Chapter 250

Chapter 250
Lynette's POV

The battlefield stank of blood and victory.

I stood over Aldrich's corpse, my hand still dripping. Around me, wolves were shifting back to human form. Cheering. Howling. Celebrating like we'd just won the fucking lottery.

Maybe we had.

Kael's arms tightened around me.

"Alpha." Cole's voice cut through the noise.

I turned. My beta looked like shit—covered in dirt and blood, favoring his ribs. But his eyes were clear. Focused.

"Yeah?"

He glanced around at the celebrating pack. At Kael standing beside me. At the bodies littering the ground.

"What now?" His voice was quiet. Almost lost.

I knew that tone. I'd heard it in my own head plenty of times over the past five years.

What the fuck do I do now that the war is over?

"Walk with me," I said.

Kael's hand slipped from my waist.

We walked to the edge of the battlefield. Away from the noise. The morning sun was climbing higher, turning everything gold.

Pretty. If you ignored all the corpses.

"You did good today," I said.

Cole snorted. "I did my job."

"Your job was revenge." I stopped. Looked at him. "Aldrich's dead. Wild Hunt's scattered. So what's your job now?"

He was quiet for a long moment. His jaw worked like he was chewing on words he didn't want to say.

"I don't know," he finally admitted. "Following you... it gave me purpose. Direction. Now..."

"Now you're free," I finished.

His eyes snapped to mine. "I don't want to be free. I want—" He stopped. Shook his head. "Fuck. I don't even know what I want."

I got it. God, did I get it.

"You could stay," I said. "Join Pinehollow. Not as my beta. Just... as pack."

Cole blinked. "You serious?"

"Do I look like I'm joking?"

Footsteps behind us. Kael approached, moving with that predator grace that still made my stomach flip.

"Cole." Kael's voice was formal. Alpha addressing a potential pack member. "You fought well today. Pinehollow would be honored to have a warrior like you."

Cole stared at him. Then at me. Then back at Kael.

"I..." His voice cracked. "I'd like that."

Something warm bloomed in my chest. Not the bond. Just... happiness. For my friend.

Cole dropped to one knee. The formal gesture looked weird on him—he'd always been casual with me. But this wasn't about me anymore.

"I pledge my loyalty to Pinehollow," he said. "To Alpha Kael Harrington and his mate."

Kael's hand landed on Cole's shoulder. "Rise, Cole. Welcome home."

When Cole stood, his eyes were wet. He looked at me. "Thank you, boss."

"Stop calling me that," I said. But I was smiling. "We're pack now. Just Lynette."

He grinned. "Yes, boss."

Asshole.

---

The Grey house smelled like home.

I stood on the porch, suddenly nervous. Which was stupid. I'd faced down Wild Hunt. Killed Aldrich. But walking through this door felt harder.

Maybe because this mattered more.

I knocked.

The door flew open. Ethan stood there, looking like he hadn't slept in days. His eyes went wide.

"Lynette!"

He pulled me into a crushing hug. I let him. Even hugged back.

"We felt the tremors," he said into my hair. "Saw the fires from town... holy shit, Lyn. We heard rumors."

"Language," Emily's voice called from inside.

Ethan pulled back. Grinned. "Come on. Everyone's here."

The living room was packed. Marcus and Emily on the couch. Ethan dragging me in. And—

"Lynette!" Elara bounced over, practically vibrating with excitement.

My little sister looked different. Lighter. Like some weight had lifted.

"Hey, El," I said.

"I got in!" She thrust a letter at me. Official looking. "The omega protection program. They accepted my application!"

I scanned the letter. It was real. Starting next month, Elara would be working with the Wolf Council to help other omega victims of abuse.

Pride swelled in my chest. "El, this is amazing."

"I know!" She was bouncing on her toes. "They said my experience would help others. That I could make a real difference."

I pulled her into a hug. "I'm so proud of you."

When I let go, I found Marcus and Emily watching me. Their expressions were complicated. Proud. Awed. Maybe a little scared.

"We're sorry," he said quietly. "For not seeing it sooner. For not protecting you better. You've been carrying this burden alone and we—"

"Stop." My voice came out rougher than I meant. "You gave me a home. A family. That's more than I ever had."

Emily was crying now. She stood, wrapped her arms around both me and Marcus.

"We love you," she whispered. "No matter what form you take. No matter how powerful you are. You're our daughter."

Something cracked in my chest. The wall I'd built around that soft, vulnerable part of me.

I let myself cry. Just a little. Just enough.

"I love you too," I said.

And meant it.

---

The meeting dissolved into celebration. Food. Drink. Music.

I slipped away. Needed air. Space.

Found myself on the eastern balcony. Overlooking the territory. The forest stretched out forever, dark and beautiful under the rising moon.

Footsteps behind me. I didn't need to turn around.

"Hey," Kael said softly.

"Hey yourself."

He came up beside me. Leaned against the railing. We stood in comfortable silence.

"Thinking about something?" he asked.

"Everything." I laughed. Shook my head. "A month ago I was hiding. Running. Alone. Now..."

"Now?"

"Now I have a pack. A family. A mate." I looked at him. "It's a lot."

"Too much?" His voice was careful. Worried.

"No." I reached for his hand. Laced our fingers together. "It's perfect. Terrifying. But perfect."

"I never thought I'd have this," I admitted. "I was so sure I'd die alone. That I didn't deserve anything else."

"You deserve everything," Kael said fiercely. "And I'm going to spend the rest of my life proving it to you."

My throat tightened. "That's a long time."

"Not long enough."

He pulled me close. I went willingly. Rested my head on his chest. Listened to his heartbeat.

The bond pulsed between us. Not just connection. Not just attraction.

Love.

Real. Deep. Unshakeable.

"Thank you," I whispered.

"For what?"

"For waiting. For believing in me. For not giving up when I was too scared to let you in."

His arms tightened. "Thank you for choosing me. For trusting me with all of you. The warrior. The queen. The girl who just wants to be loved."

I tilted my head back. Looked up at him.

God, he was beautiful. Inside and out.

"I love you," I said. Simple. True.

"I love you too." He kissed me. Soft. Sweet. "My mate. My queen. My Lynette."

We stood there as the moon rose higher. The pack celebrated below. The forest whispered around us.

"This is only the beginning, you know," Kael murmured against my hair.

"I know."

"There'll be challenges. Politics. Other packs testing us."

"Let them try."

He laughed. "That's my girl."

"Damn right."

I pulled back. Looked out over our territory. Our pack. Our future.

Whatever came next, we'd face it together.

The lone wolf was done running.

I was home.
