Chapter 51

Cassidy lay frozen without breathing, staring at the ceiling where she had seen the door swing open and then close. She strained her senses. Listening for the slightest sound. Taking in long slow breaths trying to catch a scent of anyone that would have come into the room. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she worked up the courage to get up to catch whoever it was sneaking around in her room. “One… Two…” she mouthed silently to herself and on the count of three she jumped upright in the bed, ready to attack or be attacked.

Except when she rose up, there was nothing there and the bedroom looked as it had, completely undisturbed and empty but for the two of them. The she-wolf was prepared to attack the intruder and looked confused for a split second before she was swiftly yanked down in the bed and covered with her mates body.

James had been dead asleep. No dreams. No lust. No aches from his three days of intense work out with Cassidy. Just the sweet silence of the black abyss. He was unaware of any kind of threat and with the door opening and closing without a sound, not even that would have alerted him to any form of disturbance. So when Cassidy shot up onto her knees in the bed, looking like she was going to fight someone when his eyes opened up at her, he did the very first natural thing without even thinking about it. Protect his mate.

Grabbing Cassidy by the hips, he pulled her down into the bed and rolled over top of her, straddling himself across her body as he breathed hard and took a slow look around the room only for his brows to draw together in confusion. “What is the meaning of this?” He asked as a scowl formed on his mouth. He leaned over her, both hands on either side of her head to box her in while staring down, expecting an answer when she didn't answer right away.

The she-wolf became completely distracted when James straddled over her body to protect her, looking down her body where the Alpha’s manhood lay across her skin. She flushed. Three days of insatiable sex with the man and just looking at him naked had her and her wolf a mixture of shyness and wanting to eat him for main course and desert.

“CASSIDY” James growled to get her attention, a little more than grumpy for being woken up for nothing like that.

Cass looked up at James, wide eyed as if she had been caught red handed about to do something she shouldn't be doing. “What?”

When she asked what, James raised a brow at her. “I asked you what was going on.” He repeated in a softer tone. He wasn't naive. He knew very well what was distracting his younger mate and it took everything he had to keep from grinning like the fox that caught the hare.

“I woke up and rolled towards you. When I rolled towards you, I seen the top of the door frame open and then close again just over your shoulder. I swear I did. But I heard and scented nothing out of the ordinary. When I leapt up to fight whoever thought it was a good idea to come in here unannounced… there was no one there. ” She explained and frowned, hearing how silly it sounded when she spoke about it out loud. “Maybe I was still dreaming and just hadn't woken up as much as I thought.”

At the mention of her dreaming, James’ face softened, knowing how hard it was for her to cope with the nightmares that plagued her. “I'm sorry Cassi. I didn't know you were having the nightmares again. I didn't hear anything.” He told her before he slowly moved off of her body, but leaned down to kiss her. Only to be stopped by her hand on his chest, holding him at bay.

“I didn't dream the same. The dream! James.. I need to tell you about it. But first…” she said and dropped her voice to a low whisper, looking over towards the door. “We need to figure out if someone came visiting. I don't like the idea of someone being in my room like that.” She told the alpha and looked up when he cupped her cheeks and leaned down to kiss her anyways.

“A good morning kiss first.” He whispered with a smirk before becoming resigned to figuring out what happened. “Why don't you get dressed and go get some breakfast.” He instructed her looking at the windows and the early golden light of the morning that was illuminating behind the closed blinds. “If I don't find anything then maybe we can go for a run and you can talk to me about the dream then?” he offered while he got off the bed and slowly stretched with a groan.

“Sure…” she said with a rumble of her hungry stomach as if it approved of the plan as well. She laughed softly and followed him out of the bed. “I guess the decision has been made up for me.” She said and rolled her eyes before she headed to her closet, finding a pretty golden colored yellow dress that almost matched her honey eyes. Something she would be able to get in and out of easily for their run later on. She went barefoot and came out of the closet, mid stroke of a brush through her dark chestnut hair when she stopped, looking at the massive black furred wolf that was now nose to the floor, trying to pick up any out of the ordinary scent he could find.

She admired him for a few minutes, brushing her hair out and then tossing the brush on the bed before she walked over to James and ran her fingers through his wolfs thick black fur. “You are handsome.” She praised the beast, knowing how vain their counterparts could be. Smiling when James leaned into her a little, she gave him an affectionate pat and opened the door for him to keep tracking if he needed to. “Ill get you something too.” Cassidy told him before making her way down to the kitchen.

James followed Cassidy out of the room and watched her go down the hallway until she disappeared down the stairs. He letting a sigh out and looking back down at the floor. There was nothing. Absolutely nothing that did not smell out of the ordinary. He had alerted his Beta and Gamma before he fell asleep it was finally safe for everyone to return back to the pack house. And the only fresh scents in the hallway was the omegas that cleaned the place. He believed his mate when she said she seen something. The look in her eye confirmed she believed it herself. It was just confusing he couldn't track anything inside or outside of the room.

He shifted back to his human form and moaned a little from the lingering ache of his body. ►Alaric, Jaxson? I need you to pull the security footage and find out who or what came into Cassidy’s room within the last hour.◄ he said to his men.

►No problem Alpha.◄ Jaxson said quickly, it taking Alaric a few minutes to respond.

►Sure thing James… Can we finally call you a man now?◄ Alaric asked in a smart ass tone.

James grinned at his best friends taunting as he went into his own room and went to grab a change of clothes to get into. ►Still waiting on you two to become men. You will both die virgins.◄ he retorted, hearing laughter from them both before he closed down the link. At least with the security footage they will be able to see what was going on while they were sleeping.

The Alpha came downstairs in nothing but sweats, choosing to do the same as Cassidy did and find something easy to change in and out of for the run they had planned. He was excited to get out and shift and run, let all the tension from the last few days out of their wolves and stretch their legs. She needed to run more, it would help with her aggression. At least he thought it would help. James was expecting a quick breakfast with just him and Cassidy in the kitchen and getting out before the house became busy. Except what he walked into was controlled chaos with the cooks whipping up a massive breakfast for what looked like the entire pack.

Cassidy was sitting on a wooden stool at the little island in the kitchen, elbows on the counter and an apple in both hands. She looked calm and serene as she ate small bites of the fruit, but James could tell she was seething and trying to control it. The cause of her frustration came rushing into the kitchen like a general on a mission, coming to a stop with hands on her hips, glaring at her eldest born son.

“James Julian Black. What in the gods name do you think you are doing letting our Luna out of bed so early? And why are you dressed in that?!” she asked, pointedly looking at his Grey baggy sweat pants. “At least the Luna has some sense of taste for todays breakfast. Go get changed.” She flat out demanded and everything in the room came to a halt when Cassidy spoke in reply.

“No.” She said in a chilled tone, the command in her tone made everyone flinch. “Alpha Black is going nowhere.” She said and twisted on the chair to stare down James’ mother, the former Luna.
