Chapter 161: # Chapter 161
Kira's POV
I checked my equipment for the third time as our convoy of black SUVs cut through the darkness. My hands trembled slightly—from exhaustion or adrenaline, I couldn't tell anymore.
"You should eat something," Rocco said from the seat beside me, his voice low enough that Marcus, our driver, couldn't hear from the front.
I shook my head, eyes fixed on the tablet displaying the facility schematics. "Can't. Stomach's in knots."
The road grew rougher as we ventured deeper into the forest. Headlights from the other two vehicles flickered behind us through the trees. Twenty of our best people, divided into three teams, all risking their lives tonight. The responsibility sat heavy on my shoulders.
"Rebecca, any update on satellite imaging?" I asked through the comm device in my ear.
"Four main entrances, all heavily guarded," her voice crackled back. "Western guard rotation shows a three-minute gap every half hour. And Kira... energy readings from the central chamber are off the charts. Whatever Ethan's building in there, it's almost operational."
I exchanged a glance with Rocco, whose jaw tightened. Time wasn't on our side.
"Approaching drop point," Marcus announced, slowing the vehicle.
We stopped in a small clearing about a kilometer from the facility. As we exited the vehicles, team members gathered around me, checking weapons and adjusting equipment.
Andy approached, his face half-hidden in shadow. "What's the plan?"
I pulled up the facility map on my tablet. "We split as planned. Andy, you lead Alpha team through that western entrance. Your primary goal is creating a diversion and securing their data servers."
He nodded, checking his tranquilizer gun. "And you?"
"Rocco and I take the team through these ventilation shafts," I pointed to the northwest corner of the schematics. "They lead directly to the central lab area. If Ethan's conducting his ritual there, that's where we need to be."
"Gamma team maintains perimeter security and extraction routes," I continued. "Remember, many guards may be under mind control. Non-lethal takedowns only—these could be innocent werewolves."
As team members dispersed for final preparations, Andy pulled me aside. "Those ventilation shafts look narrow. You sure that's the best way in?"
"It's the least monitored access point," I replied. "We need stealth more than comfort."
He frowned, glancing at Rocco who was checking his equipment nearby. "I don't like you going in with just him as backup."
"This isn't about personal feelings, Andy," I said quietly. "It's about who has the skills for which job. You're better at tactical diversion. Rocco and I can move silently."
Andy sighed, then squeezed my uninjured shoulder. "Just... be careful in there. Something feels off about this whole setup."
"I know," I admitted. "But we're out of options. If Ethan completes this ritual..."
"He won't," Andy said firmly. "We'll stop him."
We moved through the forest in formation, using the trees for cover. As we approached the facility perimeter, I got my first real look at our target. Unlike the abandoned warehouse, this place was modern and clearly operational—a sleek, partially buried complex with reinforced walls and surveillance equipment at every corner.
Rocco and I led the team to the northwestern fence line. Using wire cutters, we created an opening and slipped through one by one. The ventilation access point was visible on the side of the building, across twenty meters of exposed ground.
"Cover us," I whispered to two team members, then nodded to Rocco. "Ready?"
We sprinted across the open space. I reached the vent first, working quickly to remove the grate while Rocco kept watch. The opening was narrower than it had appeared on the schematics—barely wide enough for an adult.
"Ladies first," Rocco murmured, the ghost of his old smile flickering across his face.
I squeezed into the metal shaft, cool air raising goosebumps on my skin. The confined space made my heart rate spike, but I pushed forward. Rocco followed close behind, with two other team members trailing us. The rest of the team would maintain position outside.
The ventilation system was a maze of metal tunnels. I navigated using the memorized layout, pausing occasionally to listen for sounds from below. As we approached a junction, voices drifted up through a grate.
"Neural synchronization matrix at 94% capacity," a clinical voice said. "Initiating final calibration sequence."
"And the subjects?" another voice asked.
"Stable. The conditioning is progressing as expected."
I exchanged a glance with Rocco, whose eyes had darkened. We continued forward, even more cautiously now.
After what felt like an eternity of cramped crawling, we reached a larger junction with a view into what appeared to be a central laboratory. What I saw through the grate made my blood run cold.
The laboratory was massive, with a central platform surrounded by ten circular stations. Each station contained what looked like a medical chair with restraints and neural interface equipment. Workers in lab coats moved between stations, checking readings and adjusting equipment.
"Andy," I whispered into my comm. "What's your status?"
"Inside the west wing," he replied quietly. "Heavy security, but we're advancing. Found some kind of server room. Rebecca's accessing it remotely now."
"We've located what looks like a ritual chamber," I reported. "Multiple stations set up in a circle. This has to be where Ethan plans to conduct the consciousness transfers."
Rebecca's voice cut in. "The data confirms it. Each station is designed to connect to a specific Alpha's neural patterns. He's planning to override multiple Pack leaders simultaneously."
I scanned the room more carefully, my stomach dropping when I noticed a countdown timer on the main display: 45:00 minutes and ticking down.
"We need to move faster," I said urgently. "There's a countdown active."
We continued through the ventilation system until we reached another grate overlooking a heavily secured section. The sight below made me gasp.
A row of transparent cells lined the wall, each containing a single occupant. I recognized several of them—influential Pack Alphas and Elders from across the country. All appeared to be in a semi-conscious state, connected to medical equipment with vacant, unfocused eyes.
"Oh my god," I whispered. "He's already captured them."
Rocco's face hardened as he surveyed the imprisoned leaders. "If Ethan controls them all..."
"He controls the entire werewolf society," I finished grimly. I quickly took photos with a small camera and transmitted them to Rebecca. "Can you identify them?"
After a moment, Rebecca confirmed: "They match the target list from the encrypted files. He's assembled all his primary targets."
Suddenly, an alarm blared through the facility, making us freeze.
"Alpha team, report!" I demanded into my comm.
Andy's voice came through, punctuated by the sound of gunfire. "We've been compromised! Security was waiting for us—it's a trap!"
"Fall back to extraction point," I ordered.
"Too many hostiles," Andy replied, his breathing heavy. "We're pinned down in the east wing."
Rocco and I exchanged a quick look. My mind raced through options, none of them good.
"Change of plans," I decided. "Rocco, take half of Beta team to support Andy. I'll continue to the control room with the rest."
"That's too dangerous," Rocco argued, his eyes flashing. "You're not going alone."
"We don't have a choice," I countered. "Someone has to stop that countdown, and someone has to help Andy."
After a moment's hesitation, Rocco nodded. "Be careful. These aren't normal guards we're dealing with."
We separated at the next junction, Rocco and two team members heading toward the east wing while I continued toward the central control room with the remaining two.
The ventilation shaft eventually led to a maintenance room, where we exited and proceeded cautiously through the now-alerted facility. We encountered two guards, whom we quickly subdued with tranquilizer darts.
Using the facility map as a guide, we made our way toward the central control room. The sounds of combat echoed from distant sections of the building, growing more intense by the minute.
Finally, we reached an observation platform overlooking the main control room. Below, I could see the complete ritual setup—the circular platform, the connected stations, and at the center, a sophisticated control console glowing with eerie blue light. The countdown timer now showed 10:03 and decreasing.
And there, standing at the central console, was Ethan.
"Prepare for final sequence," he announced, his voice carrying throughout the chamber. "The new era begins in ten minutes."
I signaled my team members to hold position while I moved closer to the edge of the platform, drawing my tranquilizer gun and taking careful aim at Ethan.
Just as I was about to fire, Ethan looked up directly at my position, a smile spreading across his face.
"I know you're there, Kira," he called out, his voice echoing in the large chamber. "Why don't you join us? After all, you're just in time to witness history being made."
My heart froze as his eyes locked with mine, and I realized we'd walked right into his trap.
