’t worry, Miss Hen, your leg will be perfectly functional the next time you come for a checkup," I said after checking her vitals. "You just have to ensure that you watch out for the stairs next time."
She chuckled. "My goodness, you should've seen my embarrassment when I came here. I didn't even know how to tell the nurse that I fell on the stairs. I thought she'd judge me or say I'm getting old."
"Don't worry," I said, removing the IV fluid from her arm. "You're very young. And I will keep your secret about falling on the stairs."
She chuckled as I turned around and headed for the door. I even felt lighter than I had a few moments ago, and was looking forward to attending another patient when I saw them.
I stopped on my tracks and watched as Mason's Beta walked toward me with two scouts behind him. I quickly masked my scent and smiled.
"Gentlemen, how may I assist you?"
Noah didn't smile as he stopped before me. "You're requested to come with me to Sutherland for questioning," he said, and my stomach tightened.
I hadn't been to Silvercrest since they banished me as if I were nothing.
"We want to know how you came to know about the nightshade," he added.
