Chapter 37: We're Not Werecats

Laura Just when I thought it couldn't get any harder avoiding Julian, he followed me to the door and stood in front of me. He stared at me, with those eyes that used to radiate pure hate. —But now they were different. I saw love, I saw kindness. I saw sadness. I saw things that were not supposed to be seen in Julian's eyes. My heart was starting to melt and this made me frustrated because I thought I had gotten over him but my heart still beat for him. I had to get away from him at all costs, before my wolf took over my emotions and I did something stupid... "What do you want?!" I wanted to sound stern but my voice failed me. A part of me wanted him to go away but another, wanted him to say all of those things he had in his eyes but he removed his hand from the door frame. The part of me that wanted him to speak to me, felt disappointed and this fueled my anger and I walked past him. "I'm sorry," he mumbled and my heart froze but my fingers had already pushed the door close. I stood there rooted to the spot, unable to believe what I just heard. My ears weren't playing tricks to me, I had heard it loud and clear. I leaned against the door, hoping to hear more but all I got, were his footsteps receding down the corridor. Once again, I was disappointed. Slowly I turned away and sat on the bed. All I wanted to cry. But as soon as the thoughts came to my mind, I remembered everything Julian did to my father and I. He didn't love me. He loved hurting me. I looked up at the ceilings and choked back my tears. —I would never cry for a man like him. My ears had played tricks, I reached that conclusion. It was nothing, probably a hallucination because it was something I wanted to hear from him in a long time. Julian could never apologize. My phone blared creating the perfect distraction for me. As my fingers reached for it; my eyes lit up as soon as I saw who it was. "Yes Mack?" "Yo! You're home?" She asked and I could already tell that she was coming. "Where else would I be?" I walked to the window and looked outside. The high castle walls prevented me from seeing the road. Unless I climbed to the last floor. "That's good. So I just saw Blade a while ago, he didn't look too good. He was sort of in a hurry— I thought something had happened to you again." I frowned, taking my eyes off the road "No, I'm fine. Did you— did you talk to him?" I stuttered. I felt a knot of worry develop in my stomach. "No! I just said—" Her horn blared through the phone— "Fucking hell! Let me pull up, gimme a minute." She put her phone on hold and I bit down on my bottom lip, thinking about the chances that Blade could have told her the truth or maybe not... But then again, what if something happened to Blade? Maybe his other patients? I felt more worried about Blade. Maybe, I should talk to him. Cheer him up. After all, doctors saw a lot of shits in the hospital. They literally see people die, and have to save lives with their own skills. "Yo! You there?" Mack came back and my thoughts returned to her carelessness. "Mack, were you calling while driving?" "Erh, yeah?" I hissed. "Mack, that's dangerous. We are not werecats. We don't have nine lives. We are werewolves. We might be strong but we die like any other creature. You need to stop playing with your life!" Mack scoffed. "Tch, that's just a myth. Werecats don't exist—" "This conversation has nothing to do with Werecats and you know it!" I hissed, then my thoughts reshuffled. "Mack?" "Yeah?" "Can you please come and pick me up? I want to see Blade." "Why do you think I'm calling you?" She sang and I smiled; I guessed right. "Let's meet up, I'm almost at the castle," she said. "I will be waiting outside the gates." "Alright, meet you there in five!" I ended the call and changed into jean trousers, a shirt and a black cardigan. Then I stepped out. But as soon as I got to the corridor, I heard the baby cry. I felt nostalgic and every part of me wanted me to go to the baby. I wanted to hold him, comfort him but I knew seeing Sarah would only bring trouble. With a heavy heart, I turned away from the sound and focused on my original destination. In just a few minutes, I met with Mack outside the gates. The guards already knew our routine so they rarely stopped me from going out again. "Aren't you dressed heavily?" Mack eyed me as I entered the front seat. "Aren't you dressed too lightly?" I eyed her crop top and track trousers. "I was doing yoga. I didn't have time to change," she mumbled. "So, how do we find Blade?" She turned to me and I smiled. "So, do you know where he lives?" Mack looked at me as if I had said the most random thing. "How the hell am I supposed to know that? You don't have it either, do you?" I shrugged my shoulder in response. Mack shook her head. "Alright, we will track him. I don't like using this method, but I do it when I'm chasing a few exes." I ignored the part about exes and just stared at her. She clicked the Find Your Lover App on her phone and I entered his number. After a few seconds, his name popped on the map. Mack raised her brows. "Two miles up orange road? That's not far from here, but there's a problem." The carefree aura she had on was instantly gone. "What?" Mack frowned. "That's a place frequented by criminals. It's more like what we call The Hoods." I swallowed. "He isn't involved in any sketchy deals right?" I felt very nervous. "I guess, we'll find out when we get there." Mack drove us to the place, North of town. I've heard of it once before, but I never saw it. When we got there, I realized that it was worse than I thought, it was brimming with sketchy looking people. —Criminal was an understatement in naming them. Mack parked the car in a corner and enabled the digital security lock, just in case someone decided to steal our car while we were gone. A large warehouse loomed before us. Blade was inside there. Mack threw a coat over her body to protect herself from advancing and she held me close to her. I was really nervous about it, but I couldn't go back now. —Not when we were so close to Blade. At the entrance, there was a gathering of men. You could say they were watching over it. "Don't show fear Laura. Just stay close to me," Mack said. I walked beside Mack, avoiding eye contact with the men. "Whoa!" "Where are you going?" The nastiest of the bunch jumped into our path. He had a mean looking scar up his face. "You look all posh and pine, you don't belong here." "Yeah, tell her dawg!" His men cheered him up. "You are one of them new hooker girls? You look too clean." He sniffed and licked his lips disgustingly. I shuddered at the sight. Mack held her hands into a fist. "Look homie, I don't want any—" "Laura?" I turned and Blade stood there at the entrance. His face was flushed, and the shock on his face was hard to forget when he saw us. "Blade!" I walked up to him. "What happened? Mack said you looked worried today, you still do!" I noticed the way the men shushed up and slowly gave us space when they saw him. Mack stayed close to me and glared at them. Blade smiled, but it wasn't sitting well on his face. He wasn't calm and relaxed. "Laura—you can't come out here, it's dangerous." "Then why are you here?" Mack questioned. Blade raised his brows. "Oh yeah, I—I have a patient I'm treating. It's really bad, but they are stable now. Laura, Mack, you shouldn't have come here." He glared at the men and they looked away, keeping quiet. "Come, let me show you the way." He ushered us away. "Don't worry, I'm fine now. Thank God you came early." "That's the thing. What if I wasn't here? Who knows what would have happened? They don't know you, Mack you shouldn't be doing that. She doesn't know these things." He sounded very upset. I held my forearm. "I'm sorry, I should have just called." I apologized. It must have been quite the trouble to come all the way here for a patient. "It's alright. It does me good to know you care about me." He smiled sincerely for the first time and held my hand. Mack gave us space and walked behind us, I could feel her smirking at my back. "So, do you know these men?" I noticed as the men suddenly stopped what they were doing when we passed and nodded at him respectfully. "Yes, we do know ourselves," he sounded serious. "Do they know you are related to the King—" Blade muttered a silent shush and kept his eyes on the road. I felt silent because I felt it was top-secret. He walked us back to the car and looked around, making sure that no one was around. "Yay, my car is intact!" Mack exclaimed in relief. Blade ignored her. "They don't know it. And it's a secret, all these men—" he looked around. "All these men hate Julian and the rest of the people that live in the castle. They don't respect him, I just managed to have good terms with them because I'm a doctor." He explained. I nodded at him. Mack got into the car while Blade held the door open for me. "I will call you when you get back, don't worry about me." He kissed my hand as I sat inside. I smiled back at him and waved as Mack drove away. I watched him from the rearview mirror as he treated. The men all stood there and followed him back to the warehouse. I believed him, I knew he said the truth. But there was a strange feeling developing within me.
