Chapter 74: Lurking Nearby
It was already 4 p.m. when George and Ellie finally left. They were heading to Ellie's parents' place to have dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Baker and discuss the relocation and job transfer.
As expected, Mr. Baker refused outright when it came to the early retirement and relocation. George couldn't bring it up at this moment, so he followed Ellie's lead.
But Mr. Baker was stubborn.
Even though he knew that this job transfer and relocation was to avoid retaliation and danger, he still wasn't willing to go along with it.
"Come on, it's not that serious. Look at it from a different perspective. They may take the risk to find you guys, but why would they take the risk to find us old folks?" George chuckled.
"Dad, you shouldn't say things like that. It's not about being scared, but rather about being cautious. Besides, it's not like there's no place for them to live over there. If we live together, we can take care of each other, right?"
"I think Ellie is right. It's better to be safe than sorry. And George mentioned that he could pull some strings to help you get early retirement due to illness. It would only be a couple of years less, which wouldn't have a big impact."
Ellie's mother worriedly added.
Mr. Baker frowned and shook his head lightly.
He picked up his wine glass, clearly not wanting to say more. The three of them exchanged glances, and George also shook his head lightly, indicating that they should leave it at that for today.
No one mentioned it again, but everyone had something on their minds, and the atmosphere became somewhat oppressive.
After finishing the meal, Ellie and George didn't stay long. They knew that Ellie's father would probably want to talk to Ellie's mother to discuss something, and there were things they couldn't say in front of them, so they decided to leave.
On the way home, George noticed that Ellie was still frowning, even more anxious than him.
He smiled and reassured her, "Elders are hesitant to leave a place they've lived in for decades, not only because of retirement. Give him some time to think."
"My mom said the same thing, but... we're leaving in a week. The procedures for my dad will also take some time, and he may not agree."
If it was before, she might not have been so worried. Just like what her father said, those people would also be afraid of being caught. It wouldn't be worth it to risk everything for their ignorant elders.
But now she knew what her husband did for a living. The person who could target him was not an ordinary criminal but someone who was willing to risk their life!
"Don't worry about the procedures. They're just minor matters. As for my dad... if he really doesn't want to, we can trouble the bureau to inform the criminal investigation team to temporarily not withdraw the protected personnel."
"But that's not a long-term solution. They can't just leave their regular work and guard my parents." Her words stuttered.
"Whether it's us, the police, or the detectives, our fundamental job is protection. Why do we catch bad guys? Isn't it a form of protection too? It's obvious that someone needs protection now. How is that not part of our regular work?"
..." How did she not know that he had such eloquence before? Well, she realized recently that her husband was really charismatic.
He said everything that left her speechless! "Furthermore..." George turned to look at her.
"Once you have a child, you can coax them into accepting the situation. They can adapt to the environment, but if they want to hold a child, they can only turn to you, right?"
Ellie's eyes lit up. "You're right! Why didn't I think of that?"
"So, there's no need to worry. It's all temporary, and we can be flexible with the conditions." The only thing to fear is if the conditions don't allow it...
Luckily, it has been determined that Mr. King's only interest is what is in the Pharaoh's tomb, not him.
As for Isaac, who harbors animosity towards him and is more familiar with the Bureau, it is clear that he is not in cahoots with Mr. King.
Now he has messed things up again, which means not only are they chasing him, but Mr. King's side will not let him go either.
There are limited options for someone caught in such a predicament and surrounded on all sides, only him... Although he doesn't know why Isaac holds animosity towards him or what his intentions are, the things he can do alone are very limited.
Either he continues to hide without coming out, or he obtains what Mr. King wants, which means risking another encounter with him.
As the saying goes, a cunning rabbit has three burrows, and someone as adept at disguises and cunning as him has likely arranged another hiding place earlier, waiting for the next opportunity.
Especially with the feeling of being watched when he returned home yesterday, he believes that Isaac has already been lurking nearby, waiting for a chance...
