Chapter 14: The Queen Regent's Smile
POV: Nyra
I'm escorted to the throne room by guards who won't meet my eyes.
That alone tells me this isn't good.
The massive doors open, and I'm pushed inside. The room is nearly empty this time. No crowd of nobles. No court observers. Just the Queen Regent sitting on her throne, bathed in afternoon sunlight streaming through tall windows.
And one servant standing beside her, holding a silver tray.
The guards deposit me in the center of the room and retreat, closing the doors behind them.
Leaving me alone with her.
The Queen Regent rises from her throne with practiced grace. She's beautiful in the way sharp things are beautiful. All elegant lines and cold perfection. Her dress is deep purple silk, her hair arranged in an elaborate style that probably took hours.
She smiles when she sees me.
The warmth in that smile feels rehearsed. Practiced. Like something she's perfected over years of courtly manipulation.
"Nyra," she says, my name sounding strange in her refined accent. "Thank you for coming."
As if I had a choice.
I don't respond. Just stand there in my plain servant's dress, barefoot on cold marble, waiting to find out what fresh horror she has planned.
She descends the steps from the throne platform and approaches me slowly, her smile never wavering.
"I wanted to speak with you privately," she says. "Away from the noise and chaos of court. To express my personal gratitude for your service."
Service.
The word tastes like ash.
"You have been invaluable to the crown," she continues, circling me slowly like a predator sizing up prey. "Your dedication. Your endurance. Your willingness to sacrifice for the stability of the realm."
She stops in front of me, her eyes searching my face.
"You should be proud of what you've endured," she says softly. "Not many could survive what you have. Not many would have the strength."
I want to laugh at the absurdity of it. Want to scream at her that pride isn't what you feel when you're property. That strength isn't what keeps you alive when you're being bled dry in the dark.
But I stay silent.
"Which is why," the Queen Regent continues, her tone shifting to something almost conspiratorial, "I wanted to offer you an honor. A reward for your years of loyal service."
An honor.
From the woman who ordered me cut open. Who approved my classification as property. Who just put me on a disposal list.
"What kind of honor?" I ask, my voice flat.
Her smile widens.
"Relocation," she says. "Closer to the heir. Better accommodations. Easier access when he needs you. No more punishment cells or servant corridors. A room of your own in the royal wing."
She makes it sound like a gift. Like she's doing me a favor.
I don't believe a word of it.
"Why would you do that?" I ask.
"Because the heir has made it clear that you matter to him," she says simply. "And despite the... complications... of his public claim, I recognize that your presence has value. Why not make you more comfortable while you continue to serve?"
Her voice is gentle. Reasonable. The tone of someone offering a genuine kindness.
But her eyes are calculating. Cold.
I see through the lie immediately.
Relocation closer to Caelum isn't about making me comfortable. It's about control. Keeping me where they can watch me. Where they can manage exactly when and how I'm used. Where I can't slip away or hide or be reached by people like Eryx.
It's a prettier cage, but it's still a cage.
My gaze drifts past her to the small table beside the throne.
A silver needle rests there on a velvet cushion, gleaming softly in the sunlight.
The kind of needle used for injections. For sedatives. For chemical compliance.
My blood runs cold.
The Queen Regent follows my gaze and her smile softens into something almost motherly.
"Of course," she says, "with better accommodations come certain... requirements. For your own safety and the safety of those around you."
She gestures to the needle.
"Nothing invasive. Just a small measure to help you adjust. To keep you calm and compliant during the transition. To ensure you don't become overwhelmed by the change in your circumstances."
Sedation.
Control.
Silence.
She's offering to drug me. To keep me docile and manageable while they decide what to ultimately do with me.
The Queen Regent steps closer, her voice dropping to something gentle and sharp at once.
"You must understand, Nyra, that everything we do is for the stability of the realm. The heir's condition requires careful management. Your role in that management is important, yes, but it cannot come at the cost of order."
She reaches out and touches my cheek with cold fingers.
"Don't forget your place behind the throne," she says softly. "You exist to serve. To support. To stabilize. Not to disrupt. Not to challenge. Not to become a complication yourself."
Her hand drops away.
"Stability requires obedience," she continues. "Gratitude requires silence. And cooperation requires trust. Do you understand?"
I understand perfectly.
She's telling me to accept the needle. Accept the relocation. Accept whatever they decide to do with me without question or resistance.
To be grateful for the cage they're offering instead of fighting for freedom.
The ledger page burns against my skin where I've hidden it. Proof that their kindness is a lie. That relocation means disposal and the needle means compliance until they're ready to get rid of me completely.
Seven days, the disposal schedule said.
This is their way of making sure I don't cause problems during those seven days.
The Queen Regent gestures to the servant holding the tray.
"It will only take a moment," she says. "A small injection. You'll barely feel it. And then we can move you to your new accommodations and you can rest. Properly rest, for the first time in years."
The servant approaches with the tray. The needle gleams, filled with clear liquid that could be anything. Sedative. Poison. Something to make me forget or comply or break.
I look at the needle.
Then at the Queen Regent.
Then I make a choice.
"No," I say quietly.
The word drops into the silence like a stone into still water.
The Queen Regent blinks, her smile faltering for just a moment.
"I'm sorry?" she says. "I don't think I heard you correctly."
"No," I repeat, louder this time. "I don't want the injection. I don't want the relocation. I don't want any of it."
The servant freezes, uncertain. The Queen Regent's expression shifts, the warmth draining away like water from a broken cup.
"You're refusing?" she asks, her tone still controlled but harder now.
"Yes."
"You understand that this isn't a request," she says carefully. "This is an order. An honor being bestowed upon you. Refusal is not an option."
"Then it's not really an honor, is it?" I say.
The Queen Regent's eyes narrow.
"You're being given an opportunity that most defectives would kill for," she says, her voice sharpening. "Better conditions. Closer proximity to the heir. Recognition of your value. And you're refusing it?"
"I'm refusing the needle," I clarify. "I don't trust what's in it. I don't trust your kindness. And I don't believe for one second that this relocation is about making my life better."
Her mask cracks completely.
The gentle smile disappears, replaced by cold fury that she no longer bothers to hide.
"How dare you," she says quietly. "How dare you question my intentions. How dare you refuse a direct order from your queen."
"You're not my queen," I say, the words escaping before I can stop them. "I'm property, remember? Property doesn't have queens. It has owners."
The silence that follows is absolute.
The Queen Regent stares at me with an expression I've never seen before. Not anger, exactly. Something colder. More dangerous.
"I see," she says softly.
She turns to the servant.
"Leave us," she orders.
The servant bows and exits quickly, taking the tray and needle with them.
When we're alone, the Queen Regent circles back to her throne and sits, regarding me with the expression of someone who's just realized they've miscalculated.
"You've become defiant," she observes. "The heir's influence, I assume. His foolish claim has given you ideas above your station."
"I don't have ideas," I say. "I just don't want to be drugged."
"What you want is irrelevant," she says. "What matters is what the crown needs. And right now, the crown needs you compliant and controlled."
"Why?" I ask. "If you're planning to dispose of me anyway, why does it matter if I'm compliant?"
Her eyes flash.
"You've seen the disposal list," she says. It's not a question.
"Yes."
"And yet you stand here, refusing cooperation. Refusing the mercy I'm offering you. Do you have any idea how foolish that is?"
"It's not mercy if it comes with a needle full of sedative," I say.
The Queen Regent stands abruptly.
"Fine," she says, her voice hard as stone. "If you won't accept cooperation willingly, we'll ensure it through other means."
She walks toward me, stopping just out of arm's reach.
"You will be restrained," she says. "Like the heir. Chains and silver and ice stones to keep you weak and manageable. You will be kept in isolation until the disposal date arrives. No contact with the heir. No contact with anyone. Just you and the dark and the knowledge that you brought this on yourself."
Her smile returns, but there's nothing warm about it now.
"Then you'll be restrained like him," she says.
