Chapter Ninety-Five
Delanie POV
“I knew she was pregnant,” Ainsley said, giving Annika her bottle.
“I’m surprised it's Oscar’s baby I mean Reign is ruthless.”
Ainsley nodded. She went blank for a moment I believed she went back to the days we spent in the slave mansion. I didn’t last long there thanks to Ajax but it was Ainsley’s home. I tried not to think about that time or the days before that in Blaze’s Pack but sometimes the memories crept back into my mind then I looked at my daughter and my mate and realised how far I’d come.
Ainsley snapped out of it. “Sucks to be her. Are you going to confront her? I know you’re dying to do it.”
“I’m not going to confront her about being pregnant. I want to know why she lied about Rebecca’s pregnancy. Ajax confirmed Rebecca really was pregnant.”
“You need to take her by surprise so she doesn’t have enough time to come up with a wild story.”
“You’re right,” I mumbled, nibbling on my nails.
“You can go. I’ll watch Annika.”
“Oh, I can’t do that. There’s an evil goddess after her.”
“Hmm, I’ll call Ross then and he’ll protect us,” she beamed confidently.
I smiled, and then something crossed my mind. “You know I find it weird why she didn’t just take Annika the first night she was there or the second time. Why did she wait so long? She had so many chances.”
Ainsley lifted a shoulder. “You may be onto something. Maybe she can’t until the full moon or maybe there has to be a ritual before she can take her. Ugh, gave me chills.”
“I know what you mean. Maybe this goddess isn’t as powerful as she wants us to believe. Don’t call Ross, I’ll call my Dad instead. He seems pretty knowledgeable about these things.”
He knew the goddess posing as Alexandra was an imposter on the first day.
I gave Dad a call and he jumped at the opportunity to spend time with Annika. I had questions for him too but I needed to do with while I had the chance. When Dad arrived to be with Ainsley and Annika I drove the short trip to the clinic. Shaina’s car was parked out from. It hadn’t been the same since Betty left.
Shaina hadn’t hired anyone to replace her yet so there was no one to greet the patients when they came in. Luckily there was no one waiting to be tended to. I found Shaina in her office with her head in a document.
“Del, hey. Is everything okay?”
I smiled. “Of course it is. I thought I’d swing by. It’s been a while.”
“You know you’re always welcome here.” She flashed me a big smile.
Why would she try to incriminate the man I loved? Did Oscar ask her to do it? Was she so in love with a married man, she would put an innocent man in jail or worse?
“We should catch up, huh? It’s been a while.”
“Well, there’s nothing to catch up on. I’ve been busy. I’m actually swamped with work now.”
She avoided my gaze. It broke my heart how I thought we were true friends.
“I’ve been exhausted lately.”
I balled my hands into fists. “Yeah, you need to get some rest. Take my advice I know what it’s like to be pregnant.”
Her head snapped up. “What?”
“I know about the baby, Shaina. I know about Rebecca’s pregnancy too.”
“You’re obsessed with her! Is it because you think your mate was fucking her? Confront him about it.”
“Shut up! Ajax never did that but you did falsify legal documents. You could lose your licence over this.”
Shaina bit her bottom lip. Her eyes darted to every corner of the room.
“I-I uh…”
“Did Oscar ask you to do it? Believe me, he’s not worth it. He’s nothing but a man whore.”
“Don’t say that!” Shaina shot to her feet.
My eyes went wide and I slid down my seat.
“He’s sweet and kind. No one understands him like I do. Reign doesn’t love him. I showed him real love. We’re having a baby.”
I chewed the inside of my cheek. Ajax told me Dimitri thought Rebecca was carrying Oscar’s child too.
“He swore he’d find a way for us to be together,” she said softly.
I wrinkled my nose. “As his slave? You have a medical degree what are you thinking?”
“The degree won’t hold me back at night.”
I ran a hand down my face. “You did it for him didn’t you?”
She scowled at me. “Like you wouldn’t do anything to protect Ajax. That bitch wouldn’t leave Oscar alone. She wanted to blackmail him with a baby after she took money from Ajax. She got greedy. So I confronted her.”
I swallowed the lump in my throat. “Shaina you didn’t.”
That’s why they never found wolf scent on Rebecca or venom.
Shaina focused on me. “What?”
“You killed her, didn’t you? You’re a doctor you know how all this shit works. You made sure nothing would be brought back to you and you thought Ajax was the best candidate.”
I stood quickly. Maybe coming here wasn’t the best idea.
“Where are you going?” she asked.
“I’m going to get my ass out of here. I have no idea who you are!”
“Delanie don’t!”
She lunged for me. She grabbed my arm and dragged me away from the door.
“I didn’t mean to kill her,” she screeched.
“What?” I battled to pry her grip off my arm.
How could I fight her but not fight her at the same time because she was pregnant?
“We got into an argument. I just wanted peace for Oscar. He was so depressed about the blackmail. He didn’t want a baby with her.”
“Ugh, why did he sleep with her? Don’t be delusional, Shaina.”
Shaina was a wolf but I was curious to know how she overpowered Rebecca and killed and then dragged her body to the middle of nowhere. She had an accomplice. She twisted my arm and slammed my body against the wall. Okay, I got the picture, Shaina was really strong.
“I’d be nicer to me because when my son’s born, the heir to the Pack, that will make me Luna Consort.”
“Over Reign’s dead body,” I muttered.
“It’s the law. She’ll have to deal with it.”
“Let me go. I don’t want to hurt you,” I said, wiggling against her tight grip.
She laughed. “I’m the she-wolf here.”
“Yes, but I’ve got powers too.” I willed the sleeping power in my gut to wake and sprout ice around Shaina’s ankles.
She gasped and instantly released me.
I jumped to the other side of the room. She used her wolf strength to free her legs. That was easy, I thought. That was the easiest spell I could think of that wouldn’t put her baby at risk.
“You’re pregnant, Shaina,” I said.
“And you’re a liability.”
I puffed and rattled my brain for a sleeping spell. I didn’t have any. Shaina darted across the room and punched me in the jaw. I flew and hit the window. I picked myself up in time for her next attack. Before Shaina tore me into pieces I summoned my magic again and commanded all the papers in the room to form a tornado. It wasn’t lethal but it was annoying and distracting.
“Ugh!” she yelled.
I ducked passed her as she fought with her paperwork. I opened the door, hoping for a clean getaway but was faced with another nightmare.
Alexandra stood on the other side of the door with a menacing smirk on her face, her clothes tattered and filthy.
The storm of papers died instantly.
