POV: Isla | Hospital room, then Estella's secured room
The hospital bed is in the shelter's medical wing, which is the room I built and which has the specific quality of a space built by its current occupant, the quality of a place that has been organized by someone who knows what it needs to contain and who made sure it contained those things, and which is slightly disorienting to be inside as a patient rather than as the person who built it, the perspective shift of a space you know from one side suddenly experienced from the other.
My arm is responding to treatment. This is the statement that the attending healer, who is one of Katherine's fae contacts and who has been doing this work longer than I have been alive, delivered this morning with the flat precision of someone who is not going to perform relief because the outcome is still conditional and she is not in the business of performing emotions she has not yet earned.
Responding to treatment means the silver residue is being cleared, which means the infection that the silver was feeding is losing its support structure, which means the arm is not being lost, which is the version of this story that the timeline still permits if I remain in the bed and allow the treatment to continue and do not get up, which I have been managing by understanding that the children need me functional for years rather than for the next forty-eight hours, and the functional version of me requires the arm.
Estella comes to my room on the second day.
She comes in the way she comes into all spaces, which is carefully, the specific carefulness of someone who has been taught by experience that spaces contain unpredictable things and who assesses each one before committing to it, and she stands in the doorway of the medical room looking at me in the bed with the expression that I have been learning to read over the weeks since the facility, which has a specific quality tonight that is different from its ordinary quality.
The ordinary quality is wariness and assessment and the gradual cautious movement toward something that might be safe. Tonight's quality has guilt in it, the specific quality of a child who has done something and who knows it and who is standing in the consequence of it.
She is eight years old and she threw a caretaker against a wall and broke her arm and she has been in a secured room for four days and nobody has told her she is a monster because we do not say that and because it is not true and because the people around her understand what happened well enough to know what it was, which is trauma producing an uncontrolled response in a system that has never been given the tools to regulate itself, which is a medical event with a cause and a treatment rather than a judgment.
Nobody has told her that. She has told herself something else instead.
"I'm a monster," she says. She says it from the doorway, standing in the space where she has not yet committed to entering, and she says it with the specific flat certainty of a child who has decided something and who is not presenting it for debate. "I hurt someone. I could have killed her."
"You're traumatized," I say. "That's different."
"I lost control."
"Yes," I say. "You did. Because you were in a facility for three years and the things that should have helped you learn to manage what you are were used to take things from you instead, and your body doesn't have the tools yet, and that is not the same as being a monster." I look at her from the bed with the direct quality that I use when I need something to land rather than to be available to reinterpretation. "A monster doesn't come to the doorway feeling guilty. A monster doesn't care."
She stands in the doorway for a long time with this information, which she is doing the work of locating, the specific work of placing a new framework alongside the one that has been there.
"What if I can't control it?" she says.
I think about my own history, the specific version of it that is relevant here, which is not the medical career or the shelter or the hybrid children, but the earlier version, the version of Isla Reid who did not choose what happened to her and who spent years building a life that was organized around the specific daily work of managing what she had been made rather than what she had chosen to be, and the specific moment when she understood that the managing was not the whole of the life and that the life could be something larger than the management.
"Then I'll help you learn," I say. "That's what family does."
She comes into the room. She comes in all the way, which is the first time she has come all the way into a space without stopping partway, and she sits on the chair beside the bed with the specific quality of someone who has been offered something and who is deciding whether to take it, and I let her decide without filling the space with anything, because the silence is not empty and she knows how to sit in it.
After a while she says, in the voice she uses when she is asking the question that is under the question she has been asking: "Are you my mom now?"
I look at her. I look at the room I built and the arm that is responding to treatment and the children in the rooms adjacent and the incubator two rooms over with Lucia's heartbeat on the monitor, and I think about what I have been building for the past three years without fully naming what it was, which is this, which is all of it, which is exactly this room and exactly this child in the chair beside my bed.
"If you want me to be," I say. "Yes."
