Chapter Eighty-Seven

Delanie POV

“Uh, babe why don’t you talk to your friend while I speak to Reign?” Ajax asked.

I nodded. I needed to speak to Shania anyway.

Ajax and Reign walked off together but we could still hear Reign raging.

“I was just heading out,” Shaina said.

“Is Oscar okay?”

She nodded. “He’s great. He’s making great progress.”

“So you think he’ll walk again?”

“Well, I don’t know about that.”

“What happened Shania? Why did you fire Betty?”

She frowned deeply. “Oh, you’ve heard.”

“Of course I did. What happened?”

Shaina shook her head and brushed up her smile. “It’s nothing really.”

“Oh, so it’s not about Rebecca’s pregnancy.”

She chuckled. “There was no baby.”

“Betty told me was but you didn’t include it in the report. Why not?”

Shaina shifted her case from her right to her left hand. “Del, you just had a daughter maybe you should focus on her and not imaginary children.”

“Annika is fine.”

“I’m glad so let’s leave Rebecca alone. Poor thing went through enough.”

This makes no sense one of them has to be lying. I pressed my lips together and took her in. Something about her seemed off like she wasn’t the friend I knew when I first got here. I believe Betty besides Shaina fired her which was suspicious.

“If she was pregnant, hypothetically then the Father of the baby might be the killer, right?”

“You mean Ajax?”

My heart slammed forward. “What?”

“Are you trying to say Ajax could be the killer and the Father of Rebecca’s supposed baby?”

She dipped her head to the side and her smile vanished.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You could be worried about that though,” she said, her voice slightly venomous. “It makes sense. You just want to be sure.”

“Ajax did not sleep with Rebecca.”

“How do you know? If she was pregnant I’m sure you’d want to know if Ajax was the Father or not. You’d be a lot more interested then.”

“Ajax didn’t kill her or sleep with her.”

“Del, Ajax is an Alpha it’s in their nature to fuck anything that moves. Besides, he wouldn’t tell you if he got someone pregnant.”

“That’s because he wouldn’t do it period,” I said, my temper rising.

“Did he tell you he gave Rebecca a million dollars? That could have been for upkeep for his heir.”

I can’t believe Ajax did that. That’s a lot of money! I didn’t let Shania see how her revelation affected me. I couldn’t just to conclusions until I spoke to Ajax. So many questions swirled in my head. So who had the money now?

“How did you know that?” I asked.

She straightened her spine and raked a hand through her hair. “I’ve been working closely with the team. I know a few details. Your fiancé didn’t tell you what he did I see.”

“It might not be true, Shaina. You know Ajax has enemies.”

“I also know he’s a ruthless Alpha. Killing a fling isn’t beyond him. It’s late now Del. I’ve got to go.”

“Yeah, me too. Goodnight.”

She smiled and walked off.

Minutes later Ajax walked out of the house. I frowned.

“What?” he asked.

“Seriously?”

“What did he tell you?” he placed his hand on my back and led me to the car.

“A million dollars?”

Ajax paused. “Shit.”

“You did it!” I gasped. “Ajax how could you?”

I stormed off and climbed into the car.

“Del, wait!”

I slammed the door shut. That’s a ridiculous amount of money and he did it without telling me. What reasons would he have to just give it to her?!

Ajax climbed into the car and turned to me. He kept his hands to himself. It was good he didn’t try to touch me because I didn’t want him to at that moment.

“I did it to get her off our backs. She wanted money so I gave it to her. It’s no big deal.”

I glared at him. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you were heavily pregnant and tired. I didn’t want to stress you.”

He reached for my hand. I tried to pull away but he held me tightly.

“I did it to protect our family. I’ll do a lot worse and you know it.”

I believed him.

“It doesn’t look good for you.”

“I’m innocent. Everyone knows it. The real killer’s out there.”

“Who do you think it is?”

Ajax started the car. “Who knows? I’m concerned about the mess my brother’s put us in.”

“Is it bad?” I asked.

“Potentially but we’ll know after we speak to them tomorrow.”

“What’s Oscar saying?”

Ajax puffed. “Nothing. I don’t want to hear it anyway. Was your friend the one who told you about the money?”

I nodded. “She said she’s working closely with the team.”

Ajax glanced at me. “No, she’s not. She gave us a report that’s it.”

“What?” I gasped. “Why would she lie?”

Ajax shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“She’s acting weird, Betty was right. I can’t trust what she says now.”

“This might not be related but she’s screwing Oscar too. Unless you already knew that and didn’t want to tell me your friend’s dirty laundry.”

I gasped and Ajax slammed on the brakes.

“What Delanie?”

“She’s sleeping with Oscar?!”

Ajax groaned and eased on the brakes. “So she kept it a secret.”

“Is she crazy? Doesn’t she know what Reign is capable of?”

“That’s what I thought. We’ll talk about this later princess. All I want is to fuck you tonight.”

Heat rushed to my cheeks. “Ajax…”

He planted his palm on my thigh and massaged it. “I want more.”

“I’m not going to argue with you on that,” I blushed.

We had to go home the next day even though the bizarre thing in Annika’s room was still there. Ajax had found an expert who was supposed to deal with it. The hotel was nice but I missed the comfort of our home. Ajax said it wasn’t supposed to take long and I hoped so.

“This whole ordeal is crazy,” Alexandra said as we unloaded our things from the truck.

“Yeah, but it will be over soon,” Ajax responded.

“Sorry, I’m sure this isn’t what you thought your days of freedom would look like,” I said.

We still hadn’t bonded much since she got here. We bonded over Annika which was precious but I wanted to know her on a personal level. I read her letters but I wanted to know her story and I wanted her to know mine. Our stories had elements of pain but I hoped we both had our second chances.

“Oh honey, I didn’t think about freedom at all. This is beyond my wildest dreams. I totally forgot what the sun felt like,” she said with a sad smile.

“Then we should arrange a trip to the beach. I’ve never been there.”

“Really? It’s wonderful. I went to the beach when I ran away from your Grandmother. It’ll be wonderful to be there with you and my granddaughter.”

I smiled. A car door slammed, grabbing our attention.

Alexandra stumbled backwards, her lips parted and her eyes turned to saucers. I followed her gaze and noticed my Dad, Harvey walk up to us. He stopped and scrutinised Alexandra. This was the first time he’d seen her since they were separated.

“Uh… Harvey, how’s it going?” I asked, hoping to lighten the mood.

Ajax busied himself with removing the luggage.

“Could be better,” he said, his eyes narrowing.

“Something wrong?” I asked.

“I-I should go,” Alexandra said quickly.

“Are you okay?”

She shook her head violently and turned around. “I can’t be near that man.”

Harvey hadn’t flinched. He remained staring at her as she fled.

Ajax paused and watched us quizzically.

“What’s going on?” I turned to Harvey.

I knew she wasn’t ready to see him but I didn’t expect this reaction. She reacted as if he was a monster.

Harvey pointed at the door Alexandra just escaped through.

“You have to get rid of that woman immediately.”
