Chapter 2 The Price of Desperation
SERINA POV
I woke up in a puddle of my own blood.
My head throbbed where the enforcer had hit me. For a second, I couldn't remember where I was. Then it all came rushing back—the execution notice, the enforcers breaking down our door, Tym escaping through the gap.
Tym.
I forced myself upright, biting back a scream as my vision swam. The shack was empty except for broken furniture and scorch marks on the walls where magic had burned. How long had I been unconscious? Minutes? Hours?
I stumbled outside into darkness. Night had fallen completely. The street was eerily quiet—everyone hiding behind locked doors, terrified they'd be next.
A small sound came from the alley beside our shack.
"Tym?" I whispered.
My brother emerged from the shadows, his face streaked with tears. "I couldn't leave you. I waited and waited, and when the enforcers finally left, I came back."
Relief and anger crashed through me in equal measure. "I told you to run!"
"You told me to survive." Tym grabbed my arm, steadying me when I swayed. "I can't do that without you."
A shout echoed from three streets over—enforcers calling to each other, searching. We had minutes at most before they circled back.
"The Shadowmarket," I said. "It's our only chance."
Tym's eyes widened. "Sera, those people are dangerous—"
"So are the enforcers, and they definitely want us dead." I pulled him deeper into the alley, my mind racing through the safest route. "I know someone there. Nyx. They trade in information and favors. If anyone knows how to save you, it's them."
We moved through the Rust Quarter like ghosts, staying in shadows, freezing whenever we heard voices. I'd spent my whole life learning which streets to avoid, which guards could be bribed, which doors led to escape routes. Now all that stolen knowledge kept us alive.
Twice we nearly ran straight into patrol units. Once, Tym's coughing almost gave us away—I clamped my hand over his mouth until the guards passed, feeling his blood soak into my palm.
The entrance to the Shadowmarket was hidden beneath an abandoned temple—the kind of place even enforcers avoided after dark. I pushed aside a broken statue, revealing stone steps descending into blackness.
"Stay close," I whispered. "Don't talk to anyone. Don't touch anything. And whatever happens, don't let go of my hand."
Underground, the Shadowmarket buzzed with dangerous life. Torches flickered along tunnel walls, casting shadows over people who sold things the Council declared illegal—forbidden herbs, stolen magic artifacts, information that could get you killed. The air smelled like smoke and secrets.
Eyes tracked us as we moved deeper. A girl my age with scales tattooed up her arms. A man missing half his face, magical burns still glowing faintly. People who'd been broken by the Council and rebuilt themselves into something sharper.
People like I might become, if I survived.
"There." I spotted Nyx's stall in the deepest corner, marked by a lantern that burned with purple flame. Nyx themselves sat cross-legged behind a table covered in odd trinkets, their face hidden by a hood.
We approached. Nyx looked up, and I saw obsidian-dark skin and white hair that seemed to glow in the torchlight. Their age was impossible to guess—they could have been twenty or two hundred.
"Serina Ashwell." Nyx's voice was smooth as poison. "Twice in one year. You must be desperate."
"My brother." I pushed Tym forward. "The Council marked him for execution. They moved up the date—they're coming for him tonight. I need something to save him. Anything."
Nyx studied Tym with unnerving intensity. "Magical contamination. I can smell it on him." They leaned forward. "Do you know what contamination really means, little thief?"
"It means he's sick and the Council wants him dead."
"No." Nyx's smile was sharp. "It means his magic is waking up naturally, without Council permission. The ranking system is designed to suppress that awakening. When someone breaks through anyway..." They gestured at Tym. "The Council calls it contamination and murders them to hide the truth."
My world tilted. "What truth?"
"That everyone has magic. The Council just locks it away in most people to stay in power." Nyx tapped their fingers on the table. "Your brother is special, Serina. His potential is massive. That's why they want him dead so badly."
Hope surged through me. "Then you can help him? You can fix—"
"I can't do anything." Nyx cut me off. "His awakening is too far along. He'll be dead in days even without the enforcers." They paused. "But there is one option. Dangerous. Probably fatal. Definitely illegal even by Shadowmarket standards."
"Tell me."
"The Shrine of Forgotten Gods. It's been sealed for a thousand years, but I can give you a key." Nyx pulled out a small vial of something dark and liquid. "Blood-magic. It'll open the shrine doors. Inside, you can make a contract with... something old. Something powerful. Trade your greatest fear for the power to save what you love most."
"That's it?" It sounded too easy. "What's the catch?"
"The catch is that the shrine was sealed for a reason. The things inside aren't human anymore. They'll twist your contract, corrupt your desires, take more than you're willing to give." Nyx's eyes glittered. "And there's my price. If I give you this key, you owe me three favors. Any time, any place, no questions asked. You'll be mine to command whenever I call."
Tym grabbed my arm. "Sera, no. This is insane. We'll find another way—"
"There is no other way!" I turned to him, seeing Mom's face in his terrified eyes. Seeing another funeral pyre. "I'm not letting you die like she did."
"But you could die instead!"
"Better me than you."
The words came out automatically. I'd been saying them my whole life—better me than Tym, better me than Mom, better me than anyone else. I was nothing. Everyone else mattered more.
Tym's face crumpled. "You matter too, Sera. When will you understand that?"
My throat tightened, but I turned back to Nyx. "I accept. Give me the key."
"Excellent." Nyx slid the vial across the table. "The shrine is in the Old Quarter, beneath the fountain that doesn't flow. Go at midnight—not a minute before, not a minute after. The doors only open then." They leaned back, satisfied. "Oh, and Serina? Don't waste time making plans or saying goodbye. Once you enter, you'll have exactly one hour before the shrine claims you as payment instead."
Ice flooded my veins. "You didn't mention that part."
"You didn't ask." Nyx's smile widened. "The shrine always gets paid. Make your contract fast, or become part of the walls. Good luck, little thief. You'll need it."
I grabbed the vial, pulling Tym toward the exit. My hands shook as I checked the time—two hours until midnight.
Two hours to save my brother or die trying.
We were halfway to the stairs when Tym stopped dead, his whole body going rigid.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
He turned to me, his gray eyes suddenly unfocused, seeing something I couldn't. When he spoke, his voice sounded distant and strange.
"Sera, I just saw something. A vision." His hand tightened on mine until it hurt. "In the shrine, you're going to wake up something terrible. Something that's been sleeping and dreaming of revenge for a thousand years."
"I don't care what—"
"It has wings made of shadow and eyes like burning gold." Tym's voice dropped to a terrified whisper. "And when it wakes up, Sera, it's going to bind itself to you. Forever."
