Chapter 488: Happily Ever After
Chapter 488: Happily Ever After
As the waltz ended, Emily thanked the diplomat and turned toward Charles.
"What were you two talking about?" She naturally slipped her arm through his.
"How stunning you look tonight." Charles glanced down at her, lips curving.
Emily's cheeks flushed deeper. She gave him a light punch.
Ace chuckled and shook his head. "I'll leave you two alone. Enjoy yourselves."
He turned and headed toward another cluster of waiting dignitaries. Charles took Emily's hand and led her to the center of the dance floor. The orchestra shifted seamlessly into a new piece—the classic Por Una Cabeza.
"Mr. Windsor," Emily gazed up at him, eyes glinting with mischief, "may I have this dance?"
Charles gave a small bow, extending his hand in invitation. "The honor would be mine, Ms. Johnson."
He drew her close, one hand at her waist. She rested hers on his shoulder. Together they glided into the music. Their steps weren't elaborate, but they moved as one—every spin, every turn flowed like they'd rehearsed a thousand times.
In truth, over the past three months, as Charles recovered enough to stand and walk, they had practiced. In his hospital room. In the rehab gym. Stolen moments, secret rehearsals. Charles had promised: once he could finish a full dance without collapsing, he'd bring her here. To this gala. And in front of everyone, he'd dance the first—and most important—dance with her.
The music swelled, tender and winding. The lights bathed them in gold. Charles spun her slowly across the floor, never once taking his eyes off her face. He watched his own reflection in her eyes, the happiness playing at the corners of her mouth. Every agonizing second of the past three months—the pain, the struggle, the rehabilitation, every fall and every time he forced himself back up—suddenly felt worth it.
"Emily." He murmured her name during a pause between spins.
"Yes?"
"There's something I need to tell you."
Emily's heart skipped. She looked into Charles's eyes—so deep, so sincere—and felt it coming.
The music climbed toward its crescendo. Charles guided her through one final, sweeping turn, then brought them gently to a stop. Around them, other dancers halted. The orchestra fell silent.
The entire ballroom held its breath.
Charles released her hand. He stepped back. And then, before a room full of witnesses, he dropped to one knee.
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Emily covered her mouth. Tears instantly filled her eyes.
From his pocket, Charles withdrew a small velvet box—midnight blue. He opened it. Inside: a diamond ring. The center stone wasn't ostentatious, but its cut was flawless, refracting brilliant light in all directions. Around it, a delicate circle of sapphires glittered like stars orbiting the moon.
"Emily. I've said your name a thousand times. And every single time, I think it's the most beautiful sound in the world."
Tears slipped down Emily's cheeks and hit the polished floor.
"These past three months, lying in that hospital bed, I kept asking myself—if I'd died, what would I regret most? And I knew. My biggest regret would be not telling you how much I love you. Not giving you a real promise. A real home."
His voice roughened, but remained steady.
"We've been through life and death together. I've seen you at your lowest. You've seen me at mine. We've fought. We've doubted each other. We've hurt each other. But every single time, you chose to believe in me. To stay by my side."
"When everyone said I'd lost my mind, you said you'd go crazy with me. When I thought I was dying, you said we'd die together. Emily, the best thing I ever did was meet you. The worst thing I ever did was make you wait this long. Was divorcing you."
He raised the ring, his words precise and solemn:
"Emily, will you give me another chance to love you? Will you marry me again? Will you give me that honor?"
The ballroom was silent. Every eye fixed on them. Every breath held.
Emily's face was wet with tears. She looked at Charles—kneeling, ring in hand, eyes overflowing with tenderness and hope—and her entire world condensed into this single moment.
She thought of the first time she'd seen him. Delirious, yet somehow still gentle.
She thought of how awkwardly he'd been kind to her, refusing to admit it.
She thought of him sick, clinging to her like a child, saying it hurt.
She thought of him walking into danger again and again—for her. Crawling back from death's door—for her.
She thought of the rooftop. His breath fading as he whispered I'm sorry. I can't take you to Lumaria.
All those memories. All that life and death. All that tenderness and all those tears. It all led here. To this man. The man she loved so deeply she'd trade anything for his peace and happiness.
Emily slowly extended her hand.
"Yes."
Cheers exploded. Applause thundered. Whistles pierced the air. Camera flashes went off like fireworks, immortalizing the moment.
Charles's eyes reddened. His hands trembled as he slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly. As if it had always belonged there.
He rose. Pulled her into his arms. And kissed her.
The kiss was tender and lingering—full of relief, full of joy, full of every promise yet to come. Emily looped her arms around his neck and kissed him back, tears slipping between their joined lips—salty, but sweet.
The entire room erupted. Even the orchestra resumed, launching into a jubilant wedding march.
When the kiss finally ended, Charles took Emily's hand. Together, they walked through a storm of confetti and blessings, out of the ballroom and into the night.
The breeze was cool. The stars unusually bright.
He stopped. Drew her close. Pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"Emily," his voice was low and tender, "please take care of me for the rest of my life."
Emily tilted her face up. Tears and starlight mingled in her eyes, but her smile outshone them both.
"Yes," she whispered. "Mr. Windsor, please take care of me, too."
In the distance, the city lights stretched out like a fallen galaxy.
And their story—their real story—was only just beginning.
