Chapter 40 Victor Critically Ill Again
No response.
Inside, there was dead silence.
The huge study was pitch black, with gusts of cold wind blowing through.
This eerie atmosphere lasted for who knows how long. Hayden turned his head, his eyes fixed on the tightly locked door, inching step by step toward it. Then, quick as lightning, he rushed out of the study and leaned against the door, gasping for breath.
It felt like he'd just survived a disaster.
He'd been in there for less than a minute, but he could already feel all the blood in his body freezing from the cold inside. If he'd stayed any longer, he would've died in there.
Too terrifying, too terrifying.
"Samuel, who on earth made Joshua angry? Joshua hasn't been this furious in ages." Thinking back to the scene of Joshua beating him up made him feel scared. The person who angered Joshua was probably already dead by now.
Samuel froze for a moment, not knowing what to say.
"Come on, tell me. Is the person who angered Joshua already dead?"
"No, she's fine, but Mr. Thomas is really upset."
"She?" Someone who could make Joshua this angry and still survive - he really wanted to meet this lucky person. "Who is it?"
"..."
"Come on, tell me, tell me."
Samuel couldn't resist Hayden's gossipy energy. His eyes darted around nervously, and he whispered mysteriously, "Ms. Davis!"
Hayden wiped the cold sweat from his forehead. "Ava?"
Ava had upset Joshua and made him this angry?
He'd been about to go in to talk about Ava. Thank God, thank God he hadn't said anything, otherwise...
He could really imagine Joshua chasing him with a knife.
"I think this matter isn't as important as my life. Let's wait until Joshua calms down."
Samuel's mouth twitched.
Joshua, where did your courage go?
"Something's wrong! Mr. Thomas had an episode and coughed up blood."
Hayden was about to head back to his room when he heard a servant's panicked cry from Victor's room on the second floor.
Joshua had somehow already come out of the study. Both their faces darkened at the same time, and they rushed toward Victor's room in unison.
Suddenly, everyone at the Thomas Villa was on high alert.
"Quick, quick, go notify Barry and Mia to come over, quick." Ursa was anxiously arranging everything in Victor's room.
The family doctor had arrived, and the servants were in a frantic rush.
The scene was chaotic.
The heart monitor let out a series of urgent alarms.
Hayden's steps paused as he entered the room. He frowned, turned around, and went out to call Ava.
Thunder rumbled outside - at some point, it had started pouring rain.
The thunder was loud. Ava quickly went to close the window.
Cleo was as afraid of thunder as she was. Ava tucked Finn and Cleo in, worried that Cleo wouldn't sleep well and would wake up crying if she couldn't find her. So she brought her laptop into their room to work.
Ava focused intently on her computer, creating a surgical plan for a patient, her slender fingers dancing across the keyboard. Just then, her phone rang with an unfamiliar number.
Ava quickly put it on silent, glanced at the sleeping Finn and Cleo - both children were sleeping soundly. Ava set down her laptop, picked up her phone, and tiptoed out of the room.
"Hello, who is this?" Ava answered the call while taking the opportunity to pour herself a glass of water, holding it as she drank.
"Ava, help."
"What's wrong?" Ava's grip on the phone tightened, her whole heart rising to her throat.
"Grandpa's had another episode for some reason, and the situation is very serious. Ava, please come quickly."
"What?" Ava's hand holding the water glass trembled, and the glass suddenly fell to the floor with a sharp shattering sound.
Ava was stunned for a moment, nervously glancing toward the bedroom. While grabbing her medical kit, she responded, "I'll be right there."
How could this happen? Victor's condition had been showing signs of improvement. If they'd been following her prescription accurately, there was no way such a serious episode could occur.
Ava hurriedly put on her shoes in the entryway. Finn opened the bedroom door, rubbing his eyes as he came out. Seeing Ava about to go out so late, he walked up worriedly and asked, "Mommy?"
"Baby, you're awake? Was I too loud? Did I wake you?"
Finn rubbed his eyes. "No, I woke up on my own. Mommy, where are you going?"
"I'm going to the Thomas Villa. An old grandfather who's very important to me is sick and needs me. Baby, can you be good at home and wait for me to come back?"
"The Thomas Villa? Daddy's house?"
Hearing that Ava was going to the Thomas Villa, Finn couldn't help but frown. From overhearing Ava and Isabella's conversation before, he'd gotten the impression that the Thomas family were bad people, just like Joshua.
"Yes." Ava crouched down to straighten Finn's pajamas, her gaze gentle. "Finn, Cleo is afraid of thunder. Can you watch over Cleo for me? I'll be back soon."
"Okay, Mommy, come back quickly. Finn will wait for you."
Ava didn't have time to say more to Finn. After a few quick instructions, she rushed out.
Finn obediently did as Ava said and went back to the room. He was about to lie back down when Cleo's soft crying caught his attention. Finn quickly went over to hold Cleo, touched her little face, and asked gently, "Cleo, what's wrong?"
Outside, the wind howled and rain poured down.
Cleo's small body curled up. Her little face was already red from crying, and she clutched her stuffed doll, sobbing softly, "Finn, where's Mommy? I'm scared."
"Cleo, don't cry, don't cry." Finn quickly wiped away Cleo's tears. "Cleo, don't be afraid. I'm here."
Finn climbed onto Cleo's pink little bed, his small body pulling Cleo into his arms as he comforted her softly, "Cleo wants to see Mommy, right?"
"Yes, Finn, where did Mommy go?"
"Mommy has something important to do. She went to Daddy's house. If Cleo wants to see Mommy, I have a way."
Cleo nestled in Finn's arms. Hearing that Finn had a way for her to see Mommy, she immediately looked up, her round eyes full of hope. "Finn, what's your way?"
