Chapter Eighty-Three
Delanie POV
“How is she?” Ainsley whispered.
“You don’t have to whisper she’s asleep,” I replied.
She was talking about Alexandra. We put her up in the guest room. She was overwhelmed by all the change the world had gone through since she last saw it. She had a lot of questions but she was also tired.
Harvey stayed out of the way when we brought her home. He thought she wasn’t ready to see him especially if she thought he was dead all these years too. He said he would visit when she had rested and when we caught up.
I dreaded the conversation, the emotions and the tears. I knew her story but hearing it from her, in her own words would be overwhelming.
“Sorry. Your Dad was great with Annika. It’s like she’s known him for ages,” Ainsley said.
I smiled. I was thankful for Annika. I didn’t know how much I needed her until I had her.
Speaking of my daughter she was in her Dad’s arms as usual. He walked by carrying her with one arm as he walked to the kitchen to grab something to drink. The whole world would know if I tried to separate them.
“When are you going back to the hospital?” Ainsley asked.
“I’m not sure. Annika’s still so small. I do have to stop by and grab some vitamins.”
“I’ll go with you. I haven’t seen the girls in ages!”
“I’ll grab my purse,” I said.
I got up to get my purse but I stopped by the guest room to see Alexandra. She was sound asleep and that put me at ease.
“I’ll be right back,” I told Ajax.
I kissed his cheek but he wasn’t satisfied he pulled me back and kissed my lips.
“Hurry back,” he said.
I knew what he wanted and it made me warm inside. Ainsley and I left quickly so I could hurry back to my mate. However, I needed some time with my friends. During the last months of my pregnancy, I’d been so tired I couldn’t do much.
We got to the hospital and it was quiet as usual. They had received funding from the Alpha which was going to good use. They refurnished some rooms and were adding more facilities.
“Hey, Strangers!” Betty greeted us.
She was behind the front desk. I missed the clean medicinal scent of this place.
“But where’s the baby? She’s the most important person.” Betty squeezed me.
“You can’t pry her away from her Daddy,” I said.
Ainsley's phone rang and she sighed. “Ross can be so clingy,” she said.
She walked out the front door.
“Speaking of her Daddy, how’s the case going? The report was sent yesterday. Poor woman.” Betty shook her head.
“I didn’t know the report was sent. Ajax hasn’t been called about anything all I know is they found the murder weapon and it was a knife and not the claw marks a wolf would use.”
“I don’t think Ajax did it… but she was pregnant it could have been the father of her baby.”
“Pregnant?” My jaw dropped.
Betty nodded. “Rebecca was pregnant though, Shaina didn’t say how far along she was I’m sure she included it in the report.”
“Where is Shaina?” I asked.
“She’s not here. She said she had an errand to run.”
“Geez, that’s horrible. Is it possible to determine who the Father of the baby was?”
Betty nodded. “It might give us a clue as to who killed her.”
What if Derek was the Father of the baby and killed Rebecca because he didn’t want it? Derek’s a wolf too but he could have used a knife to distance himself from the murder further. I had to talk to Ajax.
Betty gave me the vitamins I needed. Ainsley needed to go home because Ross missed her. I missed my mate too although I wanted to curl into his lap and get lost in his arms he needed to know this vital bit of information if he didn’t know already.
“Ajax?” I called.
“In the kitchen. Feel like steak tonight?”
He’s cooking? I thought, how sweet. I found him fixing up six tender steaks, we didn’t need all that but Ajax had a massive appetite.
“Did you know Rebecca’s medical report is out?” I asked.
“Yeah,” he said, focused on his meat.
“So you know she was pregnant.”
Ajax paused. “No, she wasn’t.”
“What? Betty told me she was.”
Ajax raised his brow at me. “Delanie, the report didn’t say anything about Rebecca being pregnant. She was wrong.”
I planted my hand on my hip. Betty worked at the hospital and worked closely with Shaina I trusted her.
“Betty said Shaina hadn’t mentioned how far long the pregnancy was too. They can figure out who the baby’s Father is, what if it’s Derek?”
“Something’s not right Delanie because that report didn’t say anything about pregnancy. Maybe you should talk to Shaina.”
I planned to do that but Annika bellowed in her room.
“I just put her down,” Ajax sighed heavily.
“I’ll check on her.”
I hurried to her room. She sounded agitated so I assumed she needed a clean diaper.
“Mommy’s here…”
I paused at the door and stared up at the wall.
“What the hell?”
Annika’s angry cry clawed at my senses, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the corner of the nursery.
“Ajax!” I screamed.
