Chapter 73: Chapter Seventy-Two

Delanie

I shook my head and practically flew to the other side of the kitchen.

“No, you can’t.”

He followed me and wrapped me in his arms again. I felt claustrophobic couldn’t he see that? I wanted to scream or faint. I was suddenly light headed.

“That’s not right. We’ve been together all day. How are you smelling it now?”

“I told you these little buggers show their scent when they want to. This one couldn’t wait to let us know he’s here.”

Tears glossed my eyes and lumps clogged my throat.

“No, no. This can’t be. I can’t be pregnant. Not now. Not now,” I sobbed.

Ajax stiffened. He didn’t know what to do he just watched me cry.

“Delanie, what’s wrong?” Shaina asked.

I looked at her with teary eyes. “Ajax thinks I’m pregnant. He can smell it.”

Shaina’s face fell. “You can’t be sure that way. You need to go for a medical examination.”

“I’m very confident in my ability. I smell my baby in her right now. I can barely smell Delanie’s natural scent because she’s carrying a pup.” Ajax protested.

Shaina rolled her eyes. “I hear these false pregnancies from male wolves claiming their wives are pregnant all the time. You need a pregnancy test. Two at least to combat a false positive or false negative.”

I rubbed my eyes. “Good then let’s go buy another one. I have one already.”

Ajax planted a hand firmly on my shoulder. “You’re not going anywhere. You’re too delicate to go anywhere. You need to rest. Everyone’s going home now.”

My eyes went wide.

“There’s no time to protest, Delanie. I won’t it anyway.” He pulled me close and kissed my forehead.

Ajax didn’t understand. I want his baby. I want more than one but I’m not sure this one is his and being in limbo about it was more terrifying than knowing whose it was.

“Shaina he doesn’t get it. I’m not sure who’s baby this is.”

“Relax. While he’s kicking everyone out let’s run and buy a test. It’s two minutes and we’ll have the results.”

I could have snuck into my room to grab the pregnancy test I bought but never used but we didn’t have the time. Ajax was already kicking everyone out. Shaina and I ran out the door, ran across the street to where she parked her car and drove off to the nearest pharmacy.

***

The pharmacies closed late in Mystic Pack. Shaina didn’t have two-minute pregnancy tests at the clinic because they were in high demand apparently so we had to continue our search for a pharmacy.

“I don’t think you have much to worry about. The way I see it you could have conceived before you were kidnapped,” Shaina said optimistically.

“Max took me to the hospital. I had all the tests done. Wouldn’t the doctor have said anything?”

I thought about Doctor Wynter. He tried to help me but he paid the price for it.

“False negatives happen all the time… We won’t know until we have a date of conception. I want you at the hospital first thing tomorrow morning. If you are pregnant there’s a lot to do. I hope those idiot doctors didn’t force feed you anything.”

I shook my head. “They injected me with a bunch of stuff but I don’t know what.”

“Ugh, I hate them.”

Shaina drove into an old gas station. We were almost out of town at this point. The gas station had a twenty-four-hour pharmacy and a little fast food joint. The sudden craving for a burger was so strong I could kill for it. I shook the feeling away because it startled me.

We scanned the rows for the right pregnancy test. Thank goddess I had Shaina because I didn’t know what to choose!

“Here! These are almost always right.”

We grabbed two and darted into the fast food place bathroom. Never in a million years did I think I’d take a pregnancy test in a fast food place bathroom. I was terrified as I peed on the little stick but a part of me held hope and a fantasy that this was Ajax’s baby. I saw how overprotective he got. He changed in an instant and that made me smile like an idiot.

“I’m losing it. How long’s it been?” Shaina asked.

I couldn’t even look at the stick. How could two minutes feel like two hours?

I gasped when the lines appeared. The first one was positive. Two minutes later the second one was positive two.

I came out of the bathroom stall stunned.

“I don’t know if I should say congratulations or not,” Shaina cringed.

“The little one’s innocent no matter who his Father is. If it is Max’s I know he’ll come after the baby.”

“You’re not alone, Del. We won’t let that happen.”

I gave her a watery smile. I should call Ajax but I should get that burger before I hurt someone.

We walked into the restaurant but I pulled Shaina back into the restroom quickly.

“What’s wrong?” She hissed.

“It’s Rebecca and Decker,” I whispered.

“Who? Why are we hiding?”

“Because Decker’s the one whose pack Ajax destroyed because he thought he killed Ajax’s chosen mate.”

“No way,” Shaina gasped.

“Rebecca’s the chosen mate’s sister. This feels suspicious.”

“Should we confront them?” Shaina hissed.

“No, but I wish I could hear what they were saying.”

Shaina smiled proudly before tucking a strand of hair over her shoulder.

“Good thing you have a wolf friend, huh? I can hear all the way there and further.”

I leaned close to her as if it would help me gain supernatural hearing powers too.

“He said Ajax won’t be easy to convince,” Shaina whispered. “She says not to worry. Oh, she’s pulling something out of her bag. I don’t like how it looks it looks like herbs. She probably saw a witch.”

I’ve had enough of witches for one lifetime.

“She’s going to feed it to him. So he forgets his mate’s scent. That’s your scent.”

“No way,” I gasped.

I thought she wanted money why does she want him to forget me?

“He says they’ll be in touch.”

Decker and Rebecca rose from the booth. I pulled Shaina all the way into the restroom so they wouldn’t see us.

“That girl is up to no good. You have to tell Ajax and have her kicked out.”

Which was exactly what I was going to do. My phone vibrated in my back pocket. I found several texts and missed calls. It was Ajax.

His last text was asking me to come out of the restaurant.
