Chapter 50: Fifty
Raven's P.O.V.
The late afternoon sun streamed through the windows of Elara’s study, casting long golden rays across the room. I sat in one of the plush armchairs, my hands clenched tightly in my lap as I waited for Carden’s mother to finish reading through a set of old scrolls. The silence between us felt thick, filled with unspoken thoughts and worries. I hadn’t wanted to come to her like this, not with my heart so heavy, but I needed someone to talk to—someone who might understand.
Elara was strong, wise, and she cared deeply for Carden. If anyone could help me understand him, it was her. And right now, I was at a loss.
I had seen the way Carden had been acting lately, the way he’d grown distant, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something—or someone—he wasn’t telling me about. Deep down, I knew it had to do with Aria. The tension between them was palpable, even though neither of them had ever said anything to me directly.
But that didn’t make it any easier to bear.
Finally, Elara set down the scrolls and looked up at me, her sharp eyes studying my face. “You’re quiet today, Raven,” she said softly. “What’s on your mind?”
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to start. Elara was intimidating in her own way—her calm authority, the way she seemed to see through everything. But there was also a gentleness to her, a warmth that made her easy to talk to, once you got past the initial fear of opening up.
“I’m worried,” I admitted, my voice quieter than I intended. “About Carden.”
Elara’s brow furrowed, and she folded her hands neatly in front of her. “Go on,” she prompted, her tone encouraging.
I sighed, staring down at my hands. “He’s been… different lately. Distant. I feel like he’s pulling away from me, and I don’t know why. I’ve tried talking to him, but it feels like there’s something he’s not saying—something he doesn’t want me to know.”
Elara nodded thoughtfully, her gaze never leaving mine. “And you think this has to do with Aria.”
It wasn’t a question. Elara was perceptive, and she knew exactly what had been weighing on me since the day Carden and I first started drifting apart.
I bit my lip, nodding slowly. “I think so. I don’t have proof, but I’ve seen the way he looks at her. The way he avoids talking about her, as if she’s this unspoken presence between us. I know they have a history, but I thought… I thought he’d moved on.”
Elara’s eyes softened as she leaned forward slightly. “Carden and Aria have always had a complicated relationship,” she said gently. “But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for you, Raven. Sometimes, love is messy and uncertain, but it doesn’t mean it’s not real.”
I swallowed, my heart heavy with the weight of her words. “What if I’m not enough?” I asked quietly, voicing the fear that had been eating away at me for weeks. “What if he never lets go of her?”
Elara reached out, placing a hand on mine. “You are enough, Raven. Never doubt that. But you have to understand that love isn’t about who is more or less. It’s about timing, about connection. Carden has been through a lot, and his heart has been torn in different directions. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t care for you, or that you aren’t important to him.”
I felt tears prick at my eyes, and I blinked them back, determined not to break down in front of her. “But how do I make him see that? How do I make him realize that I’m here for him, that I’m not going anywhere?”
Elara’s expression softened, and she gave me a small, encouraging smile. “Patience, my dear. You can’t force someone to love you, but you can show them why they should. You’ve been strong, supportive, and loyal—those are the qualities that Carden needs in his life right now. He’s caught between the past and the present, but that doesn’t mean the future is set in stone.”
I took a shaky breath, feeling a small spark of hope flicker inside me. “So, what do I do? How do I get him to let me in?”
Elara leaned back in her chair, her eyes thoughtful as she considered my question. “The key with Carden is trust. He’s been hurt, not just by Aria, but by the weight of his responsibilities as Alpha. He carries a burden that most people don’t see. If you want to be with him, you have to show him that you’re not just there for the good moments—you’re there for the hard ones too. You have to be the person he can lean on when everything else is falling apart.”
I nodded slowly, letting her words sink in. “I want to be that for him,” I said softly. “But it’s hard, knowing that part of his heart still belongs to someone else.”
Elara gave me a sympathetic smile. “Love isn’t about erasing the past. It’s about building something new. If Carden truly cares for you—and I believe he does—then in time, he’ll let go of whatever is holding him back. But you need to be patient. You need to give him space to figure things out, while also showing him that you’re here, that you’re not going to run at the first sign of trouble.”
I chewed on my lip, thinking about her advice. Patience. Trust. It all sounded so simple, but in reality, it felt like the hardest thing in the world. Still, Elara had a point. Carden had been through so much, and maybe part of the reason he was pulling away was because he didn’t trust himself—because he was scared of hurting me, scared of repeating the past.
“Do you think he’ll ever choose me?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
Elara’s eyes softened, and she gave me a reassuring smile. “I think that Carden is capable of great love, but he needs to feel secure in that love. He’s still learning to trust again, and that takes time. But if you’re willing to be patient, if you’re willing to show him that you’re here for the long haul, then I believe he will.”
I nodded, feeling a sense of resolve settle over me. I had known from the beginning that loving Carden wouldn’t be easy. He was complicated, guarded, and his heart had been scarred by the past. But I wasn’t willing to give up on him. Not yet.
“Thank you, Elara,” I said, my voice steady. “I needed to hear that.”
She smiled, squeezing my hand gently. “You’re a strong woman, Raven. Don’t forget that. And don’t underestimate your worth. Carden may be lost right now, but in time, I believe he’ll find his way back to you.
I nodded, feeling a flicker of hope ignite in my chest. Elara’s words had a way of grounding me, of reminding me of my own strength. Loving someone like Carden wasn’t easy. It was messy, frustrating, and painful at times, but I wasn’t ready to walk away. Not yet. I had to believe there was something worth fighting for.
Elara gave me a small smile, her eyes warm. “Remember, Raven, the strongest bonds are forged in fire. You and Carden have a long road ahead, but don’t doubt your place by his side. If you truly want him, show him that you’re there for all of it—the good, the bad, and the ugly.”
I nodded. “I will. I won’t give up on him.”
Elara’s smile widened slightly, and she reached out to touch my arm, her voice gentle but firm. “And don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. Loving someone like Carden can be draining, but you need to keep your strength. Don’t lose yourself in the process.”
I took a deep breath, letting her words settle over me. She was right. I couldn’t let my love for Carden consume me to the point where I lost sight of who I was. I had to stay strong, not just for him, but for myself.
“Thank you, Elara,” I said, standing up. “I appreciate your advice. It means a lot to me.”
She nodded, her expression softening. “You’re welcome, Raven. I’m here if you ever need to talk again. Carden may be my son, but I’ve seen the way you care for him. That’s not something to be taken lightly.”
With that, I said my goodbyes and left her study. As I made my way back to my own cabin, my mind raced with thoughts of everything Elara had said.
Patience. Trust. Show him I’m here for the long haul.
It wasn’t going to be easy, but I was determined to follow her advice. I wouldn’t push Carden or force him into anything he wasn’t ready for, but I’d be there—steadily, quietly, waiting for him to come to me.
But underneath that resolve, there was still a flicker of uncertainty—a question that wouldn’t leave me alone no matter how much I tried to silence it.
Could I really win his heart when part of it still seemed to belong to someone else?
